Great 5/9/2012

The only restarant we found that was open at 10:00. The service was good and the food was great more

Really good 5/2/2012

We loved the food! My hubby had chicken enchiladas, and I had enchiladas verde. Even the refried beans have a nice zip to them and the different sauces on the enchiladas were amazing. Watch out for the salsa, it is HOT! Really good though! Try to sit under the fans on the patio if possible, you get a better view. more

Worth a stop 4/26/2012

Nice riverwalk location, outdoor and indoor seating, best margaritas we found and went back several times. Ate some appetizers and would have hoped for better mexican in texas, but may have not gotten best selection. Worth a stop when you are there for sure more

DONT GO!!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU DO ONLY USE CASH 8/27/2011

My wife and son were walking around on the river walk and stumbled onto this place. The hostess was nice and quickly sat us, but that's where the good ends. The waitress took 10 min to even notice us, you couldn't call what we were served Mexican food it was more like dog food, but of course the check came quickly with a smile and have a nice day, i did not leave a tip. 2 days later I'm looking at my bank statement before it cleared the total was $25.93 but after it cleared the total was $30.93. The idiot thought she'd be cute and help herself to my money. Needless to say she is no longer employed at cafe ole. STAY AWAY plenty of other restaurants in the area. more

Terrible - Go Elsewhere 9/27/2010

Wow, it was a real mistake to go here! First they are VERY misleading in trying to draw people into their restaurant. They tell people they have a ""happy hour"" going on with $2.50 margaritas but it turns out you have to purchase an appetizer platter and two margaritas for $10 and they say that means those two margaritas are only $2.50. Sleazy marketing. But then we got the chips and salsa. Just about the worst salsa I've ever eaten (tasted like it was from a can bought at Walmart). We decided to not purchase that ""happy hour"" special which they said is also a smaller size margarita than their others and is lower grade tequila. We both bought margaritas, larger than the ""happy hour"" versions. They didn't really taste like they had any tequila. Mine was one of the larger size ones. Even after drinking the entire drink, I'd swear there was virtually NO tequila in it. So it appears I had a $12 limeade. Ironically their sign even features their fajitas and margaritas. We tried the fajitas. Overpriced, and you have to pay even more if you want to add guacamole or pico de gallo. Sadly, they were marginal. The whole experience was a disappointment and I felt their marketing ploy to lure us in was deceptive. You don't tell people you are having a happy hour with $2.50 margaritas if they can't really purchase a $2.50 margarita. That's called ""bait and switch"" which is unethical. Food was bad, margaritas were bad, service was ok. I felt cheated. I would never ever go there again. more

Eat Elsewhere 7/23/2010

The first time I went it was decent enough for Riverwalk fair (I live in San Antonio) so I figured taking out of town friends there wouldn't be bad. The food was bland, but the waitress was nice.My issue was that the hostess told us for our party of 9 that it would be 20 to 30 minutes. An hour later (with 4 children under 10) we were still waiting. I watched as group after group, including a group of 7, that arrived after us was seated. It wasn't until I demanded to see the manager that we were seated. At the end of the meal I asked again to speak with the manager. Finally he came to talk to me and the hostess who was aranging tables came with him. An insincere appology and a ton of excuses were all I got, including we don't give times till seating. Just go elsewhere, it isn't worth the price. Pros: pretty view if you are seated outside Cons: food, wait time, bad excuses more

You may as well throw your money in the river. 7/19/2008

My boyfriend at I ate here on a Saturday night. It was busy and the hostess said there would be a 20 minute wait. We were pleasantly surprised when they called our name about 5 minutes later. We were seated at our table at that is where any semblance of a pleasant dining experience ended. Our waiter brought our chips and salsa promptly, but took about 5 minutes to come take our drink orders. At this point, we were parched from eating the chips, which were incredibly greasy and looked as if they had been in the chip warmer overnight, and salsa, which tasted highly processed and mass-produced. The margaritas we ordered were decent, if you don't count the fact that they had no tequila in them. My boyfriend's was brought without a lime, and the waiter made no haste to bring him one after he requested it. The waiter never offered us waters with the margaritas, and it took another ten minutes to receive these upon requesting them. We ordered our food--my boyfriend ordered beef fajitas and I the beef crispy tacos. Upon receiving our food, I immediately noticed there was a crust forming on my refried beans and the rice resembled something you would make in the microwave. The cheese on the tacos was greasy and congealed. I was severely disappointed by the taco meat. It was soggy, too sweet ,and more like chili meat than taco meat. One bite of the rice confirmed my suspicions. It was luke warm and quite flavorless. The beans were equally bad and may have come from a can. The fajitas were slightly better than the tacos, though the tortillas were tough as though they had been microwaved to death as well. The meat was nothing remarkable and on the tough side. By this point, we were ready to leave. The waiter cleared our plates and failed to ask if we wanted our check. He then stood at the server's station, avoiding eye contact and then disappeared for about 5 minutes. Finally, he reappeared and brought our check. We paid and were set free. BY FAR THE WORST ""MEXICAN"" FOOD EVER! Pros: Location Cons: Everything else more

AWFUL - More like Cafe Oh-no! 7/13/2008

We ordered margaritas and fajitas. After dinner, we knew better than to order desert. The salsa was spineless and tasted of the tin can from whence it came. My husband?s chicken ?fajita? never saw a grill -- the meat was cooked either by boiling or irradiation, and reminded both of us of coach-class airplane food. It included none of the standard fajita veggies (peppers, etc) either, and no spice at all. My veggie ?fajita? was really a pile of ?California Mix? frozen veggies -- carrots, cauliflower, etc -- served in a watery soup of their own thawed-out freezer-burn on a fajita plate. Both ?fajitas? were a far, desperate cry from the marinated wonders described in the menu. I sent the veggie disaster back and ordered a (mediocre, but hard to ruin) cheese quesadilla instead. Cons: Terrible, terrible food. Surviving because of unsuspecting tourists only. more

Avoid this place! 4/6/2008

Lousy service! We waited an eternity for the check. Food was worst than the service, even though we just had natchoes. We won't be back! Pros: On the Riverwalk Cons: Bad Service & Food more

Worst Dining Experience EVER 7/16/2007

Took 10 min for a host to greet us. By the time our waitress came to our table, we knew what we wanted, so we placed our order: 2 waters, 1 margarita on the rocks, and fajitas for 2. We were hot, so we asked the waitress to please bring our waters immediately. We didn't get our water for 15 min. Meanwhile, there were several tables who had been seated after we got there, but had received their drinks and their chips and salsa. Finally our waters came out and the waitress' excuse was that she couldn't find any cups. It's amazing that none of the other waiters had any trouble. Then we received our margarita, but it was frozen, not on the rocks. So the waitress admitted fault, and got us a new one. We also had to request some chips at this point since she had never bothered to get us any. Now settled in, we worked on our margarita, snacked on our chips, which were stale, and waited for our food. About 45 min later, the tables who had been seated about 30 min after us had received their food. At this point, we saw our waitress look at our table and run back to the kitchen. She came back a few min later and told us she was getting our food for us and would speak to the manager about having our meal taken care of. Our fajitas were brought to us, but they had obviously been sitting under a heat lamp for a long time. They were completely unappetizing. We started eating because we were so hungry and after a few min the manager came out and apologized, explained that the kitchen had lost our ticket, and offered to take 10% off our ticket. 10%?! That was only $3!! This had been the WORST dining experience ever, and then the manager insulted us with such a terrible offer. We told her that based on our experience, we didn't expect to pay for the food at all. She then took our fajitas away from us. Needless to say, we paid for our margarita, and left immediately. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. It was, by far, the WORST dining experience we have ever had. Cons: SERVICE, SPACE, CLEANLINESS, FOOD more

NOT real Mexican food...disgusting 3/26/2007

This was by far the worst Mexican food I've ever ate. Actually I couldn't even finish it. I had to write this review because I'm from San Antonio and I thought ""why not let's give this place a try"" (even though I had been warned not to go there). Not only is it NOT authentic Mexican food the service was horrible. We asked for ""tortillas"" with our meal and our server told us to ""wait"" and he didn't bring them until we were almost leaving. To top this off there was an insect in my margarita. Our ""girls night out"" quickly turned into a ""night from hell"" thanks to Cafe Ole. I hope any visitors reading this will avoid that restraunt and try somewhere like Mexican Manhattan it's on the river and ther food is far more authentic this mockery Cafe Ole. Pros: It's on the beautiful Riverwalk Cons: Food, service, price more

Love it 11/28/2005

I loved cafe ole. I lived in San Antonio for two years and out of all the 20 sum mexican restraunts i tryed cafe ole was my favorite. The best thing on the menu in my opinion was the texas sized chimichanga. mmmmMMMMmmm Pros: Decent prices, Good food, great atmousphere Cons: Parking hard to find, crowded on weekends more

Great Drinks, So-So food 5/13/2005

The atmosphere and service is great at this Riverwalk restaurant. There were Mariachis the night we went & the drinks are great too, especially the Sangria wine. Big disappointment on the food though. Horrible tortillas. But my friend had the veggie fajitas and those were a hit. So unless you're going for those and a good drink, I'd go somewhere else. Pros: Drinks, Service, Atmosphere Cons: Tortillas, Parking, Long Wait more
