Beware of bed bugs in furniture at this--and all--thrift stores 7/21/2012

We have always loved Diversity. It has lots of neat items. We feel, however, that we need to make others aware of a situation that happened to us recently. We were considering purchasing a new sofa, and were shopping around for one. We knew we'd probably end up buying a new one, but thought we'd price some of the nicer used ones, too. In Diversity's furniture section, there was a beautiful sofa that seemed new. It looked clean and bright, had no rips or stains and seemed like a good deal. Because we're very cautious when it comes to buying furniture (and to make sure there were no critters in the couch) we removed the seat cushions and pulled up on the handle to extend the sleeper feature. What we found was horrifying. Inside this sofa was a large population of bedbugs, all piled on top of each other. Some were alive, and there were lots of exoskeletons. They were deep down in the sofa, between the sofa frame and mattress. We informed the folks there, and they removed the sofa and swept the place where it had been with a household broom. There is no telling how many bugs fell out or crawled to other furniture. This should never have been accepted by Diversity. The person donating the sofa undoubtedly knew that the thing was infested, and donated it anyway. The sofa should have been fully inspected prior to being put on the floor with all the other items. This indicates that the furniture at Diversity is not fit for purchase. My advice: do NOT purchase used sofas, chairs, mattresses, bed frames, headboards/footboards, etc. Don't even sit on furniture in a store. Also, it's very, very difficult to get rid of bed bugs and costs anywhere from $1000 to $2500 to remove them from homes/apartments. Bombs from Home Depot don't work. Professional pyrethrins don't work, either. Be educated and protect yourself. more

Great place 8/17/2005

This is a very nice place to shop. IT is more of a thrift store than an antique store but they do have some antiques. The prices are not too bad for a thrift store but can be far from free. The do have a nice selection of trench coats though! They have many items from clothing to records they have it all. Diversity Thrift: 8/10 more
