Charlie's Austin

For a while there, I was a "regular" at Charlie's restaurant. I was going to this club every Friday night even though, I'm straight. I throughly enjoy the music and cocktails. The bartenders rock and make great drinks! I love the courtyard when you want to get away from the dancefloor. The only reason I'm not going there as much is because I'm getting married and moving to Round Rock but if it wasn't for that, I'd still be there every Friday!!! LOVE CHARLIE'S! Charlie's has been the oldest gay bar in Austin since a former city council member got Dirty Sally's, next to UT, closed down in the late 80s. Charlie's is friendly and about the only place in town that welcomes drag queens. It's the most ethnically diverse, too. Any of the other bars you will be pretty conspicuous if you are black or asian, and even hispanic is unusual. Austin is has a very racially segregated gay scene, but this is the one place in town that isn't true. Plus, you can pick up good ol' boys when the leg' is in session, since it's right down the street from the capitol building. On any given night, Charlie's is always busy, especially on Tuesday and Friday. The staff is always friendly and drinks are the best and usually cheaper. Parking is great and free all the time. They don't have a great dance floor but the music is great. Everyone is always welcome at Charlie's along with all races of people. There are always a lot of hispanics but that makes it good. Charlie's welcomes hispanics, blacks, whites, drag queens, leather, cross dressers, anyone who is gay and a few straight people. Shows are always good and lately the dancers have been great. The staff is great and most of them have been there more than 10 years. Also, the place is always clean. Its an old building but they keep it up and have a full time janitorial staff. Charlie's is fun and busy alot, they didnt get that way by having horrible dancers and poor service. I read this rude comment made about Charlie's and Manwatch Dancers and Marcy and everyone knows its that old stripper that got to fat for Marcy to book anymore and is now trying to take over her business. Anyways, there is good to find in everyone and any place if you look for it. more

This place is full of things people do illegally, drunks, bad outfits and drag queens. The staff is terrible and The Manwatch dancers are horrible. Marcy Fletcher is a real witch and she is there way to much. Pros: none Cons: everything, terrible music, gay country singer more

I just turned 21 and was excited about hitting all the clubs other than the only one I could get into before my birthday and most bars were cool with me but one wasn't...Charlie's was way mean to me, starting at the door where my ID was way overchecked while my friend who was UNDERAGE just rolled in, inside there was not much of a crowd (you'd think they'd welcome a cute young guy) and the bar staff were slow to come around, the DJ was playing tunes like we were in Mexico City and when I finally got a bartender, he was rude and the drinks were weak. I know that I am cute and I couldn't believe that this bar treated me so weak. Cleaning would create an improvement. Maybe Monday is just a slow night. For the past few years EVERYTIME I come in here some great staff member has been released and this year it's the same thing. This place isn't the cleanest or the trendiest and what it does have going for it is it's staff, stop letting them go! more

Last night I went to Charlie's for my birthday and due to some drama they have with the fire marshall was ushered in through the patio door that they use to take out the trash, then my friends and I were herded into a line by the patio and led around towards the side bar, when we were about 15 people away from finally paying our cover we gave up and snuck through the kitchen area. After getting inside we had a couple drinks and left as we were over the drama of getting inside. This bar is fun at times (rare times) but I refuse to have to be led around like that because they can't sort out thier drama. What a bad start to a Friday night. This place isn't like the other bars in town but you have to give it some props guys. First off some of the staff are more interested in themselves it seems but check out Gerald in back, Carl on the patio, and Joel who seems to float for great service and fun personalities. Also I'll admit it's dead on Mondays and Wednesdays and some Saturdays and that it's hit and miss on Sundays and Thursdays BUT Tuesday this is the only game in Austin, CUTE young crowd, fun show, and on Friday the drink special can't be beat and it's quite crowded. Charlie's has been around for ever and everyone who goes there has been there since. But if you want to party with the locals. This is the place to go. Very, Very mixed crowed and lots of customery gay crusing. One of the favorites at Charlie's is there Margaritas. Dance is always good after midnight. AUSTIN #1 PARTY BAR GAY OR STRAIT, & now they are 18+ except on Friday..Now that parking in the 4th street area has gone up to $8 or more it is nice that Charlie's has a lot that is FREE every nigth. Also there are a lot of great changes at Charlie's like they open every day at 11am & remodled the kitchen, hired a full time chef to serve lunch and dinner 7 days a week,11-2p & 5-9p plus all the dancers and shows every night. A newly remodled patio to have a drink and a smoke. All in All they have it going on every night. If you need to inject a little sleaze in your evening, here's your chance. The crowd at Charlie's seems to very quite a bit night by night, but, it can be fun if you're with the right company. Amateur strip night is tragic and wildly-entertaining. more
