Chronicle Wine Cellar 8/20/2005

This wine store is a great little hidden gem in a converted motel. This was originally the cellar for the Chronicle restaurant, and when the restaurant closed, the wine store stayed behind and has been selling great wine at great prices ever since. The employees are knowledgeable and always willing to discuss the merits of the bottles they sell, offering advice and ensuring that you will make the right choice. Although they do have upper end wines, they also have a great selection of lower-priced (but not low quality!) bottles that are sure to fit into any budget. (PS Help them keep their prices low by bringing in any unused paper grocery bags you might have!) more

Hidden Gem 8/5/2005

The word is getting out about the Chronicle Wine Cellar. It's tucked back behind a diner in Pasadena and has the feel of poking around a friend's spare bedroom (that he's converted to show hundreds of bottles of wine). Without all the frills, Chronicle manages to sell very well selected bottles at a reasonable price. Real oenophiles will enjoy the selection of familiar California wines but in a little less common vintages. And they have a decent selection of Old World favorites from France, Italy, and Spain. Don't be freaked out when they make you charge your credit card at the Pie 'n' Burger. It's part of the quirky charm. more
