Best

The restaraunt food was great and I am planning to go again. Pros: Good location Cons: Needs alittle remodeling

Worst

This is the place to go if you have to pick up the check for Aunt Doris, etc., not for great food! Pros: cheap, family-style Cons: too noisy, mediocre food

Mamma Mia!!! 7/17/2002

I loved Carmines, loved the generous portions, the service and the low prices for such a nice restaurant. The food was great. The only thing I don't like is not being able to make reservations unless I have a big group with me. Pros: great food, huge portions, good service Cons: long wait more

I've been there three times and ordered three different entrees and have not yet been disappointed! Everything is great!! HUge portions..Family style makes it very affordable! Am going back in August. Pros: Food, Ambiance Cons: Crowded more

not very impressed 6/22/2002

I had heard good things about Carmine's but was dissappointed. First of all no menus except on the wall, not a big deal but I don't see very well so it was annoying. The food was ok, nothing special at all. The portions were very big for appetizers (calimari and fried zucchini) but average for the entrees (chicken marsala, spaghetti w/ meatballs) and very expensive of course. I think it was $40 or $50 for a steak also. No real atmosphere to speak of, just a noisy crowded resturaunt. Service was ok, the place just seemed like a step down from a great steak house and not worth it's cost. Cons: overpriced, noisy more

Crowded but worth it 6/3/2002

This is a great place for a large group -- but if you can't take the crowds / long wait check out Mangia e Bevi. Great on an expense account, though. Pros: food, drinks Cons: wait, service, tourists more

Editorial
  • This traditional Italian restaurant near Times Square is on every tourist's to-do list. Decorated with spotlighted portraits and black-and-white photographs, the massive main dining room holds multitudes--but you'll still line up for an hour or more without a reservation. Large groups here for a celebration will love the raucous atmosphere; those in search of quiet conversation will hate it. Despite the hubbub, service is cheerful and efficient. Count on going home with a doggy bag: The enormous portions are sized for three to four people, which makes for great value but much negotiation, especially if you're a couple. All the garlic-saturated dishes come on strong with robust flavors. Rich sauces make pastas a good bet, but chicken marsala and salmon special are middle-of-the-road and veal is rather ropey. After all the heat, strawberry shortcake with whipped cream makes for a cool, refreshing dessert.
