If you're in the area traveling and looking for a sea food place, check them out. The staff is very good and the food is as well. more

Can't say anything besides Fantastic! 9/30/2009

Being in the industry I always find myself grading the places that I dine both the food and waitstaff. I took a friend from out of town after being recommended by a coworker and I was not disappointed. We started off with the baked crab cakes (recommended by our server) that were phenomenal, than I ordered a center cut filet that came with breaded shrimp while my friend got the chefs tasting menu. She did also choose to add the wine pairing for an additional $15 and it was definitely worth it. Often times scallops aren't prepared correctly and are very chewy, but the pan seared scallops that came with her meal were easily cut with a fork and melted in my mouth. Would definitely recommend this to anyone searching for quality seafood and will be back! Pros: Best scallops I've had in my life Cons: None! more

Great Food and eat with celebrities 4/8/2009

\r Last month I was in the lounge with some friends and in walks Paula Dean from the Food Network! I couldn't believe it! \r \r Then last night I was downstairs eating dinner and saw several members from the International Olymic Committee! It looked like they were enjoying their last dinner in Chicago. \r \r Me and my friends go to Devon's pretty regularly- the food is great and very consistent. \r \r They just changed their menu a bit. Highly recommend the Lobster Cobb Salad and Lobster Mac and Cheese. \r \r And if you have a sweet tooth- the Carrott Cake is always awesome. Pros: Great Food and Service Cons: Make a reservation- they are busy! more

Great atmosphere, Great Service, Food was wonderful 10/28/2008

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary here last weekend. It was a great place to go for a special dinner or just a regular dinner too. It was a very warm and comfortable environment. The service was great our waiter was very friendly and helpful. They had a great special on wine that night.(Sunday) $10 off/bottle. The crab cakes were absolutely delicious and my husband and I really enjoyed our Shrimp Enchiladas and Lobster Ravioli. Beautiful Presentation! We were too full for dessert, but looked great! We will definitely be back. Devon's is highly recommended! more

Great Wednesday and Thursday Specials 5/15/2008

I love devon seafood grill. They offer lobster at market price on Wednesday and Thursday - it is an unbeatable special. I come from Philadelphia were the origonal devon is and it is just as good in Chicago. It is a great place for a date or to take clients. The price are not super expensive, but you feel like you are at a top notch city spot. more

Great option for seafood in Chicago 5/10/2008

I was first skeptical because it's difficult to find excellent seafood in the midwest, rightfully so. But Devon did the job! Made reservations and was seated immediately. The bar area was very ""to be seen"" which is fine if that's what you like. The dining area is located downstairs in a very minimally decorated space with small nooks to the side. It had the right combination of loudness and privacy for both romantic dates and group dining. The service was good, not ""outstanding"" but nothing that would prevent me from coming back. I had a mango martini which pretty much tasted like cough syrup -- avoid it. For appetizer, we had the shrimp cocktail which is what shrimp cocktain should be like, LARGE and juicy. I also had a cup of lobster bisque which was wonderful. Not to creamy, just a perfect lobster flavor and a slight spice to it. For dinner, i had the hawaiin tuna steak which has a perfect char-grilled crust and wonderfully rare in the center, fresh. it came with a subtle hollandaise-like sauce and grilled vegetables. my date had the seafood sampler which had their well-known crabcake which I tasted and felt it was overseasoned a bit, but definitely jam packed with crab only. the plate also had large scallops and shrimp and a perfectly cooked piece of salmon. he also ordered a 1lb side of lobster which was the whole lobster for only $15 extra, personally i feel is a pretty good value. for dessert, we had the chocolate melting cake which is pretty standard, but there was a caramelized tart cup with ice cream in it which was perfect! I would definitely return. It's the best seafood i've had in chicago thus far -- I dine out in chicago 1-2 times a week at similar restaurants. make a reservation on weekends! Pros: Fresh fresh seafood, nice ambiance for both couples and groups, value Cons: bad martini more

Foodies steer clear of this place 3/1/2008

If you consider yourself a foodie, steer clear of this place. It had been recommended by several of my wifes associates....who we won't be taking restaurant advice from any longer. The staff was unprofessional -- after we waited for 20 minutes past when our reservation was for the maitre-de tried to seat us but the table wasn't cleared or made yet. The waitress was clueless about food -- my wife asked if the caesar dressing was more towards the parmesan side or mayonnaise side, they answerer parmesan and guess what, it was one of the worst caesar dressings we've tasted, way too much egg/mayo flavor, not enough parmesan. My wife got the crab cakes which tasted like they were filled with tartar sauce. The wine list was large but had a lot of very average bottles that were overpriced. We should have known we might be in trouble for the night when they handed us the vibrating beeper to be seated. Both my wife and I felt sick after the meal. We regularly dine out in Chicago, 2 - 3 nights a week, and this was the worst meal we've ever had that we paid more than $100 for. Foodies stay away.\r \r And one more thing I just noticed -- why does Citysearch give it Five Stars, when I just thoroughly looked through the reviews I saw a few with 1 and 2 stars (which I wish I'd read yesterday), how does this translate into Five Stars at the top? I didn't actually read all the reviews the first time as I read the first 2 glowing reviews and assumed all had given 5 stars, as the overall listing had given. Shady move Citysearch. more

CHICAGO'S BEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANT! 1/6/2008

I dined at Devon the other night was pleasantly surprised about this restaurant. It came highly recommended from friends who came in from out of town for a show. \r \r My wife and I dine out a few times a week and tend to critique restaurants harshly, but I found it difficult to find a point of concern here. The staff was quick to greet us and offered us the choice of sitting with a window view of the city or a downstairs private alcove. \r \r We chose the alcove and were amazed with the size of the downstairs facilities. The room is a football field in length and is well lit. The alcove was the most impressive however. Placed alongside the main dining room, it is a wonderfully romantic way to spend an evening. \r \r The service was constantly there, but never noticed. Our water was always filled, wine poured and accompaniments replaced as needed. The food was exactly as it was described and the Chef prepared my wife?s to order as her dietary needs required it. \r \r I had the Chilean Sea Bass with the Lobster Risotto and my wife had the Roasted Chicken. For wine, the restaurant has on staff an wine expert to go along with an impressive cellar of close to 500 bottles I learned. He came by and paired our meal perfectly. For desert we ordered an Orange Infused Molten Ghirardelli Chocolate Cake and it truly was divine. \r \r I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. Make a reservation and enjoy Chicago?s best Seafood Restaurant. more

Excellent food, terrible service 12/11/2007

The food was excellent, but the service was horrible. The greeter was friendly, but the hostess that seated us seemed miffed when we checked our coats when asked. The concierge assured us that we would have a nice table for our anniversary but were seated next to a post with a view of the kitchen. We waited for over 10 minutes for a drink order and another 10 or more for the drink. The waiter returned to check my menu to make sure that a single glass choice was there (it was). They were not very crowded. We were overcharged for the wine that I ordered. The chef, I assume, that served us was pleasant and informative. All dishes at our table were done perfectly. The wait for a second drink, the bill (slightly overcharged) and to take care of the bill were all unacceptable. The outstanding food and my easy grading policy are the reasons for the second star. Pros: Food, some of the staff. Cons: Service, service, service. more

Devon's -great service, food and ambiance for the fun professional 11/10/2007

I have eaten as Devon's many times since the new management took over in January 2007. Its been transformed into one of the best restaurants on the Gold Coast- apparently due the hard work of Kevin their new GM. \r \r Devon's is a fine dining restaurant w/ a friendly professional atmosphere. Its not for the fast food diner nor kids in general. We've seen corporate events hosted there in their ""wine room"". \r Often a manager or the GM stops by our table - the service is just outstanding. We have even seen some celebrities there. \r \r The seafood is consistently good and some of the best I have ever tasted. My favorites are the Tilapia (prefer the old Chambord sauce), the Lobster raviolis, and Roasted Chicken as an alternative. \r \r We heard the entire restaurant is being remodeled - especially the bar to add more seating and generate a ""warmer feel"". \r \r PS- The Happy Hour drinks and apps for $5 and lobster / crab legs are excellent. Pros: Service, food, ambience, valet Cons: Not for kids more

New Staff, Same Owners 9/21/2007

While the food was decent, the overall experience was below average. We tried to sit and enjoy a cocktail upstairs before dinner however, the music was way too loud. The bar was not warm and inviting at all. When we got downstairs for dinner, the staff was running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Everything seemed unorganized. Our dinner was the same way. The server did not seem to know what he was doing and the kitchen was a mess. I also heard disgruntled employees complaining to one another about management. I saw that the manager, Tiffany wrote that the restaurant is better now that there is new management and chef. It is very funny to me how she is throwing her co-workers under the bus. This restaurant has always been owned and operated by the Houlihans corporation. It doesn't matter that the management has changed. The culture is the same...and, all the ""new"" management staff has been trained by the same people that trained the old management staff . Devon needs to take responsibility for what happens in Devon, not blame the people that no longer work there. If this restaurant was great now, I could understand her comments. However, it is still the same mess it was when I dined there in March. If you want quality service and great seafood, go somewhere else!!! Pros: the crab cakes Cons: everything else more

Great for the whole Family 8/23/2007

Devon is a wonderful place for some of the best seafood I have ever had. While the editorial review states it's not a place for kids, we had a great experience with ours. Their children's menu includes smaller portions of classic seafood items, like grilled salmon and fried shrimp. And the price was very reasonable. Our kids are not your hot dog, mac & cheese or nothing kind, and it was nice to be able to have them get good seafood without splitting an adult entre.\r The service was terrific. Without a reservation, we got a table right away. We had theater tickets and our server timed everyting perfectly so we had a relaxing meal and still stayed on schedule. Whether it's business, romance or a dinner with the kids, Devon is a great choice. Pros: menu selection, service more

AWFUL SERVICE!!!!! 8/13/2007

I was a faithful customer to Devons until this weekend. My boyfriend and I were celebrating my new job and wanted to go to our favorite place. After the meal, he paid with his credit card. Another server named Matthew takes the folder. We get the folder back, but just with receipts in it. We get to the stairs to leave and my boyfriend realizes that he did not receive the card back. He goes back to the table to check and tells our server Dan. Dan begins to look, but to no avail. We are puzzled as to how in a mere 3 minutes you can take a card, swipe it, and then loose it. After 10 minutes of searching, the GM Kevin comes to the table in a less that pleasant mood. He tells my boyfriend to check his pockets and make sure that he did not misplace it, he checked again, and still no card. We wanted to know where the server that took the card was and why did he not come over an explain what he did with the card. Every other server came and said they were looking for it but Matthew. We explained this to the GM Kevin and he explains that he doesn't want Matthew yelled and cussed at. We just wanted to know what happened in that short time span. Kevin them proceeds to tell me that I have a bad attitude and he has already apologized seven times. After all of this, we still have no card, no explanation of what happenend to the card and after we asked, our meal was not comped, nor were we offered any sort of voucher. Just make sure if you go, you pay in cash. Pros: Food Cons: Service, GM more

Best seafood, best customer service...ever! 8/7/2007

I have never reviewed a restaurant before, but I just had to let everyone who was interested know of my wonderful experience with Devon. I brought a group here for work and we were not disapointed! The service we received before we even arrived was extraordinary. An event coordinator worked with me to ensure that we had the best visit...and we did! The food is the best seafood in town and the atmosphere is very nice. I admit to being very hard to please when it comes to food and customer service, but I was very much impressed by Devon and all it has to offer. Go here and you will not regret it! more

Always the best dining experience 7/8/2007

\r Weather it is just the two of us dining out for an evening or if we are entertaining local or International guests we have always enjoyed the best possible food and service at Devon Seafood Grill. Without question, the menu and wine selections offer just the right amount of variety and are certain to please even the most decimating pallet Pros: The menu and wine selections offer just the right amount of variety and are certain to please even the most decimating pallet more

Runaway Lobsters 7/5/2007

Devon is a great place with a great concept, if they can carry out as promised. $5 menu for happy hour 4-7 and then from 9-midnight. The menu includes hamburgers (massive!), great mussels, calamari, bruschetta with goat cheese, etc. It's good food for a great price everyday. However, everytime we come here, we want to get the $10 or $12 (depending on the day) lobster special. By 5:30 they have already run out. And if you think you missed out on the lobster, and want to get the crab legs instead, DON'T. Small portion, hardly any meat and way too salty. You'll spend more time trying to get to the meat than actually eating it. Devon's been doing this lobster thing for a while now. You'd think they'd get a clue and order more lobsters so as not to disappoint their clients. Anyway, other than that, staff is friendly, seating is prompt and i would recomment it. Just get there early if you're in the mood for lobster. Pros: Great Price for Happy Hour. Bartenders are great. Food is great. Cons: Lobsters run out. Music a little loud at times for this type of atmosphere. more

Valentine's Day Massacre 6/14/2007

\r Chicago has some good seafood restaurants with great food and excellent service, like McCormick and Schmicks. Other restaurants like Devon overcharge customers for basic quality seafood and terrible service in a dining room that looks like it belongs on the Loveboat. If only the servers were as attentive as Gopher and Captain Steubing. Our waiter (my girlfriend and I on Valentine's Day) was unpersonable, removed and had serious attention issues ranging from trying to clear our table while we were still eating to disappearing with our check and never coming back with our change. Our Valentine's meal was about as elegant as eating at a stripmall Chilis. (Actually, Chilis might have been better.) When we told the manager about our dissatisfaction he took down all our contact information, apologized and promised us a meal voucher. We still haven't received it. Not that we're still waiting... \r \r Cons: Save yourselves. Don't go here. more

Fantastic seafood.... 1/25/2007

My boyfriend and I decided to try Devon's Seafood for a date night before a play. The atmosphere was amazing and the wait staff was incredibly helpful. Our waiter explained everything and included all ingredients in the dishes. Our glasses were always full and the food was great. The crab cakes appetizer was fantastic and I would recommend it to everyone. The portions were very filling and it was some of the best seafood I have ever had. If you want a romantic and comfortable date spot I would highly recommend Devon's for any couple. Pros: Great food, quick seating, fantastic service more

DeGone Seafood Grill 1/8/2007

Devon will soon be DeGone if it does not improve. I took my parents there for dinner and had one of the worst dining experiences. Our waiter was not very helpful as he did not seem to know the food menu nor the wine menu very well. One of our appetizers was pretty good until my mother found a jagged piece of plastic in her mouth. The manager apologized but, obviously did not realize the severity as she only comp'd us for the appetizer. When they brought our entrees out and 2 of the 4 were incorrect. At this point I believe that the guy who brought our food out unleashed some unkind words about our waiter. I will give them credit for the quality of the fish, however, the preparation is so mediocre. It's like driving a Porche, but never taking it out of first. I would rather take my money around the corner to Roy's. Pros: Quality of fish Cons: Everything else more

So happy I tried a new seafood place! 1/3/2007

Devon is a find. Thank you CitySearch. The location is convenient. The service was friendly. The food...I could write more nice words than you want to read. Repeat of other reviews - Order the crab cakes! They are all crab meat and amazing. The texture and flavor are perfect. The scallops with lobster risotto were beyond delicious! I am so happy to find a seafood place that isn't outrageously priced. I had the crab cakes appetizer, scallop dinner, and glass of white wine. The bill was under $50. You can also get fish simply prepared - meaning you pick the fish and how you want it cooked. I can't wait to go back. It is nice to go with friends or a romantic date. Pros: Food is delicious, great location more
