Cafe Allegro

I don't know who that previous snob thinks she is, but there are 3 places to eat on Main Street that I frequent! We were recently at Cafe Allegro and the food was excellent. My normally fidgety four-year-old was happy and patient due to the fact she could color on the butcher paper covered table. We both had fun drawing! I have been there for wedding rehearsal dinners, after work with friends, with the family, and alone quietly with my husband. Cafe Allegro has good food and good prices for any occasion. Never again will we be enticed to try a restaurant by a 2 for 1 coupon. The menu lacked most of the classic Italian entrees and was unimaginative. The service was astonishingly slow. The food was bland. The final disappointment was the bill; overpriced. No we didn't have dessert, just show us the door. What can you expect for downtown Tigard. My husband and I had dinner here recently and we left very disappointed. The mozzarella sticks appetizer was served cold in the middle and the lasagna was bascially a big bowl of cheese. We have always loved their lasagna (all 3 of us had the same thing!) and we have no idea why they changed the recipe. The coconut cake was fabulous as usual, but it did not make-up for the rest of the food. At least the service was excellent. This is by far the best italian place my wife and I have been to in Portland. I'll settle for cafe allegro when I can't drive to Abruzzio in Hood River. Allegro has the best Lasagna I have ever tasted. The portions are actually quite filling, and with the entertainment card, the price is right. At first we had to wait a long time for a mid-week table when plenty were open. I always realize the wait staff can help only so many, but it is frustraiting. Once we got seated the very helpful host assisted the wait staff on several occasions. Well done on his part. The food: good. My fiancee loved the cajun chicken salad, and the fresh baked break was very good. I had the chicken/artichoke pasta dish which was ok. Too bland, just no flavor. But the portion was huge. I think the menu is hit and miss, but you won't get anything bad. Bland, may be but not bad. They were working hard and I give them credit for holding it together for being unexpectedly packed. We'll go again, but not because it is the best. It is close, they were friendly and the food is reasonable price. more
