Keep the Brattle Alive 5/18/2006

The Brattle is the kind of movie theater you think is great but maybe don't go to. They show movies you can see on DVD, you think; they only sometimes show the latest films; they are not big. I am here to tell you to go anyway. When can you see Casablanca on the big screen, or an entire day of Warner Brothers cartoons? Where can you get a Joan Crawford double feature, and that double feature means you get two movies on one ticket? The Brattle theater has a whole host of movies old and new, and it's an education in film. They show a lot of new independent films as well you might never see at the Loews. Moreover, they even have popcorn. more

Brattle Theater....they show mostly independent films 3/24/2006

This is a funky little theater...they kind of show films with a cult following. We saw the old King Kong movie there. They also sometimes will have film a day devoted to one old movie star or sometimes they might have a day of Loonie toones cartoons and so on. It varies. A small theater. A lot of the college crowd packs the theater. Everyone in the audience had a ball when we went.....the audience laughed or clapped at particular scenes in the movie....... more

Great 3/17/2006

The Brattle Theatre has many great independent feature films as well as special showings of old favorites. They also showcase a good many foreign films that you can't see at other area movie houses. The old-school theatre is good and inexpensive. Located convieniently near Harvard Square, it's a Cambridge favorite! more

Save the Brattle! 11/23/2005

While I love independent film houses, and I'm willing to donate money to save the Brattle, I didn't have the best movie experience there. I went to see Serenity over the weekend and encountered two problems. First, the film stopped altogether at one point. Second, the sound became garbled for the last 30 minutes of the film. I don't want to dump on the place, because it is well worth saving. But c'mon Brattle - provide a decent movie experience at least. more

Good & Old-Fashioned 8/18/2005

This theater is one of a kind. Here they show really good old movies, the essential classic films. Last month was dedicated to Hitchcock (one of my personal favorites). Sometimes the dedicate a month to a great actor or great director and show their films. They also show independent films, which is a rare thing nowadays. Basically, I have never seen a bad movie here and I've been going for 3 years. Top notch. more

Legendary, fine films 8/18/2005

This independent cinema shows great films. Look for their bimonthly calendars, at the box office and all over town. They have cool programs such as film noir mondays, and festivals of various directors. They also show "recent raves" -- art house movies that have gotten rave reviews recently. The theatre itself is old school, and the AV quality is not on par with a huge modern cinema. But it doesn't matter -- there's even a mezzanine. Highly recommneded. more

Shows everything at least once 8/17/2005

The Brattle has a legendary reputation in the Boston area for good reason. Their selection of movies always contains at least one movie that you want to watch that week and the popcorn is darn good. The seats are pretty comfortable and the ambiance is conducive to putting one in the right frame of mind to watch a good movie. The selection usually changes on a daily basis. Put all of these elements together and you have a old fashioned movie house that I hope will never disappear or change. more

Great independent cinema 8/17/2005

One of the best independent cinema I have ever been to. Friendly service, convenient location, nice building, I had a very enjoyable moment being there. They also offer student and group discounts, which is a good thing. You can also plan ahead and buy the tickets in advance on their website to make sure you get the seats. If you like watching independent movies, you should try watching them here. Recommended. more

In for a good time 8/15/2005

This old fasioned movie house with only one screen shows all sorts of movies, often in a double feature format. It is located on the outskirts of Harvard Square and although it is pricey, it is a nice throwback option as opposed to the standard hollywood flick. It doesn't fill up very often so don't sweat it if you can't buy tickets in advance. more
