Bruno's 5/19/2006

They have a bad habit of closing and renovating every year or so, but when it’s doors are open, Bruno’s is a very groovy lounge with plush booths to sit in and carouse with your your friends. This is also the best place in the area to see jazz on a regular basis, or at least it would be if the stage wasn’t crammed into a narrow space away from the rest of the lounge. It gets pretty crowded for any group that’s popular enough to pull in more than 15 people. Maybe that’s what they’re renovating this time… regardless though, I’ve seen some great shows here and if you can snag one of the few bar stools near the stage, it’s a perfect place to sit and listen. more

Tony Soprano Would Drink Here 4/24/2005

Swanky and retro-plush, Bruno's restaurant has been a Mission Street landmark for decades. The booths are -- what else? -- red vinyl, and the menu reads like a guide to what a cutting-edge godfather might eat. The venerable dining room opens onto a stretch bar with an early-'60s mirrored wall behind it. Be sure to take advantage of this feature to check your makeup and/or pompadour, because the stylish Bruno's atmosphere demands a certain amount of primping and strutting. The sunken back bar has a teeny dance floor and a few tables; the front room is flanked by cozy booths. Both bar areas host live music most nights, ranging from great jazz in front (regulars are Ralph Carney and Marcus Shelby) to eclectic alterna-pop in back. more
