uninspiring and overpriced food 5/23/2011

I was not impressed. the food really didn't taste great. we ordered a variety of small 'bite' dishes since the main dishes were overpriced and didn't sound that appetizing. we tried the mac & cheese (it was ok), the sushi (it was average - if you want sushi, go to a real sushi place), the beets (probably the only good dish of the night), and the shrimp wrap (average as well). Both my wife and I also felt 'heavy' after the meal, even though we didn't eat a lot. The service was good but nothing to write home about. Overall the experience was average and I don't expect to be back. more

Totally over-hyped 5/21/2010

Outrageously expensive, ordinary food and service. I personally think it's just the hype that got the people there. Heard good stories about it, went there. I don't feel anything special about it, just a regular restaurant with regular ""ok"" food. But the price is much higher compared to similar quality and choices in other establishments. Pros: Can't think of any Cons: Outrageously expensive with mediocre quality of food, servic more

Downright horrible service and food. 5/4/2010

Recently visited the restaurant for dinner with a couple of close friends, we were all extremely disappointed, both at the level of service and the quality of food. Not friendly at all, have 7 people, they tried to sit us at a 6-people table when there are a lot of big tables available around, and we made reservations prior to arrival. All of us needed to squeeze in before we can fit at the table, not until we complained about it before they put an extension for the table. Pros: Good Location Cons: Poor Food and Service more

okay food, terrible service 2/17/2009

My friend and I decided to take advantage of the restaurant's DineLA menu. Upon arrival, we waited about 10 seconds (not a truly terrible thing) before the hostess placed her call on hold and acknowledged us. She then led us to a small, circular AND WOBBLY table at the back of the restaurant next to the kitchen. When we took a look around, we noticed that there were literally 4 PEOPLE in the restaurant dining area (both couples had much better tables than we did). We asked to be seated somewhere else, and our only other option was the small circular table right in front of our original table. Apparently, the 4-person table next to us was out of the question. Disgusted, I pointed to a table with bench seating. After the waiter went to ask the hostess if that was okay, we were finally seated. Dinner itself was so-so. I understand that perhaps ordering from a prix fixe menu during restaurant week may not be the best indicator of the restaurant's true quality, but it should be similar, no? My short ribs were a bit dry, but my friend did enjoy her risotto. What made the evening worse was when the waiter, Raphael, placed the bill on our table WHILE WE WERE STILL EATING DESSERT. (The restaurant, by the way, was only about half full. And the seats two tables down from us - undoubtedly his territory - was empty.) He even had the audacity to check on it a few minutes later. I only get to see my friend about once a month, so our dinners together are usually a couple hours long. We've never had an experience like this before. We felt so rushed and uncomfortable that we hastily paid our bill and cut our conversation short. So unless you want to eat mediocre food at a table in a subpar location while getting the evil eye from the waiter, by all means, don't try Chaya. In the vast city that is LA, I'm sure you can find a better food experience in a better atmosphere with better service. Cons: SERVICE/WAIT STAFF more

DO NOT VALET PARK AT CHAYA BRASSERIE 10/3/2008

The restaurant is very good. Wait staff was friendly and personable. However, DO NOT VALET PARK THERE. My vehicle was damaged while in their possession and they are refusing to take responsibility. BEWARE!!! Pros: Food Cons: The Valet Parking more

The Best Restaurant in LA 6/23/2008

Chaya Brasserie is a fusion of Japanese and French cuisine and it was fabulous! The food was beyond delicious. I recommend the filet mignon. We had a sushi appetizer special that was amazing! The service was outstanding! They were constantly refilling our water and at the end the end of our meal before dessert they cleaned off our table with one of those crumb brushes. Our waiter was great, he explained everything we asked about on the menu clearly and was very friendly. The location is great, right off Roberston Blvd and the atmosphere is great too! I recommend a reservation later in the evening. We had a 7:00 reservation, got there early, and were the first ones to be seated in the main dining room. I think it would add to the atmosphere if there were more people and by the time we left, it was packed. By far, this was my favorite restaurant that I have eaten at in LA! more

Amazing place to have a group dinner or party! 4/6/2008

After checking out several different places, I chose Chaya Brasserie as the venue to have my birthday party. The manager, Michael, was super-helpful and flexible. He worked with me to make the night exactly what I wanted it to be and I appreciated it very much. Pros: excellent food, great acoustics and ambiance more

My favorite Chaya - Great Decor - Wonderful Menu 3/26/2008

Valet parking and dress well. If you look right the staff is exceptionally helpful. The entire menu is delicious, nothing to avoid, eat whatever strikes your fancy. Some tables in the back are a little cramped and loud, so make sure to get a table to your liking. The other reviews cover it all. Not nearly as loud or as young yuppie as the Santa Monica venue. Enjoy! more

Great Happy Hour! 2/28/2008

I've only been for happy hour, but with their happy hour, it's the only time I need to go. Food specials range from $3 for edamame up to $7 for popcorn shrimp. But they have other interesting items on the happy hour menu in between those prices including sushi. My girlfriends and I go and just order one of each and then have a tasty martini. You do have to sit in the bar area, but we haven't had trouble getting one of their cute little seating areas. The ambiance in this place is also great! Pros: Great Happy Hour Cons: Parking can be rough more

Great food, extra mile for customers 2/7/2008

Tried the LA Dine tasting menu last night. Very solid food. A little bit on the heavy side, but tasty. There was a problem with me bringing my happy hour drink to the table, so the manager of the restaurant brought me a bottle of champagne to replace it. Not attitude here, just great service, including our great server, and wonderful food. I've been here many times for drinks but never for dinning, and it surpassed my expectations. Pros: Great service, tasty food Cons: Make reservations because it was busy more

Dine LA week, Great Deal! Yummy food! 2/3/2008

Go Now!! Right now is dine about LA week! $34 for a 3-course pre-fix menu is awesome. The food is delicious and the service was pretty nice. Although the place is very loud, but it is a nice place. I also ordered off the regular menu and I am so glad I did. They made a wonderful seared foie gras with a truffled mac & fontina cheese with crisp bacon & mushrooms. It was just pure perfection! The only thing was there were too many flavors fighting for my taste buds attention, nonetheless wonderful! If you want to see my full review of their dineLA menu and for fabulous pictures of the food go to my blog, kats9lives on blogger. Pros: Lots of dishes with Truffle more

Delicious! 12/17/2007

The food was absolutely delicious. The best dinner I've had in a while. Pros: Great food and service Cons: Loud and very expensive more

Sneaky Service 9/22/2007

I've been to this restaurant before, and the food was pretty good, though VERY overpriced for what it is. I went there last Friday night, and had a very negative experience. Our waitress asked if we wanted cocktails, when we said we'd just like water she asked if we wanted ""sparkling or still"" which is a familiar ploy to get customers to buy Pellegrino or the like. When we said still, meaning nice, free, good 'ol tap water, she proceeded to bring us an ultra Los Angelesesque enormous, waste of plastic $7.50 bottle of water. This was a very sneaky little trick to get herself a larger tip, which I assure you she did not get. I don't need some waitress forcing some obscenely overpriced water down my throat. The food is alright here, but not if you are going to be treated like that. I will not be returning. I'll be going to The Hungry Cat where the service is always top notch and the food is a million times better. Pros: Chicken gets a 7 out of 10 in my book. Cons: Pretentious, under-handed service, overpriced more

Fantastic 8/14/2007

Fantastic lunch spot - try the burger and a killer happy hour! One of the coolest places in LA without being a total scene. more

Great Food Served With An Attitude 5/16/2007

We dined at Chaya for the first time recently and found the atmosphere great, the food delicious, but the service was lacking. There wasn't much personality coming from the bartender, the hostess had us wait about 30 minutes after our reservation time to get our table, and then we ended up with a waiter with an attitude. He was never very warm and gratious to begin with but when I commented on my entree, he showed no interest in making me happy. I ordered the halibut with scallops and sake broth on rice. There were no scallops (he told me they were in the broth), the halibut was surrounded by shrimp (not listed on the menu) and sprinkled with peas (also not on the menu). He made no effort to suggest an alternative, just took away the plate when I told him I didn't want it and brought back a menu and left again. We might come back but there are plenty of fantastic restaurants in L.A. with fantastic service. Pros: Food, Atmosphere Cons: Service more

Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful! 5/6/2007

While visiting L.A., our concierge recommended that we have dinner at Chaya. We had the most amazing meal, the best service, and fantastic drinks! I loved their martinis! Thank you, Chaya, for being the highlight of our trip to Los Angeles! Pros: Amazing food, delicious martinis, great service. Very professional. Cons: None. more

Never disappoints! 11/9/2006

Every time I go there I kick myself and say why don't I come more often. Like most of us foodies out there, we keep looking for the new ""it"" restaurant and turn our nose up on the great standards around town - This is one of them! The food never disappoints, perfectly prepared, always inventive, and delicious. The ambience is chic, the service is prompt and for the money you could can't beat it. Take that special person out there soon!!! Pros: Beautiful restaurant, first class food more

Great restuarant with a Manhattan vibe 11/5/2006

this restaurant (and the one in Venice) has excellent food and a great ambience. The food is eclectic and creative. It's always packed and great for a date or with a group of friends. A little pricey but the food is worth it. more

best lychee martini 10/30/2006

monday night (all night) happy hours are great! no one can beat their lychee martini! it is not too sweet and has the right amount of alcohol (not overpowering, but not watered down either). during happy hour, i think it is about $5.50. not bad. the bar food is also good and affordable. can't go wrong with the spicy shrimp rolls. as for dinner, it is a bit pricey. it is good but not spectacular. it is a good place to just hang out after work. Pros: lychee martini more
