This is what I ordered: Raita, Spinach samosa, chicken galoti kebab, cheese nan, gulabjaman. They didn't have the spinach samosa. But they had the vegetable samosa so I said...

one of the few Indian places above E70s that are good 12/29/2009

This is one of the few UES Indian places worth eating at. Most places above E70th are just plain bad. We order delivery from Dakshin at least once a week. Food is pretty good, delivery quick enough. Our only complaint is that the recipes are inconsistent. We can order the same thing twice and it will vary in taste and quality. e.g. among other tihngs, Yellow Daal... how does one mess this one up... it's surprising different every time and not consistently as good. Not sure what that's about. Pros: good food Cons: inconsistent recipes more

Great food, great service!!!! 1/16/2009

I think this place is absolutely great. I have tried a number of Indian places in the neighborhood and this place is the best. The owner was very friendly, treated us well, and shared the history of the cuisine wiht us. Definitely going back again and again. more

great food, but the manager does fuzzy math 5/27/2008

check your bill when you go to this place. i went for the lunch buffet on memorial day and the owner charged us weekend prices, despite the sign saying that the prices were 8.95 for the weekend and 7.95 for m-f. you know...call me cheap, but if im off on a monday and i get to take advantage of the weekday lunch specials im going to. had the sign said that it was going to be weekend prices for memorial day fine. i see that. but the owner just charged me weekend prices and when i questioned him, we got into an altercation. he told me that it was a long weekend and that since memorial day wasnt a working day he was charging weekend prices. i pointed out to him that his sign clearly stated m-f prices and weekend prices. he didn't get that monday was different than a weekend. he said that he could change the signs to make me happy if a dollar meant that much to me, which just about made me lose my mind. normally, im not one to sweat a dollar or two, but when he said that, i just about lost it. luckily for him, he has great food, but seriously, when an owner challenges you publicly what are you going to do? consider other options for indian in the ues. Pros: great food Cons: manager is confrontational, has 4th grade math skills more

This is what I ordered: Raita, Spinach samosa, chicken galoti kebab, cheese nan, gulabjaman. They didn't have the spinach samosa. But they had the vegetable samosa so I said I would take that instead. They didn't have cheese nan. But they had onion nan. So I said I would have that instead. They gave me a free water without my asking. The kebab was not hot in terms of temperature. It arrived lukewarm at best. It was spicy, though. Too spicy, really. Whenever I order an entree from an Indian restaurant in automatically comes with rice. I was very surprised that no rice came with the kabab. While it wasn't a total disaster, on the whole I think would try another Indian place. Chennai was better, as I recall. I had ordered once from Dakshin before and it was better. So maybe they had an off night that night. Still, if the place is not reliable ... more

Best Indian on the UES 5/6/2007

We've been here many times - dine in and delivery. True, delivery takes a while, but this is becaue they are making everything from scratch! Pros: Great food Cons: Takes a while for delivery more

Health risk! 3/24/2007

CAVEAT: We ordered delivery, so this does not necessarily apply to those who choose to dine in. Pros: The naan was pretty good, even though it wasn't what we ordered Cons: Got sick from the food; ""lamb"" curry was bad (and actually made with beef); slow delivery more

Great food (but slightly inconsistent) 1/4/2007

The food at Dakshin is the best of its kind in the neighborhood. I love the Chef's Special, Mangolorean Fry and the appetizers are delicious. A few of the dishes are slightly bland, but if you order the right thing, it really hits the spot. Always my go to for Indian take-out (just make sure you order at least 30-40 minutes before you want to eat because it takes a while). Pros: Chef's Special, Appetizers Cons: Slow delivery more

Inferior Indian food 12/3/2006

I visited Dakshin because the good reviews it had on this and other websites. While I liked the small interior and simple ambiance, I did not enjoy the food. The chicken tikka masala, my favorite Indian dish, was bland and in a sauce reminiscent of canned tomato soup. I prefer this dish because it is not too spicy, but Dakshin's version had the opposite problem -- it had hardly any flavor. more

Delicious Food 11/23/2006

I really enjoyed my dining experience at Dakshin. The food was very tasty, the service was prompt, and although it is a small place, the atmosphere was great. I highly recommend Dakshin. Pros: The food was incredible. The service was prompt. The lamb vindaloo...delicious. more

Great Food!! 8/25/2005

I started out with a Bombay beer which was big enough for two. For dinner I had the chicken tikka-masala and some garlic naan. MMmmm... it was delicious. Service was slow, but the people were friendly. It's a nice place to relax and have conversation. I can't wait to go back. Pros: Great food, Friendly staff Cons: Slow service more

Great Indian Food and Friendly Management 8/7/2005

Me and my girlfriend had dinner their about two weeks ago. It was great food. Started off with a nice tall bombay beer. I recommend the Shami Kabob appetizers. Their two round friend lamb kabobs. Throw alittle mint chutney on them, and coulda swore that my mom was in the kitchen cooking them up. For dinner I got their sampler platter. (look for it its not that noticeable on the menu) I got daal, and chicken tikka, tandoori chicken, lamb vindaloo, with some other masalas and rice and bread. They also offer a strictly vegetarian sampler. If you like good Indian food, it definetely worth stopping by. Pros: Good Food, Friendly manager more

Great Buffet 6/1/2004

Excellent lunch buffet for only $6.95. We always go there on the weekends and leave extremely full and satisfied. The selection changes frequently but the basic dishes are always available. Just remember not to wear your best clothes b/c you'll come out smelling like Indian food... but it's well worth it! Pros: inexpensive, variety of food more

EXCELLENT FOOD AND SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/10/2003

Great Indian food and the service is incredible. The owner truly caters to all your needs. When family came in he gave them apps to test their palets, and then ordered for them. Everyone was more then happy with his choices. Great food and the prices are very reasonable. more

Decent Indian in the UES 3/27/2003

Dakshin is one of the few affordable and tasty Indian restaurant in the upper east side. Although be warned their dinner menu to sit and take out prices are different. Prices are higher to dine in and their chicken tikka marsala is quite good. Ambiance is barely romantic but management tries. Dahkin also offers prix fixe lunch and buffet. Stay away from the latter since you won't go for seconds (hint hint). Prix fixe lunch comes with entree, nan/ roti and basmati rice - a good deal for $6. You're be paying twice for the same option during dinner. Pros: prix fixe lunch, spicy, tasty Cons: ambiance, ala carte bread/ rice, dinner prices more

great indian 2/14/2003

My wife and I love us some Dakshin. Chicken Korma to die for, and also anything tandoori. Service is always excellent, and attentive. Get yourself a tallboy Kingfisher with your meal! more
