Vinyl memories 5/28/2006

Do you really really need a vinyl single of David Bowie singing Heroes in German? And do you need to talk about it a lot before you buy it? And do you want to feel like you had to work for it -- come here. Bleeker Bob's was a haunt of my high school years, and I discovered all sorts of great music here. If you still love vinyl and have ecclectic tastes from the 70s on, it's worth looking into. more

Come for the music 8/5/2005

You come here for the thousands of overpriced records of all sorts of genres and eras. It's dirty, cluttered, and the staff isn't at all like the chain stores. But if you have the cash and can pay $100+ for a Rolling Stones first pressing, go here. I once saw David Bowie in here looking for a Dexy's Midnight Runners record, his wife Iman and publicist in tow. Vinyl and living history here. more

Not a place for obscure finds, but ok for some things 8/3/2005

Well, the staff was kind of sour. The place was a mess. It's not the kind of place where you can expect to ask for something and have it in your hand immediately. If you have some time to kill, however, you can occasionally find a real gem in their piles of mostly crap. I've been to better record shops and honestly I don't think their name reflects what they have. I don't consider a huge amount of 70's music to be "oldies" - especially the kind that they have in abundance - but to each their own! I'd rather shop at other places in the city. more

Punk Lives 7/10/2005

This Village institution has an enormous selection of of used and imported vinyl and Cds. I used to shop at their old store 25+ years ago and the new shop is even funkier if possible. Don't let the name fool you although called golden oldies you can sense a definite interest towards old punk especially the New York scene. Where else can you find posters for Johnny Thunders on the walls and Dead Boys tee shirts. The store is a mess and somewhat disorganized. Sometimes the staff is friendly and cheerful and other times surly but I guess that adds to the entertainment value of the visit. more

There's little about Bleecker Bob's that doesn't scream ""NYC punk."" But the warped wood floors, handmade cardboard/masking tape dividers (""Cheap Metal!""), black-and-white...
