Go to 4th Avenue Bento and eat delicious salmon for $5.95. Spruce it up with a piece of onion, garlic and a few potatoes and pay $16 here. If you don't mind paying a high premium...

One of wife's favorite burgers in 5/26/2013

One of wife's favorite burgers in town... Keeps talking about wanting to go back! more

Minimalist Sensibility 5/3/2011

Spare in menu (food), interaction (service) and atmosphere (interior design), Café Castagna is an ideal place for dining out, one-on-one, with a loved one. This may sound like a case of damning by faint praise, but it’s not. There’s a quiet confidence in this establishment’s minimalist sensibility. If this restaurant were a personality, it would most certainly be European. Clean and simple, with honest and simple food. more

Great Food 5/11/2010

We love the food here and would go even more often than we do if it was not for the acoustics. During warm weather they have a great seating area outside so you can avoid the noise. The Ceasar salad is great, but nothing can beat the butter lettuce salad. Good french fries. Pros: The best butter lettuce salad ever Cons: Very Noisy more

Absolutely delicious 1/19/2009

We went to Cafe Castagna last night and were completely delighted. First off, the service was impeccable: prompt, informed, pleasant, and unobtrusive. The meal was superb! A standout was the braised beef angliotti recommended by our server. They were really sensational, and came in a beef broth reduction with chives and I'm guessing sherry. The fried risotto croquettes with fontina were delightful. We ordered cheeseburgers and fries based on their reputation for burgers and they did not disappoint. I think the fries were some of the best tasting fries I have had anywhere. The potato flavor was clear and earthy, the fries were properly cooked - light and crispy on the outside and creamy in the middle. The burgers were superb, and the addition of delicious house-made sweet pickles didn't hurt either. I can't wait to go back and try more items, the people here clearly have skill and obviously cook with love and pride. Pros: service, angliotti, burgers, fries more

Good food, mediocre service 6/18/2008

The food here is always excellent. I've been on a couple occasions... the burger is fantastic. The penne and cheese is a little overwhelming but good if you're looking for something rich, and the margarita pizza was delicious. However, the wait staff seems a little confused for the most part. My recent visit was not an overly busy night, yet service was slow (got drinks after appetizers) and a little schizo. We requested an outside patio table, but then they gave it to a different group that came in after us. Okay. Our server wasn't bad but the water-pourer/busser didn't seem to know what was happening. My friend and I asked for our meals boxed (half a pizza and half a penne meal) and she acknowledged and took them away, only never to return. Kind of inconsiderate considered I paid $14 for barely half a meal... I saw her later bussing tables but in the rush of things forgot to confront them about it. I don't feel like I should have to! Did she just take our whole meals and throw them away? I guess we weren't old and rich looking enough to be taken into consideration. I'd give it another try for the food...but maybe just one more. Pros: Food is great Cons: Whats up with the service?? more

Excellent Lunch Spot. 6/11/2008

Often heralded as a fine spot for dinner, the Cafe should not be overlooked for an exquisite lunch. I am a lunch time regular and find that the dynamic menu offers many options from delicious burgers, succulent pastrami sandwiches, house made sausages to local seafood. \r \r The outside patio allows for some truly fantastic dining (assuming Portland's weather cooperates!) and the classically attractive wait staff are patient, courteous and attentive. I have had numerous business lunches here and the staff always reads our needs. Food was timed well, space was made for our documents and we felt comfortable sitting and discussing long after our plates were cleared. \r \r I am hard pressed to think of a better lunch spot. Pros: Fantastic Lunch Items, Great Service Cons: Espresso drinks not very good more

Best Burgers in Portland 4/25/2008

Cafe Castagna consistently serves up one of the best burgers in Portland, and at a very reasonable price. The service is always very accommodating and it has a nice, minimalist atmosphere. Not too pretentious. The simplicity is what makes this place so great. Pros: Burgers Cons: Sometimes a long wait, but never too bad more

love the mac and cheese 11/19/2007

the penne and artisan cheeses is awesome! the burger seems awesome too (im a vegetarian). the room can be chilly; also we went with our baby and we were served really fast and they seemed like they were rushing us out of there. but other times (sans baby) we were allowed to linger and savor. more

Love it! 10/12/2007

Another one of my favorite spots when I want quality food and a relaxed atmosphere. Service is good, very unobtrusive and seamless. The menu is fairly simple but I am always more than happy and satisfied. The atmosphere is fine, very contemporary and simple. Sometimes there can be a wait, but once a table finally opens up and you get some food the wait was definitely worth it. Pros: Delicious, high-quality food. Cons: Bland atmosphere more

Love the Ceasar Salad 9/11/2007

I am a salad fanatic and I love Castagna"" (in the Cafe) Ceasar Salad. Their salad has a little bit of bite and a lot of garlic. The rest of their food is also pretty great! Pros: Great Ceasar, Hambuger and Pizza Cons: Noisy more

Ehh. 1/4/2007

The food was average, a little over-priced at best. The only thing ruining the experience are the acoustics. It was like sitting inside of a kettle with a few djembe players from the sidewalks of Hawthorne. Maybe the concrete walls should be covered with tapestry? Pros: cute space Cons: too loud! more

Solid choice. 7/21/2006

Went midweek. Bit of a drive to south-east, but it was worth it. We ordered two courses, and both were delicious, though timing seemed a little slow considering the number of other people in the dining room. Cocktails were nicely made, prices reasonable and service decent, if not very personable. It's not much of a destination, but if we lived in the neighborhood I expect we'd be in often. Pros: Excellent food Cons: Slightly chilly ambiance and service more

so many good things 7/7/2006

Castagna and cafe have been at the top of our list for years. We are reluctant to go to many places in town because of inconsistent food or service, but Castagna alwaysdelivers innovative yet classic dishes, and service is high quality for the price. The cafe gets the fine dining quaility of the restaurant at bistro prices. Wine list is one of the best in town. Keep up the good work! Pros: across the board quality Cons: too loud sometimes more

A favorite 1/9/2005

Great Service, even when the place is packed. Food has been consistantly excellent, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly without being overbearing. Wonderful creative cocktails too! Pros: Great Overall Value, Friendly Staff, Fabulous Food more

Best Deal In Town! 1/5/2004

A simple, if not austere, interior. Fantastic and attentive staff. The food is well prepared and the portions are reasonably generous. The best day to go is Sunday, as long as you don't mind the holdovers from the main restaurants weekend specials. You get the same meals they had in the more expensive restaurant in the cafe on Sunday at reduced prices. Didn't seem to be any problem with freshness. We had an incredible meal PLUS drink for under 30 dollars each. Great little place! more

Boo salmon, yeah burger 10/2/2003

Go to 4th Avenue Bento and eat delicious salmon for $5.95. Spruce it up with a piece of onion, garlic and a few potatoes and pay $16 here. If you don't mind paying a high premium for ""atmosphere"", than this isn't a bad place. The hamburger with blue cheese was wonderful, tops Higgins for best upscale burger. The Roasted Red Pepper soup was so-so. Their version of Pots du Creme was decent. The service is smiles, but far from above and beyond. Pros: hamburger Cons: price, service more

simple is better 1/29/2003

If you are in the mood for obnoxiously decorated, foo-foo cusine which is more for show than taste, do not venture into Cafe Castagna (unless you want a lesson in real food). If you are in the mood for amazingly fresh tastes, wonderfully concieved dishes and a zen like relaxed atmosphere you've found the right place. Cafe Castagna's roast chicken is right-on. Their burgers & fries are the best in town, by far! They have great apps and desserts too! Well worth the money and time spent here. I'll be back! Do yourself a favor and try this truly honest, simple and fresh bistro fare. Pros: very fresh food, great atmosphere, nice wines Cons: parking (sometimes) more

Great Burger 8/21/2002

Castagna has the best burgers and I might add fries in town..... Pros: Big, fresh, Great Cons: 10 burger more
