Some nature in the city. 5/21/2006

Since this zoo was redone a few years ago it's become a great destination. While small, its central location in the park makes it a great part of a bigger day that can include the park or a stop in FAO Schwartz. It's charming for kids and adults alike, and in the summer the zoo has lots of educational programs -- some free, some at an additional cost -- for kids. It's a great bit of nature in the middle of the city. more

Central Park Zoo -- a little zoo in the middle of the big park!! 9/3/2005

We've been to Central Park Zoo many times. While not the largest zoo in the country -- that is one of the reasons we enjoy it. You can get through the whole thing in a couple hours. The price of admission is still very reasonable. The zoo is surrounded by Central Park -- so bring a picnic lunch with you!! Our favorite spots are the penquin house (in the NYC summer, this is called the "coolest place" in the city!!) and of course the polar bears. You don't have to have kids to go to the zoo either -- my husband and I enjoy it quite often!! more

The best place for kids 8/20/2005

Break up a day with a visit to the Central Park Zoo--a completely human-sized experience which kids will love. The penguin area is one of the best exhibits anywhere, and the petting zoo is a big favorite. Free with Bronx Zoo/NY Aquarium membership, otherwise very affordable. Open every day of the year! more

Nice for Kids 8/20/2005

If you are in the City with kids and don't want to make the trek or don't have the time to go to the far superior Bronx Zoo, this is a wonderful kid friendly alternative. This is not the same zoo I remember as a child but when the NY Zoological Society took over it became primarily a children's zoo. They have done a wonderful job. You can watch Gus, New York's favorite obsessive compulsive polar bear do his laps. From the zoo, venture out into Central Park or Fifth Ave. Enter by 68th Street and exit at 59th Street and venture over to FAO Schwarz to see the toys, (not as good as they used to be.) more

Central Park Zoo 8/17/2005

Great place to take children. $6 adult , $1 children price gets you into two zoos. The larger one has the seals in the center - when you enter, check out the feeding times for seals, polar bears & penguins. Also there are usually a few short kid friendly presentations about wildlife. My son was once chosen to be colorfully dressed as the best parts for each animal. Bring snacks and drinks - there is food service inside but it tends to be expensive - plenty of places to sit and eat and take a break - esp. around the seals. Humid and misty in the tropical forest exhibit but monkeys, snakes and bats are great to watch (notice the rats scurrying around the floor of the bat exhibit!). Penguin/puffin house is nice and cool on a hot summer day. You can sit here for a while and take a breather. Smaller Children's zoo has petting zoo. more

Great fun - small but it's got enough 8/16/2005

This is a great zoo to have right in the middle of New York City. It's somewhat small compared to other zoos but it's got a lot to offer and is great to take the kids without the hassle of going up to the Bronx zoo. My favorites are the polar bears and penguins. Cool birds too. There is a small children's zoo nearby that's worth it for the little ones. more
