Referred by a friend - I can see why! 1/12/2009

I brought an older VW I was thinking of buying to Carl's for a pre-purchase inspection. The service was so great, and Carl was VERY helpful and kind. They even did some things like changing a lightbulb that was burned out and didn't charge me for it. The best part is that Carl explained everything to me in detail and didn't treat me like a Dumb Girl - which many mechanics tend toward. He gave me some solid advice and I'm sticking with him since buying the car. I highly recommend this place! more

Carl is great!! 6/18/2007

I took my car in to Carl's (actually towed my car in to Carl's) and found I needed a new alternator. He searched for the best deal on the part and charged very reasonably for the service. I called a day later to describe another nuisance (my e-brake light kept turning on and off for no good reason) and he was able to fix it simply, for practically nothing, at the same time. He kept me informed the entire time my car was in the shop and my car has been running great for the six months since! Highly recommended. more

You just feel good... 5/29/2007

... about leaving your car. Carl's does all of my normal servicing (oil changes/lube) and any repairs that may come up. He and his team even found a very inventive way to fix a broken mounting bracket for the exhaust pipe. This free fix saved me the coupe hundred dollars it would have cost to replace this piece. In the past I used the 1hr lube places and I was constantly plagued by incomplete jobs, some times costing me more in repairs down the road, and pushy sales men trying to up-sale me on services that didn't need to be done. At Carl's I know the job is fair and complete when I pick up the car. In the past I was always suspicious when I would take my car into a shop and they found "extra" work. When Carl's calls to let me know about the repairs that need to be done, I don't think twice about giving them the OK. more

Carl is Great! 1/30/2007

I had Carl work on my wife's beat-up old car recently and it was a totally positive experience. He repaired the car inexpensively. He kept me apprised at all times and had an eye on keeping the costs low. I was VERY impressed. I'll be back. more

Carl's versus University VW 1/26/2007

Took our VW golf to University VW and then to Carl's. Both diagnosed the problems as (1) broken breather hose and pipe and (2) Throttel Adaptation at Limit. Compare for yourself: 1. University VW - Recommended (1) replacing broken breather hose and pipe and (2) Replacement of Throttle Body. Total Cost: $931.00 (on top of $100.00 diagnostic cost) 2. Carl's - Recommended (1) replacing broken breather hose and pipe and (2) Adapting throttel body with scanner. Total Cost: $131.24 I took the car to Carl's and it is working fine. Saved myself $800.00. And Carl was much more pleasant to deal with. more

The best shop in the state 11/2/2006

I come from two generations of shop owners back east and feel totally at home with Carl's. Excellent, prompt service for a great price. Carl is articulate, personable and totally honest (I know that's a concern for a lot of people). Despite having had free car repair my whole life until moving here, I don't resent having to pay Carl's bills - he's that good. more

Carl Rocks 7/12/2006

This guy helped me find a great deal on a set of wheels. He is honest and trustworthy. He is also friendly and just an all around cool dude! more

Carl is Cool 6/19/2006

I have been going to Carl's for 10 yrs now. He is always honest, clear and sincere. The 2 other mechanics working for him are great and they will gladly explain everything to you (if you are interested) and not talk down to you if car engines are not your thing. He can also make suggestions as to priorities if you are strapped for cash, and provides alternate solutions sometimes (like if you want to provide a part from a junk yard he will install it). Highly recommended. more

My Mechanic Since 1991 (? give or take ?) 12/8/2005

Agree with all the earlier posts. Carl talks straight to you, and actually listens when you describe what's going on. (Unlike the dealer service manager with the bored nods who listens impatiently then writes down two words on the service order.) You won't tell your friends that Carl is cheap--car repair still hurts--but you will tell your friends about him. He really watches your costs for both parts and labor, and is totally on the up-and-up. Also a really nice guy, and his dog (Sprocket) is a sweet thing. more

Carl's not Cool 10/19/2005

I hate to say this, because I really WANTED to love Carl. At first he was personable, and after moving back to Seattle I was looking for a good mechanic. But when I took my car in for minor work involving my headlights, he couldn't seem to have it done when he said he would. Worse, he got very agitated when I tried to press him for a time when it would be finished, and balked at when i called to say i might be 5-10 min to pick it up, after he kept me waiting for days. Then he called me back to say it wouldn't be done, as the door handle on my car had broken just as he was talking to me. I had to pay for that to be repaired, too, so I was out of a car for even longer. He seemed to be very manic, all "don't you worry, I'm gonna take care of this" one minute, and then next defensive and rude. I'd rather get my car repaired without having things broken in the process, and I can do without the emotional roller coaster, too. more

Honest mechanic! 8/17/2005

I highly recommend Carl's Foreign Car Service in the U-District. He's honest, does great work, and went to great lengths to make sure that I understood what work was NECESSARY on the car, and what work was SUGGESTED. He even gave us the used parts that were replaced so that we could see what the problem was. The only problem with Carl's is that it's not closer to our house, and his hours are short. But it's worth the wait (and the bus ride) to take your car to such an honest and fair mechanic. more

Carl's Foreign Car Service - Reasonably Priced Knowledgable Mechanic 8/16/2005

Carl does a fantastic job repairing small foreign cars. I have a recent vintage (2002) Mazda Protege5 and have taken my car to Carl for one problem and one scheduled maintenance visit. On both visits, Carl promised to return my car by a certain date and time and delivered on that promise. For the problem, diagnosis was made quickly and I was fully informed about my options and the cost. Carl's cost estimates were on target and actually ended up being a little high in one case as the labor did not take as long as he thought it would. Hard to believe, but this is a mechanic who charges less than he estimates! In addition, he keeps good records, so when I came in for routine maintenance several months after the problem, Carl was aware that parts that would normally be replaced during maintenance had been replaced earlier and did not work on them again (beyond checking to make sure they were still okay). Bottom line: Excellent mechanic at a fair price. more

Happy Car 7/28/2004

If you drive a foreign car and need any type of service, I would head to Carl's. They are really pleasant to interact with, they don't load on extra work you don't need, and they make your car happy (all this for not a ton of cash). They also have a cool dog and, believe it or not, they have good magazines in the shop if you have to wait. more
