Comet Tavern

My boyfriend and I were checking out the bars in our neighborhood, and someone had recommended the Comet. While I do enjoy a dive bar, being from New Orleans, this place was especially disgusting. The pool table looked and smelled like someone had repeatedly pissed on it, and the bartender picked up our drinks before we were even done. Then he acted like it was our fault for putting them on the table by the pool table. Wow. I'm sure it wasn't his first day on the job, but it seems like he needs more training before he becomes an good at customer service. Pros: Dive Bar Cons: (SEE headline) more

I went ready to hear a band that The Stranger recommened. Instead, I could even SEE the band. A bunch of weirdos did a half circle around the band and I could see ANYTHING! Plus, the band obviously had a problem with the drummer as they were asking for anyone the crowd if they were a drummer and had an key. Geez! Also, the bar was out of so many beers they had to explain to so many people what else was leff of the cheaper beers. The opening band was TERRIBLE. Now I understand that this is no quality place to hear music, just a place to drink whatever beer and listen to loud noise. I highly recommend AGAINST this place. Pros: none Cons: weirdos more

The Comet Tavern has a rich history of great bands and loyal customers. Mama Casserole does an excellent job of booking quality bands. If you want to see a good show, but you don't have much cash, this is the best place in Seattle to do so. $4 - $6 will get you 3 or 4 fun bands who are eager to please the hardworking DIY crowd. My favorite thing about the bar is the vibe. It is unpretentious and hip all at the same time. Cheap drinks and good times can be had by all any night of the week at this classic Capitol Hill icon. I once was a regular at the Comet and my best memory was when I bought somethig from a new bartener named Jason He didn't bring me the correct change and I told him the fact and he didn't agree. I said that I wouldn't bicker and ask him to ask the owner to check the books at the end of the day. Next time I was in he was tending bar and produced the correct change and I thank him. I hadn't seen him in quite some time and stop drinking and stoped going to the bars. Working swing shift I would tune into the late night show and to my amazement he was playing the drums.Hey I havn't tied one on in over twenty years and Damn I'm proud of myself. I'm sure you are too . Thanks for not giving me the treatment. The girls are beautiful and I miss all of you . Thanks for the memories. The Comet is a venue without pretense. There's a bar with some beer taps, a few chairs, some pool tables, and a stage. The crowd is very diverse depending on who's playing - you're likely to see Enimem wannabees moshing with glammed up transsexuals. Is that a bad thing? That depends on your personality. Are you the type of person that craves attention and likes to stand out? It will take a LOT at the Comet to stand out from the crowd, so be warned. Great service, great place to watch people, and if you love the local music scene this is the place to see some awesome, awesome bands in their infancy. I live in Kansas City now, but have lived in Seattle a couple of times, in the early 90's and most recently for a year 2000-2001. The Comet was by far my favorite bar on my first stay, and even more so on my second. I just recently went back to Seattle for a visit, and most of my nights ended up at my old favorite haunt. It hasn't changed a bit (except they occasionally have live music now). Good mixed crowd of people, all about the beer, and that dreamy Mike Roney (sp?) behind the bar brought me back to 1990 and watching Friday play pool. more

The Comet is the personification of the phrase "Dive bar", that being said it is one of my favorite places to drink at in Seattle. I've always had good service from the bar staff, true it is dirty but if you want luxurious carpets, expensive wine and romantic lighting than the Comet is not your place. If you're looking for a rock n roll type dive bar than try the Comet, you'll like it. more

When you've flown nearly 6000 miles, the last thing your thirsty traveller needs is a pretentious drinking den populated by plastic people drinking extravagantly named alcopops. Fortunately, The Comet provides the remedy for this with its refreshingly convivial environment which is a great hang-out for a beer at any time, with friendly staff and customers providing a relaxed and informal atmosphere. It's also a great place to practice the fine art of pool. In fact, I'd say half the people I visit in Seattle I originally met in The Comet!
