Best

The restaraunt food was great and I am planning to go again. Pros: Good location Cons: Needs alittle remodeling

Worst

This is the place to go if you have to pick up the check for Aunt Doris, etc., not for great food! Pros: cheap, family-style Cons: too noisy, mediocre food

great time 1/6/2011

love this place. I go there for all my family occassions. its a little crowded sometimes, but totally worth the wait. more

There was a bug in the salad!! 7/2/2010

While I was eating salad, I felt that I bit something hard. It was a locust. Really terrible moment!! Found a bug in my mouse. That means they didn't wash the vegetables. And when I called the manager, he asked me to bring a new salad. But I rejected because I didn't want to even think about the salad anymore. The manager apologized, but not seriously. I fact after that the manager was continually watching my table. It seemed to me that he was doubtful about the bug thing. And the service was terrible. They didn't even bring the bread till I asked. The waiters almost threw the dishes on the table. I wanted to leave right after bug thing, but I couldn't because I invited my closest friends. They ruined my pleasant evening with my friends. And I had to pay fully except the salad. more

Fantastic 2/14/2010

One of the Best!!!! 1/26/2010

I discovered this restaurant several years ago and even though I don't live in NYC I visit every time I come back the Bid Apple. The service is top notch, and the food is always consistently phenomenal! The portions are enormous (Bucca Style) and the prices are resonable for the portions you get. Love Carmine's Pros: Scarapiello Chicken or Wings!! Everything is great! Cons: Dinner you will need reservations well in advance more

Touristy in A Good Way 12/20/2009

Fun atmosphere, for the price the food is great. Huge portions, great for families, not for a romantic evening on the town. I'm a big foodie and I really like a big ;ol plate of spaghetti, they do it really well. Pros: If you order family style it is very reasonable more

Pretty cool spot! 7/29/2009

We ate here a few years ago and really enjoyed it. It really lets you see what the NY city life is all about. Food wasn't amazing but good. Wine was very tasty! Check it out sometime. Pros: Great atmosphere Cons: Not a great place to bring your kids! more

Not as great as led to believe.... 6/25/2009

The waitress was not able to communicate the way the menu worked. In other words, instead of elaborating on that the menu selections were "family style" - enough for the whole table, we were led to believe that we could order individual portions. Therefore, when we ordered Sea Bass, we were unaware that it was enough for the whole table @ $48.50 a dish, and proceeded to order five other entrees. Needless to say, a lot of waste of food and dollars. Will not be back....... Cons: incompetent waitress - not knowing how to explain menu more

One of my NYC favorites... 4/26/2009

Considering all the tourist traps and franchise-type restaurants in Times Sq, it's good for New Yorkers to have a really good Italian restaurant right in the heart of it all. Been here a bunch of times and the food's always been top-notch. I mean, sure it's not the best Italian in the world like when we go to Batali's Babbo, but all the dishes we've ever tried are excellent and the serving sizes are absolutely huge (family-portion or larger!). If you order an appetizer, it's going to be for like 3 or 4 people, no joke. I have a huge appetite, and I always bring home a doggy bag. My faves are the calamari with sauce for appetitzer, and the shrimp diavlo for entree. The shrimp are huge, they must include 15-20 shrimps, and the sauce is perfect...spicy enough to enjoy, but not too hot. Everything else I've gotten has been either very good or great. We always go with other people. The only con might be the noise -its really loud in this place...so dont expect to go here on a romantic date, that would be a bad choice. The service we've gotten has been OK considering how big the place is, and its always packed. Prices are very affordable, absolutely make reservations ahead. Best times to go would be mid-afternoon on a weekend or about 8:00pm on a weekday after the theater crowd has already left to go to their shows. Bottomline...the food's delicious and they give you plenty and price isnt bad. Carmine's... big thumbs up! Pros: HUMONGOUS portions of delicious Italian food... Cons: Always noisy more

Good Price Late Seating 1/3/2009

We had a good meal with lots of food for the money. reservation was very slow-made for 4 people for 9:30 and didn't get seated until 10:30. It was the evening of black friday so we were understanding. The food was worth the wait. Will return again. Pros: food Cons: wait more

Decent Italian 7/28/2008

Decent Italian Food. Easy to order menu. The lasagna comes in a nice portion and the chicken marsala is tasty. Recommended for large groups. Pros: Convenient. Good for groups. Cons: Groups have to wait until the majority is there. more

Big Place, Big Tasting Food 5/23/2008

Carmines is a very good place right on the streets of New York City nice and pretty. If you want Italian food and pizza and all of that stuff go there. Pros: It has so many that I can't even say. Cons: None. more

VERY GOOD FOOD,A BIT CROWDED AT SHOW TIMES 4/20/2008

FOOD IS VERY GOOD,FAMILY STYLE. RESERVATIONS A MUST,IT IS THE THEATRE DISTRIC AND YOU CAN FORGET ABOUT WALK INS AT CERTAIN TIMES. Pros: VERY GOOD FOOD AND PORTIONS Cons: WALK INS CAN BE A VERY LONG WAIT more

Best marinara sauce and most generous portions in town 1/26/2008

In my kids' words: Mom, this is the best food I've ever had. The portions are truly "family size", four could eat from a single order. The place is very crowded but it's easy to understand why. The waiter was not as polite as he should have been, but, hey, it's NY and he was on the go. We are Italian food fans and, believe me, this was the very best in a looonnnggg time. Don't miss it! Pros: Food taste, portion size and prices. Cons: Very crowded and not the most polite waiter. more

Food is awesome but the service is fleeting 1/12/2008

I have gone to this restaurant on many occassions with my family and the food is aswesome. However, it can only be said that if you don't make reservations in advance you might have to wait for the titatic to arrive to get a table. Moreover, the staff is rude and pushy if you are a couple versus a group as they are so hungry for tips. If you are a couple at this 42nd street location expect to be ignored by your waiter who will be talking up a storm with larger groups. I sugguest to go uptown where the food is awesome and the service really rocks! Pros: If your a group this is the place to be but make reservations Cons: If your a couple stay away since your waiter will not attend you table equally. more

Big portions, delicious italian dishes, 2 thumbs up. 12/22/2007

Me and 3 others went to Carmine's the other night and had an amazing time. The food was served in huge portions. Top notch, amazing italian dishes! Probably one of my favorites outside of Little Italy of course. Carmine's is an excellent place to go for a group or family dinner. I'll definitely have to go back for more when i get another big group of people together and want some delicious italian food. Pros: You're guaranteed to get full and enjoy an amazing italian dish. Cons: This location can be a bit crowded... but it's still well worth the wait and they have plenty room to accommodate. more

Excellent food for the range 10/26/2007

Our experience was that the service was prompt and friendly. The food was excellent. The NY taxes were more painful than the cost of the food. Pros: The food was excellent as in tasty...and lots of it... Cons: The restaurant was noisy but heck this is NY...! more

Fantastic for HUNGRY groups out to celebrate - too much food to finish; too much noise for cross-table (from the groups, but now that's just how it is) 9/8/2007

my friend and i with the same birthday (but few mutual friends) had a joint dinner with friends at Carmine's midtown - we wanted to have enough food for everyone without any issue of overspending - excellent for that, we couldn't finish 2 appetizers+2 entrees between 8 people. no way to criticize that part in nyc. The servers were arrogant and tactless, but it was not worth being upset about when the whole theatre district is there. The only FLAW to keep in mind: surcharges for petty stuff like extra marinara are everywhere, and it's a surprise on the bill - obviously it would be unpleasant to ask about an extra charge every time someone wants sauce or bread, so that's your call.Everything, Without Question or Saying so, CHARGED for!! A friend brought a cake for us - we said we'd eat it at home and they happily insisted that we celebrate there. we said how many slices, but they sliced the whole thing, and hadn't even let us know that we'd be charged per slice. Corking fee is standard of course, but pushing a service without mentioning service charge upfront...and refusing to just bring forks or the bill- the cake she had already paid for ended up costing over $100 to eat. Crazy! Just eat their dessert or something. Note that it's 4 instead of 3 stars because at the end of the day it's hard to find a place to let loose in a big group, eat your fill, keep a reasonable cost (if you come empty handed ha), take kids, arrange accessibly from wherever everyone lives and get a late reservation or a big group just a few days before Pros: Huge portions, affordable wine, fun party atmosphere Cons: rude service, surcharges more

Huge portions but little else 8/12/2007

Huge portions and a carefully orchestrated Italian American feel keep the tourists comming back to this theater district hot-spot. The taste of the food leaves a lot to be desired though and you instantly realize that the Chef Boyardee people might have been here once or twice to compare recipes. It really does a good job on atmosphere and is great to bring picky family members to, as they are sure to find something they like. Pros: Ambiance, location, portions Cons: Marinara sauce (Chef Boyardee anyone?) more

Editorial

  • This traditional Italian restaurant near Times Square is on every tourist's to-do list. Decorated with spotlighted portraits and black-and-white photographs, the massive main dining room holds multitudes--but you'll still line up for an hour or more without a reservation. Large groups here for a celebration will love the raucous atmosphere; those in search of quiet conversation will hate it. Despite the hubbub, service is cheerful and efficient. Count on going home with a doggy bag: The enormous portions are sized for three to four people, which makes for great value but much negotiation, especially if you're a couple. All the garlic-saturated dishes come on strong with robust flavors. Rich sauces make pastas a good bet, but chicken marsala and salmon special are middle-of-the-road and veal is rather ropey. After all the heat, strawberry shortcake with whipped cream makes for a cool, refreshing dessert.
