Mediocre and Expensive! 11/8/2010

This is located in the Galleria area. Having frequented the area it looked like a neat place to try, and when we looked it up on our phone, it was tagged with ""vegetarian"" so we headed there. The chips + salsa are awesome. Our waiter was nice but made a few mistakes. The chef sent out free white chocolate pecan tamales which were good but super sweet, they made my teeth hurt. Other than that, all over our food was extremely bathed in butter. I try to eat healthy and this wasn't what I expected. In fact my stomach didn't feel normal for 2 days. On the other hand, the cocktails were good. I enjoyed a margarita on the rocks with cranberry and prickly pear juice, it wasn't strong but that didn't bother me. We won't be back unless it's just for drinks! more

NEVER ... ever... Again 3/16/2010

So, first time I go to this Place... My first thought is Yum... since I moved to Houston I have always wanted to visit this place... So, as we come upstairs we are greeted by this very unprofessional, raggedly staff... we are seated outside, the weather was perfect! But the ambiance was very disappointing (tables were dirty, chairs were everywhere, and well it just didn?t look right)? The waiter that came to attend us seemed to be very nice? as a matter of fact he was very courteous? so our first appetizer arrived; I only have one word YUCK! Their Sonoma spring rolls had a hateful taste? Our second appetizer came and well to have asked for Carne Con Queso I kept wondering where was the ?Carne?? So my companion?s plate arrived he had requested the Tequila Trout Dinner Special? OMG tasteless fish, how can you mess up a fried fish??? The rice was disgusting, and the presentation said it all? My plate arrived I decided to go for simple Tex-Mex Beef Fajitas and well? I swear it tasted like 100% Worcestershire sauce? the Tortillas were RAW and guacamole wasn?t green it was brown ,the rice was so not appetizing, and the beans? I couldn?t find them? So? I kept wondering what was good in this restaurant? As our waiter noticed our discomfort he sent the manager to our table who was kind enough to apologize and remove all the charges from our check? I would NOT try this place again? the only way you can ENJOY this food is after you have drank 2 pitchers of their so famous Margaritas! Cons: Horrible Food, Horrible customer service... more

Ick 1/1/2010

Nice to be able to eat outside if the weather is cool enough. Inconsistent waitstaff-some are horrible-some really care and provide a good experience. Food is NOT good. I don't think it is prepared here. Maybe it comes frozen or something. Margaritas are decent, but kinda expensive. Parking can be a hassle. Pros: Good Margaritas Cons: Bad Food more

one of my favorite restaurant for years 12/31/2009

Ive gone to Canyon Cafe a dozen times and have always left 100% satisfied. The service is always wonderful and enjoy the rustic and woodsy environment. I love their food, its spicy, zesty and authentic. Their chips and white chocolate after dinner sticks are things I always look forward to when Im there. I like that their food is influenced by a native american flair as well. Their prices are affordable and they give generous portions. Pros: great service, the best tortilla chips EVER, and tasty food Cons: only one in the city more

Made me sick with Scombroid!! 5/2/2009

I had the tuna and it was delicious. About an hour after I left I got nausea and my face and chest were splotchy red. I then started having trouble breathing, so I went to my doctor. Turns out I had scombroid po isoning, AKA histamine poisoing. When certain fish, including tuna, are not kept at under 40 degrees F, they are susceptible to a natural process that makes them dangerous to eat. So basically, someone left this fish out and then cooked it (even cooking fully does not get rid of this). When I called to restaurant to let them know (they should throw away their tuna) the manager said, ""Oh yes, I have heard of that before. Someone else got sick not very long ago"". I regret not reporting them to Health and Human Services, because other people have probably gotten sick. Pros: Food was good. Cons: Dirty more

The best experience 5/15/2008

Intriguing entrance. Warm atmosphere. Exceptional food. Exceptional service. Our waiter (Matthew) provided the best service above and beyond the norm. I was with an out of town guest and was very proud to have your restaurant leave such a favorable impression. Not only will I be back, I will recommend you to as many as I can. Thank you very much. Pros: Excellent service, food, atmosphere more

Fast service, but food and drinks not worth your time 2/16/2008

The atmosphere here is interesting, a little less rusticity and a bit more sophistication would make it even better. Pros: Fast Service Cons: Food, Margaritas, Value more

Fast lunch! 12/3/2007

I went there with a co-worker for lunch. We were greeted and seated quickly. Nice, cozy, casual atmosphere. Food was good, but portion sizes are on the small side (co-worker had fajitas and got 5 pieces of meat). Fast, friendly service. Entire lunch only took 30 minutes! Pros: fast, attentive service Cons: small portions more

Great food, great customer service 9/14/2007

We had our son's rehearsal dinner here and they did an outstanding job. Christina, the event planner was very helpful and gave great customer service. Oliver is a great waiter, always ask for him. The room was decorated nicely with their menus printed with their names and date on it. Everyone was having a great time, it was hard for us to get them to go home. Pros: Great service and food at good prices Cons: non more

Great margarita 11/18/2006

The food is good but we go here to sit on the patio and drink margaritas. I do miss the breadsticks that use to be served. more

New Favorite 11/29/2005

I've been here a few times now and it's been great everytime. Friendly service, great location right next to the galeria, good food and the margaritas are great! I recommend the Blackened chicken avacado salad. All in all a great experience! One of my new favorite places in Houston. Pros: Food, Margaritas, service more

Now I understand the 2 Margarita limit! 7/27/2005

This is an excellent dinner and date spot. The service was nice and the atmosphere was comfortable yet upscale. The chips far exceed any I've ever had at a Mexican food restaurant...a mix of blue and yellow corn chips, apple chips, and a crispy sweet n spicy chip. YUM! It made me excited to open up the menu! The menu was eclectic, but I would have liked to see some more healthier options. The calamari was the BEST I've ever had with the tasty cornmeal coating and spiced up dip. They cooked my tuna exactly to order and that's something that I have found is very hard to come by. The banana taco dessert was good, but I wouldn't get it again. They have an interesting array of margaritas. The 2 I had were GREAT and packed quite a punch! This is a new Galleria area favorite of mine. more

Love the healthy, light dishes 3/6/2005

Even though the food is a little different than what you would get at most places (chicken picata? picata I thought meant butter sauce and capers), if you keep an open mind and accept that the cooking style may be different than the other same old places then you would love this food. The food has a light and healthy feel. Not too heavy with tons of sauce or salt that take away the flavor. I am addicted to the Baja shrimp tacos with pumpkin seeds and Cole slaw. Pricing on the average is not super cheap but nowhere near expensive. Nice to large sized portions (not too big) might give you a nice lunch the next day unless you totally pig out (in my case). Did I forget the chips and salsa, or the sweet white chocolate tamale wraps that are complimentary! more

Nothing Special Here 11/15/2004

Everything was just average at this place, except for the drinks, which were pretty good. I also wasn't a fan of their seasoned chips. There are alot of places I would go before here. I doubt i'll return. more

did i just...burned my mouth? 10/5/2004

I was very disapointed with Cayon Cafe. The prices were high, the food was bland and the service could be much better. Our entrees came out at different times and the waiter decided that my friend needed a shower so he poured all the water on top of her!!!! what a disaster, i had better expectation since it is located right in front of the galleria. I had always heard good things about this place, or maybe i went in a bad day. there is something i must admit, the decorations are very nice, the restaurant was clean and the batrooms some of the best i've seen. Pros: clean, classy, nice Cons: , slow service, too spicy more

Absolutely Amazing 7/19/2004

I simply love this place! I have introduced several friends to this restaurant, an we have never been disappointed. The top shelf margaritas are potent (limit 2), complimentary appetizers are fabulous (but I do miss the bread sticks w/ chile flavored cream cheese, that stuff was addictive) and always changing. Luckily, the complimentary dessert (if you don't try their divine cheese cake) of white chocolate w/ pecans wrapped up to resemble a tamale is sooo good!~ Pros: Fabulous service, Good parking, Great food more

So good!!! 7/3/2004

We went last night and had GREAT food and good service. Southwestern food- not Mexican food. No breadsticks- as mentioned in other reviews- but great assorted tortilla chips, apple chips. There was a cinnamon, sugar. chili powder tortilla chip that was to die for. The salsa was chili powder spiced. I had the Black and Bleu Quesadillas- wonderful. My husband had the Tuna- good- and very good with the addition of my chipotle mayo I had put on the side. We weren't in a margarita mood- so we'll try those next time. Pros: food, ambience, service more

My Favorite 1/5/2004

This is one of the best restaurants in town. I have never had a bad meal here. Relatively quiet, excellent and fun atmosphere, complimentary breadsticks, and absolutely delicious food. I usually get the chicken fried steak which is huge and deliciously flavored with southwestern spices over awesome mashed potatoes. My husband loves the homestyle meatloaf, which is also huge. They have these ""banana burritos"" drizzled in chocolate and caramel that you must try for dessert. You can't go wrong here. Pros: Delicious, Location, Ambience more

so gooood! 9/12/2003

my server was brian sinclair. he was a true colorado boy, that knew his stuff! my wife was so taken with him, that she told him that she would take him home for dessert! i was jealous. anyway, the food was good, the service was excellent, and my me cago dessert was delightfull. thanks again, gary robles Pros: service, food, drinks! Cons: few women servers more

All around great 8/14/2003

I love this place. My fiance and I come here often. We both get the chicken fried steak. It comes with a jalapeno cream gravy that is delicious, and their tortilla soup is a must try. I can hardly wait to come here again. more
