christmas eve! 5/11/2007

i visited dan mckluskys on Christmas Eve 2006 with a work mate. We both enjoyed our main courses...my greek salad was AMAZING, the chicken was tender and delicious and there was plenty of feta! wonderful wine suggestions from our server. lovely, friendly attitude even the evening before Christmas!!\r \r Pros: great salad, outgoing waitstaff Cons: pricey more

excellent prime rib!! 4/11/2007

it has been several years since my first trip to dan mcklusky's. i remembered that i did enjoy myself the previous time, so decided to give it another go. \r for my dinner, i had a petite filet with a lobster tail with a crab meat stuffing. about as decadent as it sounds! the steak was very lean, high quality cut of meat. this restaurant does not season their steaks, but instead just lets the beef do what it is supposed to do, be delicious! one other thing that sets dan mcklusky's apart from alot of other steakhouses, they include a salad and a side dish with your steak. that was a nice surprise. i have found that these things are usually ala carte. my dining companion had the prime rib. oh my! i usually don't go in for the more ""marbled"" (fattier) cuts of meat, but i gotta say that the prime rib was outstanding! i would definately order the prime the next time i am at the restaurant. they converted me! lastly, i am not the kinda gal thats gotta have chocolate, but the chocolate seduction cake was outrageous! chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling, dotted with pieces of white chocolate..... wow\r the service was right on! we had what we needed and did not feel like the server was hovering around the table. Pros: good steakhouse vibe, friendly service, good steaks, valet Cons: 6th street more

Deeply disappointed 11/10/2006

The first time we had dinner here was wonderful - great food, great waiter. That was about 6 months ago. This time around - not so much. The waiter was clueless. When asked about which wine he'd recommend, he told us red goes with steak. Thanks. It's sad to say but Outback has better salads, bread (which was partly rock hard here) and calamari than Dan McKlusky's. The main dishes were good, though. However after having mediocre service and so-so side dishes, we'll be having a nice steak dinner somewhere else in Austin. Pros: Steak Cons: Service, Anything other than the main course more

Excellent Lunch 9/13/2006

Tried lunch and was very pleased with the food and service. The prime rib lunch is very reasonable and very good. The vegetables were cooked perfectly. The bread preceding the meal was excellent and the fries served with their sandwiches were tops. An excellent place for lunch and I would assume dinner. The waiter was efficient, although aloof, which was OK with me. Would definitely go back when we return to Austin. Pros: Excellent prime rib more

Best Steak Ever 6/5/2005

I had the best Prime Rib ever! Top that with the Chocolate Mousse and I must say it made my evening! Nice ambience and fast and friendly service. Thank you Dan McKluskys for making it a great evening. Looking forward to come back on a Weekend to enjoy the Life Music. Pros: Good Parking, Good Value, Prime Special more

Great Dinner 4/6/2004

Dined at Dan McKlusky's tonight for dinner. Instead of the wonderful mushroom caps, we opted for something different, the crab cakes...they were great! Dinner was the peppered new york strip, which was shown to us before cooked. Again, perfect. I really liked the cognac cream sauce. My husband had the filet. It cut like butter. We saved room for desert and tried the apple spiced cake cooked in a jar. It was worth going off my adkin's diet, every carb of it. We will be back, as this is one of my favorites Pros: steaks were great, good service more

Lousy food, poor service 3/21/2004

The food and service was horrible. We tried to order the prime rib, but they were sold out. Instead we reluctantly ordered the recommended rib eyes. The meal opened with soggy flavorless crabcakes and greasy calimari. The seafood bisque was thick and cold, while my salad was warm and limp. The rib eyes arrived well cooked but lacked flavor. I don't think they applied any seasonings at all. We didn't bother with dessert. Pros: location, meat cooked properly Cons: , taste of food, wait staff more

Valentine's Day 3/7/2004

We have gone to McKlusky's several times. I recommend the restaurant totally, except for Valentine's day. I was very disappointed with the food. The service was still good, but the food seemed smaller and not as tasty. more

Great Food, Great Service 2/29/2004

In a town that is quickly becoming all chain restaurants, it is wonderful to go to a locally owned restaurant where they welcome you and treat you special. Our tenderloin was cooked to perfection! I had the best martini EVER! The chocolate seduction cake lived up to it's name. Will gladly return over and over. more

Sucks! 1/19/2004

We went on a Saturday Night with an out of town guest. This USED to be my favorite place, but I'll never go back! Waitress broought out appitizers, said she'd be right back for our order. That took 30 mins for her to come back. The place wasn't even half full. My steak was good, but my potato was tepid, my bernaise fresh out of fridge, nice and cold (yuck!) and my son's burger had to have cheese scraped off. Prices are way too high for this lack of service. Never hardly saw waitress during meal. Son had to chase her down for drink refill. Very sad to say that it's an Austin Original. Pros: Good meat Cons: Horrible sevice, sides are cold, Appitzr. from Sam's more

Dan McKlusky's 5/14/2003

I travel a lot all over the US, and Dan McKlusky's is by far not only the best steakhouse in Austin but the best steakhouse anywhere. All others pale in comparison. I don't even consider eating anywhere else when in Austin. Tom Kizer Pros: superior steaks, perfectly prepared, wonderful atmosphere more

Outdated and overrated 4/22/2003

Nothing like having a restaurant botch your order and then having the restaurant manager argue with you about it. This has happened on our last two visits. The decor is dated and dingy. If you set foot in the bar you'll immediately smell like an ashtray. They seem to think far more highly of their food than they have any right. Cons: poor service, rude management, poor food more

AWESOME 1/3/2003

I dined here twice while in Austin, both experiences were fantasic. The food is great along with the service, and the atmosphere is a nice one...not stuffy. The portions are of good size and the prices are also great. Highly recommend! Pros: Excellent Food, Excellent Service more

Not bad 12/22/2002

My husband I didn't want to spend too much on a steak and we thought that Dan McKlusky's would be a nice comprimise between Outback and an expensive steakhouse. The food was okay. It could have used more seasoning, but not too bad. The service was pretty good. Our ticket was about $8.00 more than we estimated so we told our server and showed him the online menu. He quickly reversed the charges and increased his tip. Pros: Casually nice decor, Good desserts, Service Cons: Steak was bland more

Skip it. . . 12/17/2002

Poor service. Mediocre food. Your money would be better spent at a different steak house. more

Mcklusky's is the BEST 11/8/2002

Great steak, lobster, martinis, and wine!! I live out of town now, but I often dine here when I'm in Austin. more

goodstuff 9/3/2002

Great steaks, great salmon, killer salad with home made dressings. Yummm....can't say enough. more

We'll Be Back!! 6/17/2002

My husband and I accidentally discovered the great jazz music at Dan McKluskys while driving past it on our way to another dance club in the Arboretum area. The music sounded so great we decided to stop in and listen. The wait staff was courteous and the Mushroom Caps were out of this world! Almost a meal in itself!! We found the atmosphere upbeat, yet romantic. We were only disappointed when the band stopped playing before midnight! It was great to find a place with some wonderful jazz music on the North side of Austin! more

ladies will love it 5/28/2002

especially on friday and saturday ( the auboritum location --has live jazz) great place, have been to other steakhouse and this is by far the best. Have been there about 15 time within the last year and never been disappointed; though i think the service at 6th needs a bit or imporvement to compete with its Auboritum location. Pros: food, steak sauce more
