Coliseum Books 6/25/2006

Coliseum Books is a good book store both for its inventory and for its location. I enjoy walking there since its right next to Bryant Park and I enjoy going inside and looking for all the recent new books since many of them are right there on display and usually 20% off. more

Well organized bookstore with extras 1/4/2006

I loved this bookstore because there was such a wide variety of books organized well. They also have fun items like cards called "knowledge cards" in a rack up front that were interesting to look at and even some scrapbooking supplies (letter stamps). The sections are easily navigated and good books stand out and grab you. The children's section even pulled me in with a collection of well-placed old favorites. I'm not sure the prices are all that great but that's what you expect in the city. more

Strong independent bookseller 12/14/2005

Even NY is losing its quirky independent bookstores thanks to the big chains, but this one seems to be going strong. They are also larger than most independent bookstores, so they have a good, broad selection. Nevertheless, you'll also find quirkier titles and things you won't necessarily see at Barnes and Noble. I am especially partial to their sections on New York City history. more

Great Books 10/16/2005

This really is a nice bookstore. Plus I find their Bryant Park location very convenient. If you've got time to spare it's nice to pick up your selection and then head to the park on a nice day and enjoy some time outside. Also, I just feel better about not buying books at Barnes and Noble or on Amazon.com. more

Great bookstore 10/15/2005

Situated across the street from Bryant Park browsing Coliseum books is a great way to spend your lunch hour. You can order a sandwich or a frozen yogurt, sit at the counter against the window or in one of the dozen tables scattered in the front while reading the Village Voice (They for free in a bin up front) or you can just browse around the books. Some of the new selections have discounts and they often do book readings. more

Independent bookstore right in the heart of it all 8/19/2005

Coliseum Books is a true blue local bookstore that just happens to be right across the street from the New York Public Library. If memory serves me, it use to be much closer to the New York Coliseum (which was torn down for the Time/AOL building) , but its current location makes a lot of sense. Coliseum Bookstore is centrally located and has a huge selection of books to choose from. It is a genuine alternative to the mega-chain stores and is convenient from practically everywhere. more

Independent Book Store 7/8/2005

Having moved from Columbus Circle to their new digs on 42nd St Coliseum Books keeps rolling along. The stock is enormous and the employees very knowledgeable. When I went through a chess playing phase a few years back they had a better selection of chess books than most Chess stores. Just a tremendous place to lose yourself in for a few hours browsing and buying. The cafe is not to bad either. more
