A Cook's Dream 3/7/2006

I wouldn't have thought of writing a review about Central Market until my father came to town and just loved the place. He loves to cook and was enamored with the selection of food he found there. I'll admit that I was even impressed. You can find fresh fruits and veggies of every possible variety, an immaculate meat/seafood counter, wines, fresh-ground coffees, a bakery, candy counter, extensive deli, olive bar, and prepared food section. A little like Whole Foods, but on a larger scale. Go hungry because they often have lots of samples to try. A trip to Central Market will run you a few more bucks than your typical Kroger trip, and you won't find generic things like Coca-Cola or paper products, but the food is fantastic. My father made 3 trips during his five day visit! I can't complain because one night he made Chicken Cacciatore and roasted purple Peruvian potatoes. more

Central Market: the Place of Many Foods! 8/20/2005

This store continues to grow on me. One walks in to find the produce section on their left and everything else on their right. The ability to put a little sticker (price tag) on the food that you want is exciting. They have a great selection and wonderful samples. The wine gallery is quite extensive also, spanning from the USA to Croatia. Their bulk department is also flowing with abundance. more

A foodie's dream 8/10/2005

When I first moved to Houston from Chicago, I was very worried about where I would get my food from. There are no Trader's Joes, Whole Food's is over-priced and overrated and obviously none of my local favorites would be present. But then I found a H-town local favorite - Central Market. It's owned by the Texan supermarket chain HEB but it's like no other grocery store out there. The huge produce section has every vegetable you could ever want and them some. It's also very spacious and set up almost like a farmer's market or something along those lines. They have an extensive bulk section that includes everything from nuts to pastas to honey to coffee to spices and even almond and cashew butters. They also have a great cheese section with every imaginable cheese under the sun. The staff is friendly, the decor is a mish mash of bohemian, industrial and Provencal, and it is always packed so be warned. The best times to go are during the week either in the morning or late evening because it's bound to be packed any other time. The only downside to this store is that they CAN be a little pricey on certain things such as dish soap or toliet paper. If you buy your basics somewhere else, it's great for supplemental shopping. more
