Good beer list, OK food and Terrible service 3/15/2010

Christopher's is one of those places that due to it's location does not put a whole lot into service. I have been there maybe ten times and have slmost always had poor service. The bartenders are particularly bad, with such a small bar area you would think that three bartenders could keep up - not at Christopher's. The wait staff is nothing short of atrocious, you are lookling at a fifteen minute wait time for drinks here. The hostess is also not helping the scene here - not a place to go out of your way for but they do have good beer and the food is pub fare - decent enough to fill your appetite. Pros: Good beer list and great location Cons: Service is horrendous, literally horrendous - no joke more

don't waste your time 2/25/2010

I have to stop with the expectations. Whenever I have high hopes for a place (see: O'Sullivans or UBurger to start) I'm severely disappointed. I read ""best of"" lists or read a great review on Yelp or plain old word of mouth that gets me excited for a burger, but 9 times out of ten it's just not very good. Christopher's has all the accolades, in fact, Food Network recently claimed it to be the best burger in Massachusetts. But it's painstakingly average, it's a pub burger and no more. I love the location, it's Cambridge, and the Porter Square area, and it brings back fond memories of culinary school for me as we used to frequent here for a drink or four after a hard day in the kitchen. Walking over to Christopher's last night we walked by my alma mater and saw some hopeful culinary students in class, ah the memories. I was excited to be back in my old neighborhood and I was excited because I was so sure we were in for great burger. They list a few different options, but to be fair and consistent, I have to keep ordering the same thing, a bacon burger for me and the English burger for Nick (marinated in Ale, topped with cheddar, bacon and served on an English muffin). I immediately know I'm in trouble when presented open-faced, there is a good inch between the meat and the space to the bun, too much bread will be a problem. The burger has grill marks on it, and of course my preference is griddled, but I'm open-minded, unfortunately the meat, while relatively tasty, is totally dry despite being cooked properly. (no easy feat) The fries are good, pub fries basically, but seasoned good, if not a little skimpy on the portions. The burger is supposed to be six ounces, but it doesn't feel six ounces, and the biggest problem really is the bread. It takes a couple of warm-up bites to get through the first layer of bread to even reach the meat, even then it's a struggle, it's way too big a bite while still being cheap with the meat. (again, no easy feat) It's totally average, and a huge letdown. Nick claims to barely pick up any hint of the Ale, his cheese is not fully melted (surprise surprise) and he also faces the same bread problem. Despite having a cool neighborhood feel, it's quiet enough that you can actually have a conversation, and the menu at least boasts several options for everyone, it just isn't very good, and certainly not very memorable. Next time I have high hopes for a restaurant based on some list, I'll run the other way in horror, because I already know it's not going to be any good. more

great food, service is a tad shaky 1/24/2009

We go here all the time. It is one of our favorites. We like the food and there is something to please everyone. Beer selection excellent. The only challenge of the place is that there are a few rather incompetent servers and when they do make a mistake or, for instance, like when our food took 45 minutes to come out, they are not understanding or apologetic. We eat here a lot and once had HORRIBLE service and food that took FOREVER and assumed because we are regular, good customers that if we spoke to the manger he would, at least, be apologetic. He wasn't. He wasn't even nice, no offer of a $5 gift certificate, free drink... nothing. It was like we were bothering him and it was our problem. That said, the food is good enough and service is generally good enough to make it worth being regulars. Good for vegetarians, but plenty for meat eaters too. Pros: food Cons: responsiveness to mistakes, sometimes shaky service more

Great Pub 11/14/2007

A great pub atmosphere is defined by a wide selection of beers, good comfort food (burgers are awesome here), a jovial crowd, and talkative interested bartenders and servers. Christopher?s has it all! I have been going here for years and have never had a bad experience. Pros: Burgers, Beer Selection, Service, Location Cons: second floor is obviously overflow seating. rare that I have had to sit upstairs though more

Burgers to Die For! 11/14/2007

Christopher's has the best burgers around!! The toppings are incredibly fresh (even the avocado which is hard to get this time of year) and the flavor of the burger doesn't seem to be masked by the grill. The atmosphere downstairs is much better than upstairs given the bar and sophisticated fireplace seating. 1/2 of the tables upstairs overlook Mass Ave and Porter Square giving people something to look at, but there seemed to be a draft upstairs that I couldn't help notice. Regardless, a place I'll visit over and over again! more

Awsome food 9/12/2007

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Cambridge. I am a strict vegetarian so it?s hard for me to go out to eat, but Christopher's is one of the best places for me. Christopher?s is my favorite place to bring non-vegetarians because there?s plenty of options or both carnivores and herbivores. The home made veggie burger is by far the best I have ever had. My other favorite is the buffalo tofu, which is very unique. Also all the cheese is made with non-animal based rennet so I can get the nachos witch are also great (esp. the yuppie nachos). Overall between the great service, food and beer selection, I would recommend Christopher?s to anyone. Pros: Great vegetarian food and beer Cons: hard to find parking more

GREAT SERVICE-SPECIALTY BEERS 8/16/2007

I have been enjoying Christopher's Restaurant for the past 5 years. My girlfriend and I swear by this fantastic restaurant. The service is second to none and the prices more than reasonable. The Tex-mex and daily specials are always a favorite. The draft beer selection is incredible. The bartenders knowledge of the changing beer is very educational and appreciated. I would rate Christopher's A 10 but have to take a point away for the sometimes hard-to-get parking. They just started running a BLACK BEAN BURGER which is great for my girlfriend, a die-hard vegetarian. If you get the chance please try this Porter Square HIDDEN-JEWEL. Pros: beer list, brunch, service, specials, homemade veggie burger Cons: parking more

Watch your drink 7/13/2007

I used to go to Christopher's on a regular basis because of its extensive beer selection and decent bar menu. I went to brunch a couple months ago and had a pretty unappetizing experience. We had 2 glasses of water with food objects floating in them, dirty silverware, and our eggs tasted like lighter fluid. I was really disappointed and when we complained we didn't even receive an apology, so we haven't gone since. It is unfortunate because I really enjoyed having a decent place to go so close to home. Pros: Close to our home, reasonable pricing Cons: No parking, bad food experience more

My favorite north of the Charles. 7/17/2006

Hands down my favorite resturaunt for day-to-day dining. Pros: Food quality, menu variety, vegetarian options more

Good pub eats. 12/30/2004

The beef fajitas were decent. The onions weren't very cooked (crispy) and the beef was barely warm. Overall the taste wasn't too bad, but not what I was craving. The chicken picatta was very good. Tasty and tender chicken. The boneless buffalo wings were quite good. Again tender and juicy chicken. But the blue cheese was very watery and bland. The buffalo sauce was quite good and just the right amount of spice. The service was good and the atmosphere was cozy. We had a very enjoyable time. There really aren't many other places with good/decent buffalo wings in the area. Pros: Atmosphere more

Veggie Tex-Mex-esque Restaurant/Bar 1/9/2003

Warm and inviting in the winter, Christopher's food fails to deliver what its atmosphere and drink list imply. The burrito is unoffensive, but stay clear of the patently nauseating Pad Thai. more

Great Sunday brunch! 11/25/2002

Great place for Sunday brunch. The food was delicious, the menu selection fantastic (and great options for the vegetarian friends), and the waitress was really good about substitutions and alterations for the menu. The one bad thing was when my friend's frittata came out covered in syrup and she sent it back, but didn't get a new dish until the rest of us were done (it was taken off the bill). Pros: brunch, food selection more
