This place has the best king crab legs in the los angeles area, bar none. The selection of side dishes leaves something to be desired, especially if you are not that fond of rice or potatoes. But the crab is king. The service is generally good, though you do have to wait sometimes. This is not a place to bring kids. It is too expensive and things are a little crowded inside. Besides I don't want to hear your kid screaming while I am spending $200 for dinner for two with wine. I eat here at least 4-5 times a year and have never had a bad food experience. My husband and I have gone to this restaurant at least 50 times in the last 25 years. One thing that has never changed is their exemplary customer service. To this date, they still great everyone by name as they take you to your table. They have some of the same servers that have been there for years. We've even seen a couple of professional athletes frequent this place. Yes, it is a popular spot to go and eat their delicious food. Reservations are highly recommended. However, from time to time, we have just stopped by on a Saturday night and never had to wait more than an hour for a table. Of course, besides all of that, what has brought us back to this wonderful restaurant time after time, is their great food. All their appetizers are delicious, the salad is fresh and light, the bread is to die for; always hot and warm, and their main courses are fantastic! My husband loves the huge king crab legs, and I love the shrimp scampi or the blackened salmon (excuse me while I wipe the drool from my mouth) I'm sure we'll continue to go back for all our special occasions for years to come. We arrived at Captain Jack's around 7:30 on a saturday for what we had intended to be a very pleasant evening. We were told there would be a 45 minute wait even though they didnt seem that busy but ended up waiting over 2 hours. We had to retreave our own drinks in the lounge before noticing there was actually a bar maid who was servicing the lounge. Once we were taken to our table (the last table nearest the handicapped bathroom) the server explained the menu and we were more than ready to taste the famous crab legs. Our food was served by a youngish, red headed guy who proceeded to spill crab juice on my pants offering no apology. The crab was just ok, the salad was disgusting, the scallops were under cooked, and the swordfish was simular to a hockey puck and to top it all off I ended up violently ill about an hour later. The atmosphere was not that hospitable as no one greeted us when we arrived however they gladly thanked us as we were leaving. I guess the OC is not used to minority patrons in their neighborhoods nor may they welcome a splash of color every now and again. I have been to Captain Jack's several times but last week we were there to celebrate my son's graduation and I have to say we were all very disappointed. We had the worse service ever and my steak was nothing to speak of, I would have rather gone to Black Angus or Dukes. Cons: Very slow service more

I have to tell you, I've been going to Cap'n Jacks for almost 20 years and have NEVER been disappointed. The food, atmosphere , and service are always no less than amazing. I've gone for casual mid-week meals, celebrations, and romantic dinners with each turning out to be great. Absolutely the best crab legs in O.C. and escargot that any fine french restaurant could take lesson from. Orange County might have some of the worst food in California. Captain Jack's is one of the few old school establishments that feels like it might actually have...dare I say it, CHARACTER. It's on the water, it's a bit grungy, it has a loyal local crowd, and the food is pretty good - it's not great by any stretch of the imagination, but it's tasty and there's a lot of it. The vibe is great and funky and they have live music in the lounge almost every night of the week. It's dark and has lots of nooks and crannies, fish tanks, and even has a dock for locals who cruise up by Duffy. We've lived in next door Huntington Beach for 4 years and go to CJ's probably three or four times a year. Even just for drinks it's a great haunt. Fleming's it's not, but for what it is - a funky old pub-style steakhouse on the water in just-as-funky-Sunset-Beach with good crab legs and prime rib - it's a fantastic place. And when you take into consideration just how un-funky Orange County is, with its strip mall personality, it's also a very rare find. Bring friends. Have fun. Share the prime rib - it's HUGE. Just got back from another 10 Star epicurian adventure. Most outstanding Prime Rib and Crab Legs anywhere. The staff was very attentive, service great. Even though I currently live in Arizona, I first ate at Captain Jack's 35 years ago when the price of their lobster dinner was about $10.00. I make a point of going to CJ's every time I'm in the Orange County area. The service is always top notch and the food incomparable. These 2 things make the small size of their restroom facilities and lack of parking tolerable. Just pretend you're on a boat. We have been coming to Jacks for 18 years. I have never had a bad server. I will tell you, you will have to wait for a table. It stands to reason that they cannot predict how long customers will sit and enjoy their meals. It's a great place to bring friends, laugh! The quality of the food is well worth it. This was our first time to Captain Jack's, and overall we probably will return for the AMAZING CRAB LEGS but maybe order them for take out. A few irritating things --parking was horrible! We had to park 2 blocks away and walk. We had reservations and were seated promptly, however it took 15 minutes to get a menu. My husband ordered iced tea-- it took 3 reminders over a span of about 20 minutes to finally get it (the waitress ""forgot"") The hot bread came, but with no butter as promised. Our waitress was inattentive & hard to track down when we needed her... When my husband I first started dating, he took me here. Coming from the valley, I was quite used to being pampered at restaurants as long as you were dressed in a cocktail dress & your date wears a coat. I walked in wearing jeans, tank top, & zip up boots. They treated me as if I was wearing a cocktail dress and heels! I think I fell in love with my husband because he felt that I was important enough to share this place with me. We've tried everything, even the escargot! Recommendations: steamed clams, bottle of Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio, baked potato, Prime rib with FRESH horseradish. They used to make a chocolate mousse cake and serve it with raspberry sauce but they discontinued it for chocolate/almond mousse cake. We always ask for the ""Wharf"" room. my husband took me here for my birthday and i loved it! it is a cozy restaurant with the most awesome alaskan crab legs! they are huge, fresh and sweet! dinner comes with fresh salad, hot fresh bread, and a side. the prime rib is about $31 and the crab legs were about $40. but well worth it for that special occassion. and the service was wonderful..very attentive staff. we made reservations on father's day..and didn't have to wait. so, i reccommed calling in for reservations. this is a must go! i will definitely be back to try the prime rib! more

I have been going to Captain Jack's for 15 years, the consistency of the house favorites; Alaskan King Crab & Prime Rib is nothing short of amazing!!! My wife and I have invited many family and friends to share one of our favorite restaurants and always have rave reviews. The waiters, many who have been there it seems like forever, are always friendly and willing to go the extra mile to make our experience outstanding.
