Great Food, Friendly Folks 11/17/2011

Poor service 3/13/2011

Four of us went to County Cork the night of 3/12/11. We arrived around 8pm. There were 4 empty tables. We took a seat at one and waited and waited and waited. After 10 minutes of not one employee stopping by our table to say hi, bring us water, bring us menus, or take our beer order we got up and left. It wasn't busy at all and with service like that, or lack of service, I'm not surprised. It was embarrassing for us as we were entertaining an out of town guest. Given we didn't get to try their food or beers, I can't give a rating for that. My one star rating pertains to service only. more

Great neighborhood pub! 2/27/2010

I moved into the neighborhood almost a year ago and almost immediately became a regular at County Cork. The staff is always welcoming - even to people they haven't met before (I will say the ""bad apple"" of the group is no longer employed there). The burgers are among the best in Portland and the beer selection is great - both local and foreign offerings. The only drawback is occasionally the kids take over the place, though I blame this on the parents that don't require them to behave, rather than the staff who kindly tolerate it. I recommend this place to everyone. Pros: Awesome burgers, great beer selection, friendly staff Cons: Occasionally too kid friendly (rather, poor parenting) more

Poor service and sticky tables, as usual 12/29/2009

I returned again with my wife and we had fish and chips. The table was sticky - not the first time. It was a Monday evening, yet we waited forever to get served. And once we were served, we could not get the waiter's attention to pay. Despite repeated visits, this treatment seems to be the norm. Pros: A good cold RC Cons: Consistently slow and spotty service more

Rude, rude service 10/3/2009

I'm piggybacking on the ""Rude Service"" entry. Last night, my good friend and I had dinner and a drink, each, at County Cork. Much like the chagrined Paddy's Day Poster, we were rudely treated by the waiter by the same moniker. He took away our dishes when we were barely done, didn't ask if we wanted additional beers and then blaringly told us that we ""were invited to sit at the bar now since other people were waiting for tables."" We were not pleased with the rude service and we left tips to reflect the waiter's horrible service. We won't ever go back to this establishment. Pros: Close to home Cons: Horrible service more

Rude service. 3/17/2008

I just had a really bad Saint Paddy's day experience that this Pub. I met up with 3 friends for a late lunch and support a friend's band playing there. We got there EARLY to get a table and had beers and some decent Irish pub food but nothing can compare to how rude a server ""Chris"" was. As soon as we were done eating he came and wiped off our table and placed the menus back in front of us and asked very rudely if we intended to order more and if not we could go stand by the bar since people were wanting to sit and eat. We remarked that we just finished eating (he had just taken our dishes away) and were waiting for the end of the set (which was in a few short minutes). He left for only a few seconds, in which we are stared at each other dumbstruck over his rudeness, and then returned insisting we give up the table. Nothing excuses horrific service. I won't ever be back. I called to try and speak to a manager but got the run around. Pros: The booked a good Irish Band Cons: Inexcusably rude customer service more

Family friendly+ they pour a mean Guiness+live music 2/15/2008

Hi-This is hands down one of the best joints to hang out at,share a beer with friends and feel comfortable with kids. They have good happy hour 4-6 and on Friday nights they have live music-usually of the irish variety. our 19 month old daughter loves the shepard pie!Our daughter loves to dance up front with the other kids or read the kid library.I do wish they'd add a toy box to the mix to help entertain the munchkins and perhaps a couple more highchairs as they seem to always be in high demand. There's a cool outside patio when the weather is warmer, dartboards and overall great irish comfort foods. I really recommend this place to all ages and especially families lookin to chill out without stickin out!cheers**** Pros: family friendly, live irish music, patio Cons: none really more

RE: Review by rbag from 2/6/07 11/1/2007

I was the one that rbag spoke to on the phone regarding her claim that our fish 'n' chips made her and her friend sick. Immediately after our conversation, I contacted the department of health and relayed the information to them. They told me that food borne illnesses typically will not make you sick overnight. In fact, if rbag would have complained through proper channels (the department of health) she would have discovered that they would have investigated everything and everywhere she ate for the past week prior to her illness. Had we received anymore complaints, I would have reported them IMMEDIATELY just as I had with rbag's. The fact that I didn't leads me to believe that she got sick from another source. more

Good fish 'n' chips but slow service 10/23/2007

Really good bar food in a nice atmosphere. Great back patio. Kids are allowed in there, which is nice, though the slow service can make for some pretty cranky kids. Great beer selection, and multiple dart boards are a nice touch. Really appreciate that it's non-smoking! An alternative to the Horse Brass's super smoky bar. Pros: Food, beer selection, patio, non-smoking Cons: slow service more

Lovely place to watch the game with your babe! 7/17/2007

This place is awesome. I can take my babe in there with me. I ate there for the first time this week and had a wonderful experience with our waitress who was very thoughtful and sweet. I love that I can eat fish and chips (fried in soy oil...no trans fats!) and watch baseball with my kid. Pros: sports, baby friendly, great beers, not trendy, great happy hour more

horrible service 6/18/2007

The staff was rude and argumentative. Will not be returning. There is plenty of good beer elsewhere. Pros: beer list Cons: rude staff more

unfortunate expreience 2/6/2007

My friend and I ate fish and chips from County Cork, which are usually good, however, this last time we both ended up quite sick. I normally wouldn't write a bad review, but when I called to explain my concern to the restaurant they handled it very poorly by denying it. It's clear that that is where we got sick as it was the only thing that we ate together. Unfortunately these things happen, but it's even worse when they aren't responsible when it does happen. Just look into it - that would have been a simple solution. more

The food here is absolutely wonderful, large selection of beers and nice staff. Great outdoor seating in good weather as well. Pros: Food, Beer, Staff Cons: Temperature in winter more

Cool place 4/3/2005

Set in a beautiful neighborhood sets this quaint authentic Irish pub. Once inside, one feels as though they've stepped into Ireland. Our server was friendly and attentive. The food is really good for a pub, and I felt the pricing was quite fair. Good selection of ales, (though I wish they had Smithwicks.)Overall well worth the visit, I plan on returning to enjoy some live music. Pros: atmosphere, unpretentious, beer more

Friendly Food Fun 12/17/2003

This is one of my favorite local bars in Portland, the food is good, the staff is AWESOME, and the drinks are great. There really isn't anything negative I can say about this bar. more

Beer, music, and wings! 7/26/2002

A great addition to the IrishAmerican public house theme! The live music on Thursdays features talented, rotating musicians. And no cover! More than 20 worthy brews on draught, a surprisingly decent wine list, salads, burgers, and traditional Irish fare. Excellent wings with homemade blue cheese. Non-smoking inside but feel free to light up outside on patio or sidewalk seating. Handpainted tables are a real treat. Check out the Book of Kells murals in skylights. And the desserts.......cherry cheesecake, chocolate-peanut butter pie, lemon tart, bread pudding, always good, always changes. Pros: inexpensive, friendly, neighborhood pub Cons: closes at midnight more
