Worst

Maybe back in the early 90's this place was good, but with today's quality authentic Mexican food in the area, this place cant keep up. Pros: location Cons: loud, smokey, ...

Delicious Cajun/Mexican Food 7/10/2006

This restaurant is a great place to go for a quick bite to eat before a movie. It is a wonderful combination of Cajun and Mexican food, with something for everyone. I am a pretty strict vegetarian, and have always been able to find something yummy to eat. The service is pretty good; I have never had any complaints. It’s a good value for the money. The appetizers are HUGE and a quesadilla appetizer will easily serve two people. The guacamole is among the best I have ever had in my entire life. It is made fresh on the premises, and you can tell. The restaurant itself is brightly decorated, and great music is always playing in the background. It never gets too loud, at least when I have been there. I definitely recommend this restaurant, if you are visiting Harvard Square! more

Tex Mex at last! 5/16/2006

If this restaurant was in my home state of Texas, I would probably only rate it three stars, but for the sake of its being a welcome beacon of Tex Mex light in Cambridge, I give it four stars. In addition to solid Tex Mex fare, the Border Cafe also offers a range of Cajun food. The enchiladas are satisfying, and if you're in the mood for a Cajun flare, go for the crawfish and shrimp ones. Margaritas here are good, the tortiall chips never run out, and the decor reminds me of my favorite places back home. The bustling atmosphere is noisy but full of energy and makes this one of my favorite places around for some good Tex Mex comfort food. more

Loud, Crowded, Pretty Good 5/14/2006

If you feel like curling up somewhere quiet and reading your book, do not come to the Border Cafe. Its deal is that it is loud and crowded and hectic and you can have margaritas, maybe many of them, and have a loud festive time. Having said that, the food is pretty good here: nachos, fajitas, and other Mexican-type meals. There are several different types of margaritas and mixed drinks (ever had a watermelon margarita?) and they are well made and strong. Come with a pack of people, get in line, and prepare to make a ruckus. more

The Border Cafe 4/24/2006

The Border Cafe has action coming and going. Waiting on line jsut warms you up for the main dish inside. Be prepared to speak up -- the acoustics create sheer madness, making it sometimes it hard to hear. Yet most people are too busy diving into thier varied exotic tropical drinks, the mountainous stack of nachos, or thier scrumtuous Cajun and Blackened or refreid dishes. You will not go hungry, crazy or bored at the Border. It's a great mix of students, porofessionals and out-of- towners. The liveliest spot in Harvared square. more

Always crowded but worth the wait 4/16/2006

Good tex mex/cajun can be hard to come by in the northern reaches of the country. That is why Border Cafe, located in Cambridge, is a gem to be treasured. Drinks here are served cold and strong. There are a number of different margarita's to choose from here. The menu consists of two main sections-fajitas and creole food. There is also a section for vegetarians. Prices here are very reasonable with dinner for meat eaters priced from nine to fifteen dollars. Vegetarians pay even less and can obtain a reasonable meal for around eight dollars. Overall, service is good but can be slow during peak hours. more

Standard Mexican Fare and Drinks 4/15/2006

The food is what you would expect a typical American Mexican restaurant, though you really can't go wrong with any of the dishes. They all taste fine and pretty much exactly like you'd expect. What is an utter disappointment, though, is the drinks. The margaritas taste extremely watered down and aren't worth the money. You're better served by ordering beer, which is actually fairly inexpensive for a restaurant. more

Nice 4/14/2006

The food's a bit more expensive than regular tex-mex, but at least it's consistently good. Try the black bean and corn empanada...yum yum. Don't get the margaritas though, they're very watered down. Can get extremely crowded, so be prepared to wait. Also, if you want to have a dinner conversation, try to get seated downstairs instead of up (upstairs is where the loud groups are seated, as well as the bar). All in all, not bad. more

Border Cafe 3/17/2006

This is our absolute favorite restaurant; it has the best Mexican food ever! We go about once a week and only get one thing - THE CHICKEN FAJITAS! The tortillas are homemade, which is a must for good fajitas. The chicken is grilled and juicy. The chicken is marinated in something delicious! The chips and salsa are OK. We love this restaurant. It's our favorite in Boston and Cambridge!!! more

Mexican food hot spot 9/13/2005

The food here is basically Tex Mex. When you get here, you get an almost endless supply of tortilla chips. The entrees here don't really get you full but they are good. It will cost about $10 for each entree. I would check this place out. more

Solid Tex-Mex food 9/3/2005

The Border Cafe has typical tex-mex offerings, in a bustling environment. Their food isn't off the charts, but it's decent quality and good prices. more

Best Tex mex Restrauant in Cambridge 8/16/2005

Border Cafe serves really good mexican food. Located in harvard square, it has a great atmosphere and the best magaritas in Cambridge. Harvard, BU, and MIT students alike visit this great tex-mex hangout. The food is great and cheap. The fajitas at the Border Cafe are superb. One great thing about this place--it comes with all you can eat complimentary chips and salsa, all fresh made the same day and served to you warm. more

Border Cafe - Tex Mex 8/6/2005

The Border Cafe has a great atmosphere, with a good selection of texmex items. The fish taco is especially tasty - a breaded and fried catfish with cheese and salsa wrapped in a taco, served with a side of jamalaya or beans and rice. Many customers also enjoy the variety of alcoholic beverages available. However, the atmosphere is great for all. more

great tex-mex! 8/6/2005

this place makes uniquely flavorful tex-mex food. there's an added depth to the beans and rice that i've never tasted before. they also serve warm, freshly-made nachos and a really great salsa. highly addictive! i got the fish tacos, which sounds a little sketchy but was actually fantastic (catfish). and finally, service was friendly and fast. more
