Not worth a trip 12/16/2002

Unless you live nearby, I'd skip it. The gallery is a tiny room with very few objects for sale. I'm not saying it's terrible, but it's the same stuff you can get at any funky store for the same prices. I did like the tshirts, though. Cheap and clever. It's inside a big food market, which I found more entertaining than the gallery. It's worth going if it's not out of your way. Cons: tiny, small selection more

Editorial

  • The Vibe
Run by the Artists' Alliance, Cuchifritos is an innovative twist on the gallery concept: Installations and projects are often dispersed throughout the sprawling, chaotic Essex Street Market, while a whitewashed nook at the market's south end offers a more traditional, contemplative setting for art. The sights and smells of the market are inescapable, but that's the whole idea.

    The Draw
Many project spaces claim to be "interactive," but Cuchifritos truly is: Market workers selected the art for one recent exhibition, while another was dedicated to their photographs. Most shows are thematic explorations of the community's overlapping worlds, with Hispanics and hipsters both well-represented. As boutiques replace bodegas in this happening neighborhood, Cuchifritos provides a much-needed oasis of cultural coexistence.
