The World's Greatest Used Book Store 8/9/2009

If you're the type who can spend countless hours in a used book store the size of a shoe box, prepare to enter Nirvana. The Book Barn not only has it's central building (an old Victorian type house) bursting at the seams with used books but has numerous outbuildings on the property filled with genre themed shelves. There are tons of comfy old chairs placed in quiet nooks and loads of friendly cats looking for a warm lap to curl up into. Fiction or non, the Book Barn will have what you're looking for whether you know it or not. Come early, bring a lunch and plan to spend the day. This is truly a book lover's paradise. Don't be disappointed if they don't have that New York Times bestseller you're looking for, this place does a high volume of business and sometimes stuff like that is just the luck of the draw. Instead, use this as a place of exploration to discover new places, new favorites and genres you never knew existed as well as a place to renew ties to those you already love. If you're a used book lover, I defy you to visit the Book Barn and leave with less than a dozen books. more

Heaven 7/14/2006

The Book Barn in Niantic, CT is one of the most perfect places on earth for a book lover. You can find almost any title you're looking for, and the book will be used and cheap! My only issue with the store is that it is cat-friendly, and I am highly allergic. So load up on the Claritin before you go! And don't expect to just pop in, grab a few books and go; you will browse their many buildings for hours, and be happy to do it. It's an experience, not a shopping trip. Bring a bunch of friends, make it a day, and IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE WRITTEN WORD!!!!! more

The bookstore from heaven 8/18/2005

Even though there's a small outbuilding on their property called "Hades", believe me, the Book Barn is made in heaven. If you love rustic and real, this is your place---If you want glitz and gelato, "buh-bye." (Although they do usually offer free good ol' regular coffee and donuts.) My husband and I love the Book Barn. There's the large main building, which is an old barn, then a few outbuildings, all nicely stuffed with gently used books of all categories. We can browse in there for hours. They also buy used books, but call ahead to find out if they're paying in cash or store credit the day you want to sell. Sometimes it's cash, other days credit. The property is charming and even sports a few pet goats and cats. more

This place is great! 8/1/2005

The Book Barn is just that... a barn. Actually, it's more like a small commune! There are several buildings on the property, some big- some small. Each building is host to a different genre of used books. They have everything from horror to self help, fantasy to cooking. The books are a dollar for paperbacks and various prices for hardcover. Book Barn will buy your used books from you. This is also a great place to take the kids as they have swings and outside toys, little ponds and a few goats to feed. Several cats run freely throughout the buildings and the yard. more

The happiest place on earth 7/12/2005

Mmm...books. How to describe the joys of Book Barn? Let's see... 1. You pull into the little parking lot, and there are buildings scattered around you. And they're all full of books. Glorious used books, all being sold for cheap, everywhere you wander. See, it's barns, and they're full of books. 2. There are cats and kittens and dogs everywhere, perfect for grabbing a book and cozy chair and test-driving that huge volume you were considering. 3. There are snacks and coffee to fortify you as you search for good books. 4. These folks have a great sense of humor - like Hades, a small barn filled with paperbacks. Why do they call it Hades? Because NOTHING is alphabetized!!! The only thing joining those books is that they're paperback! Arrrgh! 5. It's easier to find things in the other barns, if you're looking for something in particular. The books aren't smelly or musty - they make sure of that. And you can find almost anything for which you may be searching...and usually a couple of things you didn't yet know you needed. They're open 9am to 9pm every day except Christmas and Thanksgiving. Go splurge. more
