Editorial review from Citysearch 9/2/2013

Dr. Theisen simply cares for animals. My chihuahua had been incubated for 11 hours with congestive heart failure. I placed ""Frida"" under her care and Frida has maintained her health (from the original hospitalization in May, 2012) without worsening symptoms for 17 months. Seems something close to miraculous. Unfortunately, I had to relocate away from Austin, but now the prognosis for her could very well to survive for years and die of something completely unrelated. Dr. Theisen pinpointed the necessary medications for Frida and it has not been necessary to increase them from the outset. There's no one better with whom to entrust your pet. more

LOVE Dr. Theisen 1/30/2012

Dr. Theisen has been treating my Golden Retriever for about 2 1/2 years now for an immune/blood disorder and most recently for seizures. I've always had dogs in my life and have seen a lot of vets. Dr. Theisen is by far the absolute best! She is honest and comforting and takes care of my dog (and me!) as if we were her own. I can call up to the office with a question or concern, and she will get on the phone and talk to me...and we discuss together the best treatment options. I really have no other words to describe her other than awesome. I am so thankful for her specialty and know that my best friend is in the best hands possible! more

Dr Bevan is the best! 4/27/2010

I cannot say enough good things about Dr Bevan at CTVSH. He helped me and my pregnant dog get through a very difficult episode. Although my girl didn't survive whelping, The ONLY reason I had a litter of puppies survive is due to the diligent efforts of Dr. Bevan. Thank you Dr. Bevan! Pros: Dr. Bevan saved a litter that would have otherwise been lost Cons: Did not experience any more

THANK GOD FOR CENTRAL TX VETERINARY! 2/22/2010

I have no complaints- to the person below that had an issue with the wait... keep in mind- late night they are an ER clinic... it's better than a human ER wait time! LOL... Pros: Knowledgable staff, GREAT VETS, ORGANIZED & PRECISE! more

Great Service all around 1/10/2010

I took my 5 year old Shepherd Mix because she was favoring her back leg. Turns out, she needed knee surgery. Dr. Runk explained EVERYTHING to me and answered ALL of my questions. She was very patient and never made me feel rushed or that I was asking something stupid. I was able to leave my dog there that day for the surgery. Dr. Runk called me immediately after the surgery and gave me all the details. I was very impressed and very pleased with how quickly my dog bounced back. Unfortunately, my dog needed surgery on her OTHER knee very soon after, but I was completely confident and at ease with having Dr. Runk perform the second surgery. I highly recommend this office. After each surgery, I would pick up my dog and the staff was there to review all medications and postoperative care. My dog and I are very lucky to have them around! Pros: friendly staff, great doctors Cons: long wait time more

Wonderful doctor and rehab staff! 6/1/2009

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Runk! We have a four month old puppy with an injured leg who has been in a splint for about 6 weeks. Our regular veterinarian wanted us to see an orthopedist to see if it was time to do surgery on his leg rather than just keeping it stabilized. I really didn't want to go that route with such a young puppy, but we went to see what the specialist had to say. Our first appointment was with another orthopedist in another clinic. We waited two weeks to get an appointment and then waited an hour and forty five minutes past our appointment time to see the doctor! Why we waited that long instead of walking out is still a mystery to me! When we finally did see the doctor, she didn't take a new xray (the old one was two and a half weeks old and on a puppy of this age, that seemed like a big deal to me!). She immediately said that he needed to have surgery and 6 weeks of absolute crate rest to heal. When we started to ask questions about the risks involved, whether there was risk in waiting, and just general things you would want to know before allowing someone to cut into your puppy, she became very irritated with us. She had no interest in answering our concerns and seemed to be getting angry with us for daring to question her mandate. She offered to let us see another orthopedist in her office for free to get a second opinion, but that would take a week and a half to set up. In the meantime, knowing that she was the owner of the clinic and that she would benefit from our business even if we used the other orthopedist in her clinic, I decided I didn't want to go there any more. She was really quite offensive and we left without any answers. I called my veterinarian and explained what happened and asked if there was someone else we could see. She got us an appointment in two days with Dr. Runk. Dr. Runk's attitude was so refreshing - she was open, optimistic, and happy to answer my questions. She immediately told me she couldn't offer an opinion based on a two and a half week old xray. She did an exam, took and xray, and said that she did not think my puppy would benefit in anyway from surgery at this time. His leg was healing well and, although there was one bone that was slightly out of place, she didn't feel that trying to move it with surgery would be worthwhile at this time. She couldn't promise he wouldn't need surgery sometime in the future, but she was very optimistic and scheduled us for physical therapy instead. I was ecstatic! Even if we have to do surgery down the road, I completely trust Dr. Runk to do that. She answered everyone of my questions and was patient and understanding. Everyone there is smiling and happy and I don't have to hesitate to leave Rev in their care during the day for his water treadmill sessions. I think they also do all kinds of other specialty care. If your veterinarian recommends seeing a specialist, ask for a referral to these guys! Pros: patient, optimistic, really know what they're doing Cons: haven't found one more

IRRITATED!!! 8/4/2008

Although they have qualified Vets here, the wait time to see one is obscene. Last night I sat in the exam room 40 minutes and still no vet. The waiting room was empty. Was told they had two vets and only one room ahead of me. Ummmmm, so why 40 minutes. The last time I was there I waited 30 minutes. Needless to say, I left and went to the AMPM Clinic down the road and was seen immediately. If there is going to be a long wait, the front desk personnel should at least advise the cutsomer of this. When you bring your pet in after hours, it's because there is a problem and the last thing anyone needs to do is sit in a small room with your pet for 40 minutes. I've always waited a long time here and I vow never to go back. Pros: Good Vets Cons: Long Wait Time!!! more

Dr Kerpsack is a genius! 4/11/2008

Dr Susan Johnson of the Elgin Vet Hospital performed a routine spay operation on my 6 mo German Shepherd. Aware of her megasophagus diagnosis she refused to release her to me to care for her during her post surgery recouperation, reassuring me she would be fine spending the night at the hospital. When I arrived the following morning my GSD WAS WEAK AND THROWING UP red fluid. Dr. Johnson wasn't alarmed by this and actually said this is normal. I didn't take her home because of her very grave looking condition so I sat outside with her on the lawn and after a short while she violently gagged and threw up red fluid, gave a high pitched cry and collapsed. Very upset I told the Dr. who after anexam and xray told me she had aspiration pneumonia and it didn't look like she would make it. I was hysterical. This Dr has to be the most incompetent Dr (don't get me started). With a referral I rushed to Central Texas Veterinary Hospital. Dr Sharon Theisen rushed out of the building upon my arrival, scooped my dying German Shepherd out of the front seat and whisked her into hospital. I was shocked and impressed by her enthusiasm. Dr Kerpsack met with me moments later and I was told her throat was full of newspaper that was in her cage and that she spent the night eating!! The aspiration Pneumonia Dr Johnson diagnosed her with was not correct. What she saw on the xray was her stomach jammed up in her throat. She gagged so hard trying to dislodge the newspaper she coughed her stomach into her enlarged esophagus and it was strangling her stomach to death. Dr Kerpsack, who is a living hero to me and obviously a talented and intelligent surgeon saved her life. He was knowledgeable, patient and all business and I am so thankful for his expertise. Upon Sheena's leaving the hospital, Dr. Thiessen, also my hero, remarked what a lucky dog she was. I was the lucky one. Sheena Von Jetta saved my life years later and she is and will eternally be my special little hero. CTVH is amazing! Pros: exceeds all expectations Cons: by referral more

Great place for doggie surgery. 4/4/2008

Dr. Kerpsack put a new hip in my one year old Border Collie. Pros: Professional Cons: parking more

They are so good... 9/23/2006

It's unfortunate they are not ""regular"" vets. My ex-regular vet reffered me to CTVH after I did not heed her euthanasia advice. I met with Dr. Locke & Kerpsack and can honestly say they are the best vets I have ever worked with. When I dropped my dog off for surgery I was 100% confident that he was going to be ok. Pros: Knowledgable, Compassionate, Professional more

Hip Replacements 4/21/2006

We were referred to Dr. Kerpsack by our vet for our chocolate labs hip replacement. We were very nervous about the costs and making the decision to proceed, it was a $3500 operation. Dr. kerpsack was very informed and is recognized as probably the most qualified surgeon in Austin to perform these surgeries. There are a lot of possible side effects that he was very upfront about and in the end helped us reach our decision to try the surgery. So far we have had a great outcome and would recommend to anyone in the same position weighing the costs vs benefits. Pros: Knowledgable, Informative, Competent more

Simply the Best!! 12/28/2005

Out of necessity my dog and I were referred to Dr. Beardsley due to a botched surgery from another vet clinic (seems to be a common thing at this clinic). I can not say enough positive things about my experience at central vet hospital...the staff is friendly and helpful, Dr. Beardsley really cares and took the time to explain to me exactly where the last surgery had gone wrong and what options we had. And she values ""quality of life"" for my dog more than just finances, or easy solutions. We ended up with our dog in physical therapy and had a wonderful experience with Deborah who is in charge of the pt department. She is so friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. I am so glad that I found Central Texas Vet Hospital. It has renewed my faith that there are great people that really care about our animals! Pros: great staff, excellent doctors, reasonably priced Cons: by referral only more

They truly are a Godsend 10/4/2005

My dog was transferred to Central Texas Veterinary Hospital to repair a botched neuter at another animal hospital. Dr. Kerpsack worked on him and repaired the severed ureter and urethra and assured us with confidence that are dog would recover. Dr. Newple and the rest of the staff were kind and courteous, as well as sincere. We recieved much appreciated daily updates on our dog's two week recovery at their hospital, and can't thank them enough! Pros: great surgeon, professional , knowledgeable more

A Godsend 6/23/2002

I am so impressed with and grateful for this particular animal hospital. One of my pets, Spot, has been struggling with a condition that no one seemed to know how to treat or cure. Dr. Kerpsack's year and a half commitment to helping Spot has been extraordinary and well above the call of duty. Happily, and because of Dr. Kerspack, Spot is getting better. I wouldn't take my pets anywhere else for surgical care in Austin. Thank you to the staff of Central Texas Veterinary Hospital. more
