Took my visiting-from-out-of-town parents here for brunch today and had a wonderful time. Even though it took a while to be seated, the staff were very courteous and attentive. Food was delicious, but we were surprised that there wasn't more chocolate on the menu (plain pancakes, when we expected a chocolate or choco-chip option). Not many desserts were offered either. But going to the cafe and then staying for the factory tour made for a very pleasant afternoon. Recommended for out of town guests for sure - especially those who like chocolate. The tour was one of the more informative and interesting "factory" tours I've ever done. I believe you can make reservations for the cafe (which I would recommend) and for the tour as well (check sharffen berger website) - though we walked in for the tour and they accommodated us. more

I brought my chocolate-loving friend here for brunch, thinking this would be her dream cafe. Not so. The service was terrible, the food was average, and there was nothing terribbly compelling about the selection of chocolate desserts. Very disappointing. more

I was skeptical of this place, but once I got there all my fears were put to rest. The food is great, the people are friendly and it's a good place to go in Berkeley that doesn't get too crowded for brunch. There were a few issues with our meal, but the staff was ready and willing to fix it and make it better. I highly recommend this place as a chill spot to hang and eat some good food. more

I could not disagree more with the reviewer who said he had bad service at Cacao. The staff is friendly and delightful. The Manager Nikki (Mikki?) is great, really friendly as well. The food and overall experience has been improving...I know, I live nearby and check it out often. Also, their patio has been redone recently and looks pretty inviting! Started out in the gift shop. I was the only customer in the store, the cashier was busy re-arranging product on the shelves and didn't notice for 5 minutes that I was waiting for help. Had to ask her to come help me check out. Went to the restaurant and waited with a growing crowd at the front door to ask to get a table. Not one of the employees acknowledged we were waiting or helped us. Called a day ahead to try to get reservations for tour, was asked to leave name and phone number but no one ever called me back. Overall, poor customer experience. I love the chocolate. But I won't go to the restaurant again unless I hear service has improved. Pros: tasty chocolate Cons: horrible service more

Cafe Cacao is hidden on Heinz and 7th....might be hard to find, but it can be great. They have changed the menu recently for the better, and the entire place has a more friendly feel to it. As a matter of fact, every employee seems to be smiling and having a good time at work. I hear they have a new Chef, and you can tell! Wish they had a full bar, though....it would be gret to get a cocktail in this part of town.... Pros: Menu is great!, Staff is nice!, Cool people! After 3 calls over two days trying to make reservations, I was finally able to reach someone who "could access the reservation computer". We were seated promptly at a table in a very narrow high traffic area though a table was available in a better space. The restaurant was maybe half-full at this time. We waited 15 minutes and saw the wait staff standing around chatting with the hostess...mind you they were standing 3 feet from us. I finally asked the hostess if she could have our waitress come to the table. 10 minutes later I approached the manager, finally our waitress appeared and apologized. She was very pleasant throughout the meal. The food was fine, the chocolate milk looked like beige milk and did not taste of chocolate. The hot cocoa was excellent as were the homemade chips. I like this place a lot. I try to make it over there every time I visit Berkeley. I mainly go for lunch, and I strongly suggest the tuna, the pork loins, or the burger. All are very good. I really enjoy sitting out on their beautiful patio on nice days. Last but certainly not least...the dessert! Oh the dessert. Everything and I mean everything on the dessert menu is well worth it. A group of us went here after taking the chocolate factory tour there. While the tour was excellent, the hostess at the cafe was incrdibly rude to us. There were about 7 of us and she said they could not accomidate us (there were plenty of tables) and that we could order from the counter, and sit outside, but not off the regular menu! She was VERY rude in her dispostion to us and we decided to leave and go somewhere else. Pros: none Cons: rude service more

I have never been treated more rudely than at Cafe Cacao. The girl at the front desk saw us walk up and did not acknowledge our presence for a full 2 mins. When she did, she addressed us in the rudest tone I've ever heard in the service industry to tell us we "couldn't be helped" unless we were "willing to wait at least 45 mins." Others were ordering food at the pastry bar, and when we did the same, she actually raised her voice at us. The girl taking our order at the bar actually gave us free a piece of cake as apology, and said she was sorry three different times. The food is average, but the dessert we had was divine - order it to go. I've never blatantly said I won't go to a restaurant again, but I WILL NEVER STEP FOOT IN THIS ESTABLISHMENT AGAIN. This place has so much potential, unfortunately it is lost on an extremely slow wait and kitchen staff. Both times I have eaten here it took over AN HOUR just to get our food (40 minutes just to get the salad), and the restaurant wasn't even fully seated.
