Cafe Italia

I live about 3 blocks from this place and it took me 4 years to finally eat there. (No special reason). We were seated promply and close to the bar. Chubby little waitress was pleasant and polite. Food was terrible, 2 of the plates were spaghetti with meat sauce. The meat sauce was scorched and had, I'm sure, left-over meat mixed in with it, Chunks of sausage that tasted OLD. Spaghetti was watered down. Portions were oversized and no-one bothered to asked to bag the leftovers. I can only guess where this meat went. more

Food is really good. Been going there since 1998. Big portions. Good food. "Italian butter" is really good. Call ahead if you want to eat lunch there to make sure they are open. Very full on prom nights, etc. Service quicker if you are seated upstairs instead of downstairs. Being out-of-staters....we happened across this restaurant and were THRILLED to see a "authentic Italian eatery"!! Having visited Italy, and enjoy good italian food....we were happy to stop in....but wished we had not. I have absolutely no doubts the food was fresh, and of good quality....but I don't know which part of Italy this style of cooking comes from, but none that I have tried. The food we tried was so unusual and tasted so "funky" (for lack of better terms)....we couldn't eat our dinners. If you are unfamiliar with real Italian food or like your basic Italian foods with a twist, by all means try this place. But if you are looking for real authentic italian food - go elsewhere. One of the finest restaurants in KC. We have been dining here since they opened 15 years ago and have never had a bad experience. Everything prepared to order, fresh daily, even the bread. The quality of the food and the portions are second to none, the service and atmosphere are way above what you would expect from a restaurant in this price category. Even the appetizers are huge. Everything in this restaurant is made fresh daily, even the Italian bread. I asked for Gnocci, a dumpling popular in southern Italian cooking, even though this was not a menu item, and he told me that this would be no problem (Very impressive). The gnocci was fabulous. Also, all the meals include a fresh made soup, salad, fresh baked Italian bread, (served with olive oil and pecorino cheese), and the meat entrees also include a side of pasta. For an average menu price about $15.00 this is an unbelievable value. Other notable items are the steaks. Their deserts are to die for. Kudos Cafe Italia, you have won a place in my heart. 4 of us, took over an hour to be seated (told it would be 20 minutes about 3 times). Was seated, after 15 minutes had to ask for a waiter, so we could order 4 waters. The cheese was put on our plates, but no one brought the bread until we asked about 8 minutes later. Then ordered when the bread arrived, took 65 minutes to get our food (cold), no explaination on why it took so long, only excuses from the waiter (he was kind), The Manager didn't provide any assistance or info towards our $60.00 tab. My favorite Northland Italian Restaurant, and there are some good ones. Service is good, location is good, food is awesome, from beginning to end. A little pricey, but well worth it. more

Took us an hour from the time we got our table to get our food which was cold. The waiter made no attempt to rectify and atone. NEVER AGAIN! more

I took my wife here for the first time for her birthday. The atmosphere reminded me of a comfortable, warm setting where you can relax and enjoy great Italian cuisine. The food is excellent, the wine is fine (we had the Sangria), and the service was wonderful. And by the way, grandma's homemade bread is to die for!! By far one of my favorite's in KC.
