Under the radar for great prices 3/21/2010

The owner, Teddy, buys huge quantities if he can get large discounts. He passes those on, which is why his case prices are so good. If he doesn't get a discount, he may keep the product but will price it at what he paid and if it doesn't move, he just stops carrying it. He has a nearby warehouse much bigger than the store so he can take big orders, unlike most stores in NY that are cramped for space. He caters to the customers in the nearby neighborhood, so he stocks what they buy, except that he won't buy distributor closeouts. But that's why you may not find very rare Burgundies or Barolos, for example. And unlike 90% of the stores in NY and NJ, he actually keeps the temp cool in the summer. It's why his wife is always wearing a sweater in August. They are not wine snobs at all - they are an unpretentious family that just happens to love wine. It's becoming my favorite store - no attitude, no phony posing, no attempt to be uber-sophisticated about wine. And they offer great discounts on multiple bottle mix and match purchases. more

Outrageous Price 8/5/2005

I needed a quick pick for Champaign so I decided to go to this store since it was the closest. I had in mind of buying Remy Martini. I asked for the price and was shocked that they priced it at thirty-five dollars. In other stores they charge about twenty-five dollars. I ended up leaving in empty hands. I was very disappointed. They tried to rip me off. I ended up going to another store. more

Warehouse size, wineshop feel 7/26/2005

Nestled under the BQE (hence the name), BQE Wines and Liquor is a big store, but it doesn't feel like a warehouse liquor store. It's well kept, and the counter people are friendly - much better than a bored guy slouching behind bullet proof glass! You will of course be able to find your basic well known liquors in a variety of sizes, and the sheer size of the store allows for a good number of other, lesser known brands. There's also a very good selection of wines, many of them labeled with mini reviews. The wine prices vary, as wine prices will, but I've gotten several nice bottles for around $10 each. Bonus, they're open on Sundays. more
