Worst service ever! 11/4/2010

If there's a way to give a negative star rating...this restaurant deserves it. We had a reservation at 5:45 pm hoping to make an 8:00 pm theatre show. We were seated at 6:15... which was not a problem since we still have plently of time. Then that's when things went spiraling down. Our server took our drink order which includes two glasses of water, a glass of wine, an iced tea, and a margarita. It took 35 minutes to get our drinks! Even water service we had to beg for from a guy who was walking by with pitcher at hand while he glanced at our table and was ready to just move on by. We asked our server several times if we could get our drinks. She says that they are a bit backed up. Well I am not quite sure if they have to hand picked the tea leaves and grapes from a vine, but 35 minutes of wait for drinks is too long. So we have a feeling she forgot to enter our drink orders. Moving forward, we also gave our meal order while ordering our drinks, which is quite simple...3 Prix Fixe order, a salad and one Wagyu (kobe beef dish). Let's see order was placed at 6:25 and our appetizers came in at 7:20. Our main meal came in at 7:35 and our desserts came in at 7:45. What the hell!? We had to eat our food really fast and did not enjoy our meal as much as we wanted to. The Wagyu was pretty bland, the creme brule was watered down. UGH! Hellish hellish experience! On top of that our server was no where to be found... what a mess! So, if you want to try this restaurant... go for it! Eat at your own risk! more

Service would help, and a host not 12 12/3/2008

No service, water, b&b plates, knife for butter, full drinks, or napkins. It all helps if expecting a tip. Got fifty cents..... that is what is deserved. I got spoiled micros and couldnt get anyones attention for help. The mixed greens that are a bedding for the calamari was spoiled and the host had the nerve to argue with me upon sending the food back, WORD FOR THE WISE--" the guest is always right"!!!! Having to go to the the bar for every round of drinks eventually p issed me off. I get my own drink, send the server home. save some overhead. Its a shame that the new ownership doesnt have the opperations in consistancy. It helps to get return buisiness. I, as well as my coworkers, friends, and family will never contribute to the failure of a once very welcome and comfortable eat. Upon cashing out the server had the audacity to give us two singles and a ten dollar bill, asuming after we spent $150.00 and wasted our time that she would get a generous tip..........Wrong.. Pros: NONE Cons: everything! more

great lunch. nice service. addictive mac & cheese 7/24/2008

I've eaten at Soluna several times in the past three months for lunch. Everytime I've had great service and the food has been great. I must admit that I am addicted to the mac & cheese. Last time I was there the recipe had changed but it was still good. I think the atmosphere is really cool too. Whenever anyone is remotely close to the Civic Center area, I recommend Soluna and I always get rave reviews. Pros: awesome mac & cheese, good service, cool atmosphere more

bad quality of food 5/5/2008

This is the first time we eat at this restaurant. We bought a gift certificate online but the server said the certificate is no longer available. Unfortunally we cannot use the gift certificate for the food, but we still want to try the taste of the food, so we order a 3-course dinner and a filet mIgnon. The appretizer is fine, but the filet mIgnon is very small and a little bit salty and a little bit overcook. I think this entree is too expensive $28 for the overcooked salty filet mignon with salty mashed potato and spinach. The desert is fine but a little bit too sweet to me. I don't think I will go back to this restaurant for this kind of food. Pros: parking at night Cons: food more

Eat before jan 25, 2008 1/11/2008

Soluna's is a regular favorite of ours. We get treated with 5 star service everytime we walk through the door. The owner Rick is very curtious and greets all of his guests with a smile. If he is unavailable the bartender Jack will promptly ask if you would like a table or just a drink. The food always comes seasoned well and piping hot. They don't rush you between courses and make sure your glass is always full. The wait staff is very attentive and knowledgable of the menu. The owner however is moving on in the end of January so we arent sure what is to become of one of our favorites. Pros: Ambience, service, drinks Cons: not open on sundays more

Cool, funky decor 11/3/2007

Have visited a few times now (all dinners) and liked the food. We've always had courteous waiters - in fact, the last one we had was really funny and friendly, but very professional and attentive. When the kitchen brought out the wrong salad, he promptly got us the right one, and comped it. Most recent meal was a late night light-bites: Pear/gorgonzola salad - excellent. Lobster bisque - excellent. Crab cakes - somewhat dry. Mussels - very good. Parmesan, White Truffle Garlic Fries - good, but nothing special, and couldn't taste any truffle or garlic. The decor is really interesting and dramatic - lots of reds, neat-looking seating, beautiful lighting. Original artwork on walls. We've come before Opera performances, late night, or after visiting the Asian Art Museum across the street. more

Everything went wrong 12/31/2006

Everything that could've gone wrong went wrong. We were seated promptly but because we were seated in corner table, our waiter didn't notice us, waited over 15 minutes before we got served. I had scallops appetizer and they were burnt like as if they were just reheated; burnt on the outside and dry on the inside. I had the pork loin with a side of creamy potatoes. Pork loin was dry and luke-warm and the potatoes were still cold in the center. I informed our waiter and he just brought me another plate of the potatoes and reassured me this time he asked them to 'heat' it up warm but it was still cold again. My husband ordered the steak and it seemed odd when the waiter asked 'how warm do you want it' as we took it he meant 'how well you want it cooked' and my husband said 'medium'. His steak turned out to be slices of beef which was also luke-warm. I tried to make reservations for the night before but they were closed for a private party and with the food that night, it just led me to believe that we probably were served leftovers. Cons: bad food, unattentive service, expensive more

Wonderful atmosphere and great service 11/20/2006

We were looking for a place close to the theatre prior to a performance and found this place on line. While the portions weren?t large, the taste and presentation was outstanding. The prix fix dinners are very reasonable price for a multiple course meal. The service was superb and the atmosphere causal but elegant?very romantic. Pros: ambience, food taste and presentation Cons: portions are a bit small more

Excellent romantic lunch 8/24/2006

We had a birthday lunch at Soluna this week and thoroughly enjoyed it. The banquette seating was comfortable and the decor was generally very attractive. The soups (tomato and vegetable) were hot and flavorful and a nice size for a lunch appetizer. The crab cakes with corn salad were delicious and the cornbread-encrusted catfish likewise. The green salad with the catfish had a little too much dressing but this was a minor complaint. We had a very nice Pinot Grigio and the $70 total (including wine and tip) seemed very appropriate. Highly recommended. Pros: Decor, food, seating Cons: Looks bad from outside! more

Small portions of below average food. 7/2/2006

The first thing you notice about Soluna is the nice ambiance and friendly service. Unfortunately, that's the last good thing about this restaurant. The food is below average at best and served in ridiculously small portions. The only plate that was half decent was the steak. I could see this being a fun place for drinks before the theater but for dinner...skip it. Pros: ambiance, service Cons: food quality, small portions more

Really liked this place! 4/21/2006

We were there on a Thursday night and there was a jazz band! The food was awesome. We loved how their "big plates" can be bought as "small plates" instead. Everything tasted great and it was a fun place to order a few different things and share it all. This place is also really nice, comfy and has a little bit of a gallery feel because there's a local artists' work on the walls. We'll be back. Pros: food, dessert!!!!, music more

Perfect Before or After Theatre 3/25/2006

What a find! Just off Hyde and the theatre district, Soluna looked new. It was comfortable, spotless, great service and food. We were held up by an accident on the bridge; they told us not to worry when we called, held our table, then made sure we made it well before curtain time. They rushed, we didn't. The the cuisine was both familiar and unique, well presented, staff obviously proud, excellent value. Owner very approachable, greeted diners, cared that all was well. We returned after theatre and found late diners, a 4-piece jazz group, very comfortable atmosphere. Under new ownership and management, staff said they love working there. This will be our first choice for dining in the theatre area - we will definitely recommend this to friends! Pros: Great value, Convenient to theatre, Attentive owner more

Great Atmosphere Great Location 2/23/2006

This is a welcomed chage that. The place evolves over the course of the day. Check it out as a coffee shop in the morning, lunch place or club scene. You pick. It's all good. more

Pleasant Surprise 12/23/2005

We went to show at Orpheum last night and made an OpenTable reservation here since the menu looked interesting and the location was spot on. What a pleasant surprise. Atmosphere was fun and the food was outstanding. I had the Watercress Salad and the Duck Breast in a wonderful caramelized sauce as a part of the Prix Fixe menu. My wife started with a Trio of Pear Salads which was an innovative takeoff of other salads such as a Nicoise combining in pear. She had the Seared Scallop appetizer as her entrée. We both finished the excellent Chocolate Espresso Pot du Crème. Highly recommended! Pros: Taste, Location, Quality more

great food great service great party 12/11/2005

I had been going to soluna for a while for the night club but one day on my way to work i decided to grab lunch there. Boy was i surprised, the sandwich that i had with the salad a fries was the best ever. The next time i went, i had dinner and me and my brother faught over each others food it was so good. Not to mention the beginning courses. All around with the wondeful service and great food, its still to this day one of my favorite places to eat and i hope will continue to be for a long time. more

Great Ambience but food was bad 11/20/2005

I was there last night with my boyfriend and another couple. I had asked for a booth setting and they had they ready for us after waiting 15 minutes. We all had decided to go for their fixed price menu of $27.00 for appetizer, entree and desert. I got the mango, avocado salad, very good, my boyfriend, a tomatoe salad, yummy. My friend's boyfriend got the lamb and was not happy. My friend and i both got the sea bass that was over cooked! I should have said something, but just decided to let it go, and wait for desert. Overall, I will repeat once to see if another entree is better, if not I will not return, much better for the buck. Our total for an average dinner 148.00 with drinks. Pros: the decor, booth seating, easy parking Cons: average food, value more

Great Food, Friendly Service, Cool Ambiance 11/13/2005

8 of us dined at Soluna for a friend's birthday on a busy Sat. night. We were sat about 1/2 hour later than our reservation called for, but the staff made it OK by provided complimentary drinks for us in the bar. The wait was pleasant in the cool bar area, and the staff was attentive throughout the evening. Friendly, professional and eager to give us a very pleasant dining experience. Excellent, creative meals, beautifully presented. PreFix menu a real bargain. Bravo to the management, chef and staff. Pros: Great food, Friendly, relaxed more

Just BAD! 11/10/2005

It was my wife's b-day, I picked Soluna because it looked like a nice place and a great menu. I WAS WRONG! Our reservation was 7:15 and we waited till 8 for our reservation. We finally got seated and it took awhile to get our apitizers (which were very good). Dinner came around 10:30 while the store manager sat at a table next to us and had his entire meal with his friends and was done by that time. All the food was cold. The mashed potatos had a crust on them. The pasta tasted like it was soaked in ovean water. We sent our food back several times. The meat was so raw it looked like seared tuna. It was a horrible night and I feel sorry for the people that attended. Needless to say they let us off the hook with the bill. Cons: Cold food, reservation more

Exceptionally Horrific Service 11/1/2005

11/22/05 My friend's birthday dinner and also we were running Nikes marathon the next morning. Reservation was at 8pm but did not get seated until 9pm. The food arrived at 10:30pm. Most of us ordered pasta to load up on carbs for the race. We had to send back our food TWICE. Solunas pasta was saltier than any pickle. A medium-rare stake was first over cooked but served cold, then sent back and returned so raw it was cold inside. Bad day for the chef? But the restaurant manager was the star of the night. He set down with his friends at the table next to ours, they were done with their dinner before we got our food. Past 11pm, no bill but no food either, marathon starts at 7am, which we ran on empty stomach, try that Mr. Soluna Manager. What a nightmare, no its just sad. more

A fine lunch stop near the Civic Center 3/14/2005

I took a new coworker here to lunch and we were in and out quickly. The servers were friendly and polite and the lunch options (soups, salads, pasta) were well-portioned and affordable. Definitely one of the better lunch spots to hit around the Civic Center. If you go, try to arrive a few minutes before noon. After 12pm, the tables are usually pretty filled and there can be a short wait. more

Editorial

  • Arabesque light fixtures, drapery and plush red banquettes give this resto-lounge a vaguely Turkish vibe, although the food and crowd are firmly San Franciscan. Filled with City Hall politicos, lawyers and other well-dressed Civic Center workers at lunch and happy hour, soluna gets the pre-theater crowd for dinner, and winds down quickly after. Under new management the menu is full of hit-the-spot, California comfort food--truffle-garlic fries, crab BLT, country fried Petaluma chicken--at reasonable prices, especially during lunch.
