CITY HAIR

Ive had nothing but fantastic cuts, and color at City Hair. The staff has gone out of their way to make the experience mellow, and cheerful. I think the prices here are outlandishly cheap for the service you get. I use the Alterna Caviar that they've recommended to me and cannot believe the condition of my hair and scalp! They are always running deals on the Caviar every few months and if you ask they will call you when it's on sale. more

I've been going to City Hair for several years because of another stylist who has since left. I then tried Emily. She gave me a fantastic haircut, and actually shared her opinion with me and suggested something new instead of taking the "safe" route of just agreeing with what ever I suggested. I got a long layered razor cut, and was very happy with it. However, I have an ethical dilemma. While she gives nice haircuts, she is not a nice person. She spoke at length of how she and her friends would set up dates with older men on line, and then stand them up and drive by honking. She also talked trash about her co-workers, other clients, her boss, how much she hates the salon, and pretty much everyone in general. She is the stereotypical unhappy, catty office witch that people only tolerate because they can bake well, or in her case, cut well. I got my hair cut by Dan once instead, and I wasn't happy with the service at all. The water was too hot, he kept burning my scalp by holding the hair dryer too close to it for too long, and kept hitting my face with the comb and other tools. Surprisingly amateurish. OK hair cut, nothing special. I have put off getting a hair cut while I look around for someone better. I've run out of time and will be going back soon, but with regrets about contributing to the income of such a horrible person. If you want someone who will actually speak their mind, and give you an opinion about trying something new, then Emily could be your girl. Just watch what you say, or you could be the entertainment for the next client. more

I went in just for a haircut at City Hair but was very rudely told that I "can't leave my hair color like that" and that I "shouldn't torture myself". Emily does not know me and I hadn't asked for her opinion. When I explained that I didn't want to do anything with the color for a while, she said "I'm not going to argue with you" in what seemed like an angry tone. She harshly and very quickly washed my hair (no pampering whatsoever), leaving my ear full of shampoo. She cut it very quickly...seemed very eager to be finished. She charged me 45 dollars for the cut (15 dollars more than I was quoted on the phone) and when I asked about parking, she told me that they don't validate parking and asked where I had heard that they did. She offered to sell me validation stickers. When I got home and all of the gel had dried, I realized that one side was much different from the other and that the back was much shorter than the front (I had asked for a slightly shorter back to the cut), so I steeled myself and called back, asking politely for just another 5 minutes to blend the back in with the front. At first she said she was totally booked and couldn't fit me in for 4 days, but she finally just told me to come right back, which I did. When I was waiting for the only other customer in the salon to finish up, I heard Emily offer to give this woman several parking validation stickers. The woman had not asked. The story is long, but suffice it to say that I was treated disrespectfully, was over-charged, and didn't get a very good haircut. I would suggest that this salon is for the young and adventurous. I have reason to believe, from things I saw, heard and experienced that Emily and the owner (whose name I forget, but he was the only other stylist there) are fairly vindictive, catty, very judgmental and hostile toward people who don't share their way of looking at things. It was an awful experience, bordering on abusive. more

I went to City Hair on Capitol Hill when someone I know (who always looks great) recommended this hair salon. In the course of several months I had three haircuts from three different stylists and I was so disappointed – it was like each haircut was worse than the last one. I have gone to a number of hair salons in Seattle and stylists have told me that my hair is easy to cut – I wear it short so cutting it should not be a big deal. I have to say my experience at City Hair was disappointing to say the least. The stylists are friendly and it is not like they aren’t trying to give you a good cut – but what a waste of money! And that reminds me of two other things. The first time I called to make an appointment I asked how much they charged. I was quoted one price on the phone, but after receiving a mediocre trim of my short hair, they charged me a higher price then what I had been quoted. The second time, the stylist rang up my haircut himself. I gave him a large bill and after he made change he held the money in his hand and asked me if he could keep it as a tip! The cut was so poor, so not what I wanted, that I wasn’t planning on tipping him, but I was too embarrassed to ask for my change, so I just said, “sure, keep it.” more

I was very pleased with the service I got from Emily of City Hair. Even though the rest of the staff is sort of creepy, Emily shines through. Emily is an amazing stylist with a great personality that will some day take her place in one of Seattle's better establishments. I will recommend Emily to all my friends so we can help her accomplish just that. more

Just to reiterate the review on Emily! She is an artist, a true connoisseur of hair! I hope she sticks around because I'm never leaving. It's great when your new in town and you find a dentist, doctor, hair stylist of the stars! GO TO HER NOW! more

I got my hair cut from them once, and so I thought and decided to go back to them. The second time they accidentally shaved it all off. They said it was a mistake, but i knew they were trying to give me revenge for not tipping them the first time. more

I got a pretty decent cut from Emily at City Hair. She was a bit tough on me, because I'm not high-maintenance enough. But, she did show me great techniques and options for styling my short cut. I loved the fact that I was able to get in for a cut on the same day that I called. I am just such a late planner, that it helped being able to get right in. The salon is nice and they have very good prices. In and out in an hour for $45 including tip! But, keep in mind that you can't do the tip on the credit card. Tips are cash only. more

This place is great. They take you trough the process step by step. They listen to imput and provide reasoning as to whether or not they agree. I definitely recommend this place to anyone. They do color, cuts and anything else you want. more

I have been getting my hair cut by Dan at City Hair for years and have never had a bad cut or style or color. I have had my hair at all lengths, from longer than shoulder length to just a couple inches long. Every length has had a unique style that has been perfect for my face, hair & lifestyle. I highly recommend this salon! more

I have found a treasure. This woman is amazing.... She is an artist, and made me feel at home right away. I sat in the chair, and Emily took me step by step through the cut, and was considerate of my feeling, and opinionated enough to be artistic, and meticulous. I have referred my friends, and colleagues they've all been very pleased with her work. She not only cuts, she does hair color that looks like you walked out of a magazine.. I have never had color that made my hair look, and feel better than when I walked in... more
