Treated Poorly 7/31/2012

The merchandise, while overpriced, was very nice to look at. the problem was the rudeness of the sales people and the owner when we had a problem. they mispackaged our lamp and it broke before we even got halfway home. when we returned it to the store, they said it was our fault and treated us very poorly. never had an experience like this. the owner argued with us about it for over an hour, really. we HAVE NEVER BEEN TREATED SO BADLY BEFORE. They have the broken lamp, have not refunded our money and we have no goods to show for it. small claims is next, along with the BBB. more

I went to City Lights while doing a 6/4/2012

I went to City Lights while doing a renovation because I wanted to avoid the big box stores and get something higher quality with better customer service. Well City Lights failed me on both accounts. I spent an hour and a half in their showroom looking at lights, couldn't find ""the"" pendants that I was looking for so I went through some catalogs and finally found a set that I really liked. Had to special order them. Never once was it mentioned to me that special orders cannot be returned, I know shame on me for not reading the fine print before paying. Took two weeks for the order to arrive. I was very excited until I opened them up. What I found right away was that the canopies for the lights were super cheap plastic and did not match the fixture. They look worse than what I could have bought at a big box store, certainly not up to par with the $130 per fixture I paid for them. So I began emailing and calling my sales person to see what could be done. Right away it was all the manufacturers fault, which in this case maybe but I don't care just make it right. So she agreed to contact the manufacturer to see if new canopies that matched the pictures of the fixture could be sent. Manufacturer said they'd send new ones and I was told I'd have to pay for them. UGH. Another special order and this one took FIVE weeks to arrive. When I finally got the new canopies I discovered what they sent wouldn't work with the fixtures I have. The salesperson at that point didn't seem to interested in helping much. She said they have lots of parts lying around and might be able to find me something that will match. All I want is the canopy that is pictured in the literature, why is that so hard. Ultimately I had to contact the manufacturer myself and am currently working with them to resolve the issue. Save yourself some time, money and frustration, don't bother shopping with City Lights. You certainly don't get the small hometown customer service you'd expect from a store like theirs and with no returns on special orders (50% restocking fee on instock items - OUCH) you'll be stuck with whatever you get. I'd shop at a Home Depot or Lowe's before going back to City Lights. more

I enjoyed my experience at City Lights 11/12/2010

I would just like to say that I was at City Lights last night and the minute I walked in someone greeted me and asked if they could help me. As it turned out, it was the owner, Julie. She gave me a 110% of her time. I was very impressed how much she was interested in trying to help me with my redecorating needs. Thank you Julie, I know I will be back soon. more

During a major remodel project, i was asked to shop at a gallery I found nothing for my taste. I took the recommendation of my designer and headed to City Lights. I worked exclusively with Peggy and found exactly what I wanted. Pricing is competitive, saw many alternative pieces they could order and am going back for a small pendant lamp for accent. Had a wonderful experience. Missing a light bulb I had ordered extra, but I'm sure they""ll take care of it. A far cry from some places we've dealt with who, after months, give you a box that has half the fixture in it. (waukesha business now defunct)Now back (4/11)and have had a different experience. An order(paid for) has been missing for 4 wks. It appears that the order was never placed, even though I called 3 times. What a difference a year makes. Still haven't gotten a call and it is another week. Bad customer service!! more

A Message From The Owners 6/9/2010

Hello, my name is Ted Spillius and along with my wife Julie, we are the owners of City Lights Design Showroom. We started the business together back in 1989. For over 21 years we have served homeowners, builders, remodelers, designers, etc. In 2005 we opened our current showroom on 13300 W. Capitol Dr. in Brookfield, Wisconsin. We are now the largest Lighting Design Showroom in Wisconsin. We did not become the biggest for the wrong reasons and that is why it is very disturbing to me to see some of the negative reviews on our company. Are all of these negative reviews truly from upset customers? Is it possible that some of these comments were written by competitors? With the internet one will never know but this I can guarantee anyone who shops at our store: If you have any problem or question in regard to your dealings with my company, you can contact me via emai at: tspillius@lightsus or my direct phone line at: (262) 373-2002. If needed, I or my wife Julie, will personally take care of any issue you may have with City Lights. We can only hope that anyone looking for the products we sell would not come to conclusions on our store based on internet postings, even this one from me. The only honest way to find out if we're the store for you is stop in and check us out for yourself. I think you'll be pleasantly suprised! Pros: Largest Lighting & Design Showroom. Guaranteed Lowest Prices more

employee slapped our autistic son 5/26/2010

We went to City Lights on 5/22/10 to purchase two lights for our home. After choosing our lights, my husband and I, along with our two sons, were standing in a circle with an older salesman discussing a third light we were interested in purchasing. My oldest son, who is 11 and diagnosed with autism was standing next to the salesman. Our son noticed a tape measure that the salesman was wearing on the side of his belt and put his finger out to point at it (our son has very limited language so that was his way of asking if he could touch the tape measure.) Before I could say anything to our son, the saleman slapped our son's hand. He slapped his hand!!! My son never even touched the tape measure, he was just pointing at it. My husband immediately went to the front desk to ask for a manager, but of course there was none available on a Saturday. A saleswoman finally got a hold of the owner's wife and she said that her husband would call us back on Monday. My husband stated that he felt this man should be fired, and she stated that they would never do that. We received no call all day on Monday. Finally, at 7:00pm the owner's wife (not the owner) left a message on our voicemail saying that she was too busy to call us all day and all they can do is say sorry. My husband called back and left a message for them to call us the next morning and of course they did not. We own 32 retail stores in the state and if one of our employees put their hands on a child, they would be fired immediately. It is inconceivable that this man can get away with hitting a child with severe special needs and the owners do nothing. They don't even have enough respect to call us back and give a formal apology! Cons: despicable employee and owners more

They Went Above and Beyond 4/5/2010

I went into City Lights to look for outdoor lighting. I told the salesman that I didn't want Kichler lighting because I had a bad experience with their lights and customer service and I wouldn't purchase anything from Kichler again. I didn't even purchase those lights from City Lights but the salesman took my name and number and he contacted the Kichler rep. for me. The Kichler rep. took my information and he said he would get back to me in a day or so. I don't know howthe problem will end up with Kichler yet, but I sure was impressed with City Lights. Pros: Fantastic Customer Service, Good Selection more
