Best

I've lived in Chelsea for quite a while now and am ashamed to say it's taken me over a year to check out this spot. I guess I just wasn't expecting too much from what looked like ...

Went there last night with some friends who had all been there before. The food was decent--yes, the mac and cheese is really that good--but the waitstaff couldn't have been wors...

Cafeteria 9/27/2006

This Chelsea eatery has been featured in Sex & the City and has that general "cool people" feel to it. A friend had her birthday dinner there recently and I got to check it out first hand. On a nice night, the patio opens right into the restaurant so you can step into the place from the street. The decor is very modern and low-lit, with tea lights illuminating our table. All our food was delicious! I had an apple/green beans/blue cheese and other veggies salad along with mac & cheese. It was sooo good and creamy! I've tried mac & cheese at so many restaurants in the city and this place is in my top 10. One friend had a crab cake burger, another meatloaf and another the veggie burger. Everyone had only positive things to say about their dinners. The only negative part was that the last entrée came out about 15 min after the rest of them. There was clearly some miscommunication in the kitchen which our waiter tried to waive off as "it's coming right out," but we were nearly done with our meals once the final entrée came out. We expressed our dissatisfaction and it was removed from the bill, so not such a negative after all. It definitely has a "too cool" feel to it, but its not so expensive (my dinner was about $16 before tax/tip). more

Really loud and perfectly adequate 5/16/2006

Cafeteria is loud. It is also filled with people who think they are cooler than they are. That said, the food is also prety good and the location is ridiculously convenient to all sorts of places. While they'll try to be accomodating to large groups (generally in teh downstairs, which can feel really isolated from the restaurant), you shoudl be warned that they're not really good at this -- 10 people you can get away with, more than that (and believe me, I've tried) will be a hassle. Luckily it's so loud and crowded in their anyway, the staff certainly never gets annoyed when you add to it. No need to go out of your way for this place, but it's a good meeting point prior to attending other activities in their neighborhood. The food is basic bistro fare and comfort food. more

Can't go wrong 9/20/2005

I remember the first time I went to Cafeteria, about 9 or 10 years ago and though it was just the hippest, coolest place I had ever been and that I was just lucky to be there. Of course, I was right. Boy have times changed. I may not have gotten cooler but this neighborhood has blown the roof off. Now, Cafeteria is like an old standby where the food is always the same, if not great, very good. And perhaps the coolification and proliferation of all night comfort food for the club kids spots have opened around the neighborhood (ie Diner 24, the Diner), Cafeteria has been humbled into being just a good place to enjoy a fun dinner with friends, which these days is almost a novel idea. more

Cafeteria Food and Setting 8/11/2005

For those who love cafeteria food and want to go back to the cafeteria school days this is the place to be. This resturant was also featured in an episode of Sex and the City. It serves traditional cafeteria food such as mac and cheese, fried chicken with waffles and etc, but a way better version of school lunch. It is constantly seen with vibrant crowd located right in Chelsea that is open 24 hours. If you're lucky you may even spot a star or two. more
