The Divine Pasta Company has a new look and a new name, Cube Cafe, Cheesebar, and Marketplace. While small in size, and relegated mostly to the corners and sides of the restaurant...

To a carb freak like me, how could pasta ever be bad, so I had thought. Until I went to Cube, now I don't like to talk down on a restaurant only having tried one or two options, s...

over cooked fish, tastless pizza, inattentive service 4/7/2007

my wife called cube (after looking on city search for a new place to try) this past friday night to see if we could get a table for two. the answer was yes, so we ran out the door for a (sort of) date nite.\r \r we were seated quickly at a little table that had been reserved for us. the server was quite pleasant, but as I read in one review about cube, and agree with, the service was also inattentive.\r \r we were offered two little pieces of cheese, with a fig ... a good way to introduce you to, and possibly to sell you cheese that they carry .... the cheese was very tasty.\r \r NOW TO THE REAL FOOD AND THE REAL PROBLEM. my wife ordered the salmon, which came over cooked and slightly stale tasting (just a bit off). my pizza margarita was simply uneventful. I know that this is a pretty simple pizza, but the cheese was too heavy, and the tomato had zero flavor.\r \r my wife's mixed green salad was nice ... good mix of greens with an uplifting, and pleasant dressing. the best part of the meal was the side of kale that I ordered. the greens tasted quite fresh, and had a nice flavor and texture without being over done.\r \r when the server finally did check in with us to ask how things were (we had not seen her around since the moment she placed our food and literally ran off - yes, they were busy), we did tell her that the fish was over cooked. she asked if my wife would like to order anything else. since we were three quarters of the way through our meal and she had, at my suggestion, eaten half of the pizza, she declined. the server said ""sorry"" and walked off. \r \r in the end, as the server dropped off the bill, she did tell us that she had taken 40% off the cost of the salmon. at the time I thought that this was very nice. in retrospect, I am not sure why she charged us for it at all. \r \r \r \r more

Cheese, cheese and more CHEESE 1/25/2007

I've been going to Cube since it was Divine Pasta Co. and I gotta say they know their cheese! The food is tops, the waiters are friendly and attentive (last time I ordered my waiter said ""i think you had that last time--wanna try something new? We just got in a great new cheese. . .""). That's the strength of this place. I worried at first that I'd get bored with it but the cheese menu always changes as well as the daily specials. I usually don't write reviews but I felt compelled when I read the last bad review of this place--a bad review becuase the place was packed? Hey man--make a reservation! Too LA? C'mon! Look, just go. Take a bottle, have some cheese and mellow out. Pros: All the cheese more

Make Sure You Are LA Enough for this Place... 1/17/2007

Excited to try this place, my girlfriend and I walked in on week night with our bottle of wine. After standing at the front door for about 3 minutes without anyone saying anything, I walked around the bar to find someone who would give me the time of day. She seemed a little annoyed at having to do so. ""Can you accomodate 2?"" ""No"", she says. That's it - just ""no"". After prying for more info, she informed me that the 3 EMPTY tables were reserved, and the 4 tables with EMPTY GLASSES AND CHECKS IN FRONT OF THEM (I had plenty of time to look around while standing there being ignored!) were being held for reservations. The place was not packed... there were a total of 7 tables we could have been sat at... and sure, we could have made a reservation, but hello... you can't seat a neighborhood local for a quick bite? Lame. \r \r I understand you have reserved tables, but 3 empties and 4 about to leave and you can't seat us at 8:00 on a weeknight? And such WEAK customer service? Maybe it's not too LA, maybe the employees just don't want to be there. I don't know. Regardless, we were made to feel as if we were a burden and so we left. And the valet would not refund our money. I don't think I""ll be going back. I'll stick to the other cheese plates in town (Bin 8945, BLD, Lou, etc.) where the service personnel actually care about the customers. Pros: They apparently have cheese Cons: Horrible service, pretentious, not a great crowd, loud more

A Little Treasure! 1/16/2007

This is such a lovely little find - fresh pastas and a great selection of cheeses for purchase plus a cafe serving fresh, simple food! What could be better? Our group started with a small selection of cheeses (the triple cream was divine, I've had better machengo); then we ordered a variety of pastas (paperdelle with mushroom & sausage, lasagne) and grilled fish with vegetables - everything was quite delicious and fresh. (Slight downside, the pastas could have been hotter when served, but it was an incredibly cold evening...). They don't have a liquor license but you can bring your own wine (no corkage). Service was very friendly and helpful. They informed us that on tuesdays they have a special fondue night - how fun! Pros: Fresh pastas; Large variety of Cheeses Cons: No liquour license more

cozy place 1/14/2007

having a card with your name on it sitting on the table if you make a reservation is a nice touch. the service is real friendly (although not so attentive). you can bring a bottle of wine and they will open it for you without any corkage fees, which is real nice. the food is quite good. a friend had the turkey bolognese and another had the pappardelle with italian sausade. they both loved it. i had the grilled salmon and spinach with garlic. i thought the fish was tasty and not overdone. the spinach was also good. the selection of cheeses were also good although i had better manchego cheese elsewhere. the creamy cheese (tam? -- close to a brie) was my favorite and was very very good. the flat bread was also served warm and was very good. more

All Hail The Return of Expert Waiters! 9/23/2006

This may be the only restaurant in LA where the attractive intelligence, kindness, and professionalism of the wait staff at once proves they are not wannabes looking for other jobs, and makes you desperately want to hire them onto your team. It's one thing to be served a plate of cheese. It's quite another to have your waiter hand pick selections based on the bottle of wine you brought, and tell you the story of the elderly couple in Holland or the co-op of Danish farmers who made each sampling. I'd recommend ordering 3 or 4 dishes for two people just so you can try several items at once...and the mac and cheese as a hearty appetizer. The prices are reasonable enough to allow for it, and the leftovers are even better the next day...or later than night when the gourmet gouda in your 'fridge begins calling. Pros: Cheese! ...and a staff who knows how to dish it up. Cons: Have to bring your own wine for now. more

Cheese 9/12/2006

If you like cheese, you'll love this place - the most amazing, delicious selection I've ever seen anywhere! And no corkage fee, this restaurant's for me. All the food is great -- carpaccio, pizza, salad, it's all good! more

Little Lab of great cheese and salumi 9/6/2006

If you're looking for a casual place with a great selection of fine domestic and imported cheeses with gourmet salumi/charcuterie, this is the place. The one drawback is that they do not have wine available. However, to put a positive spin on that, you can bring your own bottles you've wanted to try out with a wide selection cheeses and cured meats. more

WOW! cafe, cheese bar, AND gourmet market!!! 7/26/2006

What a great concept! I love the awesome variety of fresh pasta and homemade sauces. The staff is knowledgable and actually seem excited to talk to you about the food... not intimidating at all. They have a ton of great cheeses and meats from around the world, and they have a catalogue with info about each one.... you can even bring the catalogue home with you!!! Atomosphere is great.....modern, lots of fresh flowers, great friendly cafe feel. The slate tile for meat and cheese plates is so cool; they label the meats and cheeses for you! Specials are always amazing and beautiful presentations! Definitely try this place and be prepared to want to buy everything (almost everything on the menu is available to buy, and you don't have to be a chef!!!) Pros: Variety, Friendly staff, Marketplace Cons: parking more

Great! Great! Great! 7/25/2006

I enjoyed the atomosphere, the service was excellent, the prices were exceptional for the food value, and the quality was excellent.\r \r more

Cheese!! Yes please!! 7/24/2006

This place is totally sweet. With red walls and tons of stainless steel, it has a warm and modern feeling that is complimented by tons of fresh flowers. They have an extensive cheese menu (if it seems intimidating just ask the waiter, they will get a feel for how adventuresome you are and make suggestions) and the meats are amazing too. They serve them on these cool tiles and write what each cheese is next to it! They have lots of pastas and super thin, cripsy pizzas. The specials were all farmer's market focused and looked awesome. I had the zucchini blossoms that were crispy and light and served with the tomato basil sauce. I thought the staff were all friendly and knowledgable. There are also a zillion cool retail products that would drop the jaws of any true foodie. Everything I had was great, my husband had the chimichuri flank steak and loved it. Plus you can bring your own wine with no fee, and the menu is so cheap!! I think we both ate for under $40!! The only complaint I have is that there are limited tables inside, so if you want to get a good seat in the air conditioning, call in advance! Check out the private party room in the back! more

Great variety, wonderful cheese, excellent specials 7/24/2006

I used to go here before they remodled. They have a restaurant, cheese bar, and tons of retail items for sale. It is a nice to go for dinner, and no corkage fees! Pros: Price, Variety, BYOB Cons: Parking more

It makes me miss Italy 7/24/2006

I've been to Cube a few times and every time I feel I'm transported back to Italy-- my favorite vacation spot. The fresh pastas and sauces are amazing. I recommend the pestos, the vodka sauce and the lobster ravioli in a safron cream sauce. Sooo good! But wait, you have to also try the flank steak with chimchurri and a marinated half chicken-- even though I heart pasta and will only order pasta at an Italian Restaurant, the chicken and steak can't be missed.\r \r The pizzas are creative and delicious and in my opinion make a great appetizer to share with the table. AND you can buy them at the store and take them home with you. I love the idea of having an Italian market inside of a restaurant. My two favorite side dishes-- the cannollini beans and the mac and cheese. Mac and cheese isn't a staple at most Italian restaurants but when paired with the steak, it didn't matter.\r \r The waitstaff is very knowledgible on the cured meats and cheeses which is impressive. \r My dining experience has been great-- you don't feel rushed, they want you to enjoy the food. Not many places in LA care if you enjoy their food, but Cube does.\r \r This is a must go and a must bring friends-- really fun experience and great food! Pros: the food and the market inside the restaurant Cons: parking more

Cheap and Cheesy (in a goooood way) 7/20/2006

I live in the area and probably go to Cube 2 or 3 times a week. Really nice place, small, comfortable, nice staff. The cheese bar is awesome definatly give it a whirl (i usually just ask the server to pick as I am cheese-illiterate). Try the special pizza and the peach and tomato salad. The best part is it's BYOB with no corkage and the food is really reasonable for what you get. Parking can be a bummer-just valet. Pros: Cheesebar, BYOB no corkage, Cool Staff Cons: Parking more
