A Taste of Home 1/22/2009

The Chile Pepper is an excellent restaurant. The dishes are fresh and uncompromisingly authentic. I know my Mexican food, and know that flautas, are simple and boring. Pros: authentic mexican food more

Bland food 8/15/2008

I went here with a friend for lunch and was unimpressed. I had heard good things about this restaurant. I ordered the flautas. The food was bland and boring. It was cooked nicely, but just had zero flavor. The service was decent, although we had to go up to the counter to pay - we waited at least 5 minutes after they took our plates away with no one bringing the bill to our table. Pros: Good location, decent service - left the water pitcher at our table so we wouldn't get thirsty Cons: Food was bland and boring more

Not worth the wait or money 11/2/2007

Very poor food. Makes Taco Bell look good. Yuck is about all I can say. The margaritas were made from some grocey store mix and I could not bring myself to finish it. Save your tummy and your time :o( Cons: parking, hard to find Yuckey food more

Good food, grumpy service 9/7/2007

The meals are good, nice sauces and fairly quick. The man running the joint (seemed like the owner) seems like he could care less that you're there. I've gone twice, and both times he seemed annoyed if you didn't immediately order. He was also adamant that he wouldn't change the meat in a dish - I just wanted carne asada in my burrito instead of ground beef. Pros: Food Cons: Attitude more

The Best Mexican Food in Town 9/10/2006

I found that the food at the Chile Pepper to be refreshingly authentic. The dishes to come out of the kitchen are incontestably some of the most delectable Mexican dishes that I have ever had in the US, Mexico or anywhere else in the world. The service was prompt and attentive. The atmosphere was quaint and relaxed. I cant wait to visit again!! Pros: superb food Cons: parking can be dificult to find more

Best Mexican Food in Seattle 8/29/2006

Authentic home made Mexican food that tastes and smells of freshness. If the decour does not make one feel like they are enjoying the calm and relaxing atmosphere of Mexico, once you taste the food you feel like you are back there. Pros: Great food in a great atmosphere and friendly and intelligent service. more

Very disappointed 4/16/2006

The ambiance was very authentic, but the service and food was awful. The chips were so stale they hurt my teeth. When we asked our server, who also seemed to be the owner, what type of tequilla he had, he got into an argument with us. First he wanted to know if we planned to get drunk (we did not) then told us if we didn't like his tequilla (which he couldn't tell us the name of) we should get beer. We ordered queso fundido which tasted like melted velveeta and the 4 tiny flour tortillas that came with it were also stale. The owner did bring us a free sample of his tequilla for us to try, but by that time we wanted to just pay and get out of there. This was the absolute worst Mexican food we have ever had in Seattle. Pros: no wait for a table Cons: bad food, bad service more

Best Mole in town! Slow food beats fast... 4/3/2006

This casual, friendly dining establishment serves up excellent, authentic food from the central Mexican states. Forget Southwestern, forget TexMex... this is delicious, unadulterated Mexican. No one in town beats their mole. Enjoy lounging with your ""slow food"" and a Negro Modelo in a relaxed atmosphere. Ask about the soccer game, Mexico, or the food and you'll enjoy a friendly and enlightening conversation. If you squint, you'll swear you were in a small village tucked away in the Tehuacan valley. Regarding the two bad reviews. First, if you didn't realize the person serving your food was Mexican, than I'm not going to accept your take on ""authentic"" Mexican. Second, Soccer is the national sport of Mexico. So if there is a big game, the TV in every authentically Mexican restaurant on the planet will be tuned to it. Imagine eating out in Greenbay during a Packer game. Pros: mole poblano, friendly service, mole poblano more

Me gusta mucho! 5/10/2005

I love this restaurant. It's not fancy, but it's defintely where I go for great tasting Mexican food and small but strong margaritas. I've tried nearly the entire menu, and yet I still have a hard time trying to decide what to get. The verde sauce and the mole are both delicious and spicy. Love the waiter. He's gruff, but he smiles -- and he knows me well enough to bring a marg straight to the table. :) Pros: Great food more

Good eatin', cheap 2/3/2004

I had chile rellenos with an outstanding mole sauce (the house specialty) which just blew my mind. The place is clean, well-lighted, open, and full of plants. Service was friendly and quick. I truly enjoyed my meal here. Pros: Food, Convenience more

Authentic 7/22/2003

I just came back from spending a semester in Mexico and have been missing the food since I left. Fortunately, a friend recommended The Chile Pepper. Unlike the Azteca-Taco del Mar crap that tries to pass for Mexican food, this is the real deal. The waiter/cashier was very nice and we chatted for a while about Mexico. Overall, I would say that this is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Seattle. The people who wrote the previous reviews leave me the impression that they have never spent any time in Mexico. I have highly recommended this restaurant to all of my friends and so far, all have said great things about The Chile Pepper. Pros: Great food, Good Prices, Friendly Service Cons: Parking more

!Que comida mas yuck! 2/8/2003

Greeted by a Latino gentleman of a certain age who served as host, waiter, and cashier (and perhaps chef?) as he watched Telemundo futbol, I had great hopes for this place despite the fact that we were the lone diners at 7:30 on a weeknight. We got a very simple soup before the meal (a good authentic sign, despite its blandness). Alas, even the items listed on the menu as specialties were not authentic, not tasty, and not even the slightest bit spicy. Id say this one was truly terrible, even by Seattle standards. Pros: Uncrowded Cons: Terrible food more

Pretty dang tasty!! 1/21/2003

I figured I'd give it a try and wasn't disappointed. Seated quickly & given ample time to peruse the menu while enjoying chips&tangy salsa. The margarita is made with a ""white tequila"" - who knows what brand it is but it hit the spot. We had queso as an appetizer and it wasn't bad--face it, how bad can you mess up melted cheese? The chicken mole was surprising in its taste--not what I'm used to, but good nonetheless. Took a few bites to adjust but the flavor was sublime--it doesn't clobber you, but builds slowly. I didn't understand the sesame seeds sprinkled on top--not bad, but odd. My lady's chicken enchiladas were tasty as well, not drowned in cheese and red sauce, so that's a plus. Overall, the best recommendation I can give is that I'd go back and look forward to trying other entrees on the menu. more

Restaurant living on past laurels 12/3/2002

Though this restaurant seems to have achieved a reputation during the 1990s, the two times we have visited have been major disappointments. It's not an exaggeration to say that this is the worst Mexican food I've had in Seattle. The lentil soup was too salty. The guacamole consisted mainly of water, onions and tomatoes with the faintest whiff of avocado. The chicken mole was dry and undernuanced, and the chile relleno was goopy. This isn't even the best Mexican food on 45th Street: Guadalajara, Beso del Sol and even Taco del Mar are more palatable. more

Homecooked taste 9/2/2002

I've been going here for years. Consistently delicious plates abound, but definitely try the namesake Chille Pepper dish..... Yum! Pros: Chille Rellenos! more

None better than Chile Pepper 8/8/2002

Tired of Americanized Mexican food (i.e. Azteca, Las Margaritas, etc...) and looking for the real thing? Try the Chile Pepper. There is only a handful of restaurants where I would want to eat everyday; Chile Pepper is one of them. Though I haven't had everything on the menu, I recommend the carne assada, enchiladas, or chiles rellenos. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, Chile Pepper is the place! Pros: authentic, well priced, quick service Cons: hard to find parking more

WAY better than Azteca 7/24/2002

I have always enjoyed the excellent food here, even before they moved to Wallingford from the Ave. The Chile Rellenos are a standout and the Queso Fundido (sp?) is a delicious if decadent appetizer. NOTHING at the Chile Pepper has ever tasted canned - ridiculous!! I recommend it to everyone. Pros: Chile Rellenos, Good Value, Family Run more

Worse than Azteca 7/19/2002

Worst Mexican ever. Had the shredded beef tacos which came w/ some white rice and bland refried beans. Evrything tastes like it came from a can and was ""made"" in a microwave. Even the chips were stale. On the plus side during a Friday night visit the place had plenty of open seating. No muy bueno : ( more
