Editorial review from Citysearch 2/11/2013

Forget about the surroundings and atmosphere (which were good) and focus on the steaks. If your in town looking for a great steak bypass the casino steak houses and come here....you will not be disappointed. The steak I had was the best I have had in St. Louis! The service we received was very good, both my wife's and my steak were cook perfectly to order (medium), and we were not disapponted with any part of the meal. Probably not the best place to bring kids and if you're on a budget Tucker's may be the better choice, but if you really want a top notch steak this is the place. None of the franchise steak houses are even close and it is not as expensive as the casino or some other high end steak houses that don't deliver the same quality. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 8/19/2012

We loved our dinner here at Citizen Kane's Steak House! The Steak was superb, our salad was excellent and the black bean soup was delicious! I didn't find the menu to be any higher priced than any other high-end steak restaurant ($28 - $45). I would definitely recommend Citizen Kane's if you're into steak and looking for a new place to try! more

Great Venue and Ambiance, Steaks good but lacking 10/15/2010

Citizen Kane's is definitely a steak house. The renovated home makes for a good venue and creates a nice ambiance. When it comes to the food, the steaks and pork chops (meat) are well prepared with an excellent taste. Their size are also appropriate (generous) for the price. All other items on the menu leave a little to be desired. more

Good, but not worth the cost 3/28/2009

Thanks to some special circumstances, my wife and I were fortunate to be able to go to Citizen Kane's for a recent dinner. The restuarant is beautiful, situated in a scenic old home in the heart of Kirkwood. We're pretty middle-class and most of our steak experience is of the chain-restaurant variety, but I'd been told years ago that Kane's had the best steak in St. Louis. Pros: Fantastic steak, superb Mayfair salad, nice venue Cons: Parts of the meal were mediocre, some service oddities more

Wasn't impressed 2/21/2009

My wife and I went there for our first wedding anniversary tonight. We decided since this was a special night we would splurge and go for a more upscale steakhouse. Going by what we had heard and reading some reviews on citysearch we made our decision for Citizen Kane's. Our favorite place has been Tucker's for a long time but were made to believe that Kane's was ""at a higher level"". Pros: Sauteed mushrooms Cons: Noisy, cramped, charge for refills of soda (I wonder if they do the same for coffee?) Not worth the extra money. more

Lick your Chops 12/31/2008

We went to Citizen Kanes for our New Years dinner and what a great way to end a not-so-great year. After reading a review before going that touted the pork chop and its sweet/horseradishy sauce as to die for.... I felt it a must to try. OUTSTANDING!! It was most thickest, juiceist, perfectly cooked pork chop I have ever encountered. I'LL BE BACK! Pros: location, overall menu, prices, quality Cons: loud crowd noise more

Excellent Ribeye 12/16/2008

We go to Kane's at least once a year. The Ribeye is always flawless. It is juicy and full flavored. I love whatever steak seasoning or steakbutter they use - it's spectacular. Great place to pack and artery. The wines are pretty overpriced - around 23.00 for a bottle that would cost about 7.50 in the store. The salads are mediocre as well as the sides and the service is a little above average - however the Ribeye is great! Pros: Ribeye Cons: expense more

Excellent in everyway 8/13/2008

My wife and I have been dining at Citizen Kane's for many years. I can only comment on two of the choices as we are spoiled by them. The first time dining there we were with a business associate who was taking us for diner and he insisted that we get the pork chop. Generally neither of us would have ordered that, but being guests we did get the pork chop. First of all it is a very thick bone in chop.....and I mean large. Secondly, it came with a sauce (kind of a sweet horseradish apple something) to dip that was to die for! The only other thing we have had was a steak on one occasion (they ran out of pork chops). The steak was wonderful. My son in law said it was the best steak he had every eaten. Many people do not like the mash potatoes and I must admit I always get the bake potatoe and avoid that problem. The house dressing (mayfair) is also outstanding. I am not a wine snob but enjoy a good glass of wine with dinner. One of my friends told me to get the house burgundy.....a house wine????? Well he was right. Nice glass of wine at a good price.......I had two. Pros: Everything Cons: mash potatoes more

disappointed 6/20/2008

My boyfriend and I went there for his birthday. It was supposed to be a special night, but I was disappointed in the unprofessional service (the waiter removed a plate saying, ""let me get this hot a*s plate off your table""). We weren't offered a wine list and we weren't told the special dish or soup of the day. After reading the reviews about the food, I was hoping for something special but the steaks weren't cooked to order and really were not that incredble. The food wasn't bad, but given the price I was expecting to be wowed and wasn't. Pros: good mashed potatoes Cons: service, I made reservations and someone else was seated before me, also it was very loud more

creeper at citizen kane 6/17/2008

This would be a great restaurant if a creepy guy named Coy wasn't hanging around there. He stalks girls at the bar. more

I'm still dreaming about the filet and the mayfair salad dressing 10/8/2006

My family loves steak. We have eaten at some of the nicest restaurants in the St. Louis area and we found our new favorite. Citizen Kane's in Kirkwood is amazing. During our visit on Friday, we all had the filet and salad with mayfair dressing and we're all still talking about it. The filets are around 9-10 ounces and are cooked perfectly. I love mayfair salad dressing and theirs is simply the best. It's a little pricy (about $31 for the 9-10 ounce filet) but well worth it. For 4 of us to have dinner, which included a side AND a salad, and no alcohol, it cost about $150. The service was amazing and also quick. Please stop by and give Citizen Kane's a try. Pros: Valet parking, amazing food, quick and friendly service. Cons: Nothing at all more

One of the best ribeyes I've ever had in St Louis 8/6/2006

Having eaten at several places in Boston and California, Citizen Kane's ribeye stacks up to be one of the best tasting steaks I've ever had. By far the best priced meal in comparison to other similar steak houses in St Louis. We showed up without reservations but was able to sit in their bar and have the most delighted service. Pros: Service, parking Cons: Make reservations or get a seat at the bar, very limited tables for walk-ins more

Best steaks in St. Louis. Real busy, must make reservations. 7/22/2006

Dont eat a thing all day if your going to Citizen Kanes for a steak. You will need every bit of your appetite. Salad and side comes with your meal, so go ahead and order the sauteed musrooms for the steaks ala carte, and an extra little side dish. Wine list is small but offers something for everyones pallet and wallet, you can sometimes find a gem ofgf the list if you ask your server. If you like huge filets, monster strips, and rib -eyes that look like the United States on a plate, then heres your Mecca. Save room if you can for the chocolate chip cheesecake, or a Brandy Alexander. more

Disappointed 2/15/2006

Overall, I was extremely disappointed with my experience. I was expecting better based on reviews. There was a lot of background noise. It took us 25 minutes after we were done before we got our bill. Mashed potatoes were runny. Salad was disappointing (one tomato and one olive). Meat was not cooked as described (rarer). Not many options for wines by the glass. For the money, I was not impressed. One side dish included, but extremely small portion. However, steak was very tasty, huge and had great flavor. Reservation is a must have. Pros: Size of steak, Flavor of steak Cons: portion of sides, price more

Best of the Best 9/23/2005

When it comes to steak, we are very serious and have tried all touted as ""the best"" in the St. Louis area. Kane's wins hands down with a staff that welcomes you as family and maintains impeccable service through the meal. Presentations as mouth-watering as they are, are merely a prelude to the very finest beef in the metro area and sides prepared with the same display of careful arrangements lend themselves to a wonderful dining experience. Not being from the Big (road)Apple, we only have the beef from the midwest to compare, and Kane's, quite simply, offers the very best. Pros: Child-free menu, Quality, Ambience Cons: Table Linens more

Great dining experience! 9/12/2005

My wife and I dined at Citizen Kanes for the first time last weekend. I found the resturant to be excellent overall. I had the ribeye steak and I would have to say that it was the best steak I have had in a resturant. I only have one complaint and that is that the mashed potatos were too soupy. I prefer mine with a little more body to them. My wife had the medallions and thought they were wonderful. All in all we had a very pleasant dining experience. The waiters were alway's near, but not pushy or in the way. I never had to ask for refills on anything. I would recommend this resturant to anyone who enjoys a great steak! more

Hands Down...it's the BEST 9/6/2005

If we could eat there every single week, we would. Citizen Kane's, by far, has the best steaks in STL...probably the whole midwest. All the food is good...I can never decide which side I want....I particularly love the garlic mashed potatoes and the spinach. The Mayfair salad is excellent. Service too is top notch. The only negative that I can think of is that sometimes it's a little tight in there since it is always crowded and the tables are somewhat close together, but too close. It's something I can overlook because everything else is so good. I recommend a reservation as it is always packed. Pros: Steaks, everything else Cons: tight quarters more

good steak but everything else was below average 6/7/2005

The Ribeye was a huge piece of meat and was nicely cooked). However being from NY area I expect a little more. The soup was so salty that it was unedible. This soup really should have been dumped out. After browsing though their limited wine list I ordered a bottle of wine ( $60 + ) and it was brought to me very warm. Much warmer than room temperature and the glassware was cheap. The sides were OK but small. Service was average although they seemed a little pushy for you to order appetizers and deserts ... the steaks are big enough you dont really need more food. In short the steaks were excellent!!! However I would not recommend this restaurant. I think they need to focus a bit more on details. For a total cost of about $80 / person for just wine and steaks I expect more. Pros: Steak! Cons: wine list, wine handling, sides more

Like cutting through butter! 2/10/2005

My husband and I just had the best steaks we've ever had. He had the filet, which must've come from Paul Bunyan's ox...it was huge. The side was the red potatoes with onions. I had the medallions with mushroom burgandy sauce...there were two medallions the size of two normal filets. My side was the garlic mashed potatoes. The steaks were succulant. We couldn't even speak. I recommend reservations. We sat at a table in the bar because we didn't have reservations, but they served us like we were royalty. The vinagarette dressing on the salad was fantastic. The service was prompt and professional. Highly recommend for that special dinner. Pros: quiet dining, excellent steaks, great service more

Get rid of the Vinyl Table Cloths 1/26/2004

My filet was excellent and the service was good. When I paying those kind of prices, I would prefer not to dine on cheap vinyl table cloths...Time for an upgrade I would say. more
