After using Nikon-F film cameras since '68, I finally decided to totally convert to a Nikon digital camera and spent some time with a couple of the sales folks at Bernie's Photo and decided that a Nikon D90 would satisfy all my needs and was told that they'd be willing to accept my Nikon FTN and four lenses on trade. I had a relative call later to determine if they had a D90 in stock and the fellow he spoke to at Bernie's tried to talk him into a different model which, as I found out by perusing the Nikon site, is more expensive. Considering this, I purchased a D90 and a couple Nikkor lenses elsewhere. I've since found that I wanted to get a 70-399mm Nikkor zoom lens and stopped at Bernie's again, was told on 12/23/13 that they didn't have a Nikon D90 in stock and that it would have to be ordered from Nikon and they were closed for the holidays. They indicated that they would have it shipped to me in NC but, when I called on 1/17/14 to inquire as to why I hadn't received my lens yet, I was told they had it there and they would ship it. I finally received the lens on 1/21/14. Please note that Howard at Bernie's Photo had increased the price of the 70-300mm Nikkor lens above the Nikon suggested retail price in order to cover what he was supposedly ""giving me for my trade"" in of my old Nikon FTN and four lenses. Any future purchases will be done via B&H in NY. more

I bought a camera there and they treated me fairly. Also, they have film for Polaroid cameras at a reasonable price. more

Diamon in the Ruff 11/18/2011

If you are a internet shopper and price is your bottom line then Bernies is not for you. If you want someone to show you how to operate a piece of digital or photo equipment explain why you should buy this not that or you own a camera thats old and want info on how to use it or anything photographic for that matter Bernies can do it. Its an old fashion CAMERA STORE you cant and will not recieve any info from the internet. Small indepentent speciality store cannot compete wil the internet. on pricing the manufacture have stacked the deck again the small busness and cater to big box store and Costco etc. Bernies is not perfect you are paying a few bucks more not outrageous. Call and ask for my man Howard (been there for ever) he will treat you right. I am a retired and enjoy digital photography and recommend you stop in and support a not only local but one of the last real Photo Stores in Pa. more

Extemely slow and unfriendly 10/6/2011

I stopped in to pick up a particular photographic paper that my daughter needed for her college B&W class. I had called ahead of time and they said they had it. I ran down on my lunch hour because we needed it ASAP. I walked into the store and there were litterally 10 people waiting to be waited on. It was completely disorganized and the people working there had no cares in the world about all the customers. I found the place to be messy and the staff completely unfriendly and not knowledgable. After nearly 40 minutes, a kind gentlemen allowed me to go in front of him because he knew I was stressed about getting back to work. One of the store's staff actually tried taking someone that came in after us! Perhaps they should try a number system or have camera sales be separate from supplies. The price I paid for the paper was $20 more than what they quoted me on the phone. Next time I will just order online and pay for overnight shipping before I go back there. UGH! more

The owner is rude 6/27/2011

The owner of Bernies is rude, arrogant and full of himself. He knows little to nothing of photographic technology newer than 1989 and most of the other people there are just as bad. They will lie to you to get you to buy anything they can. Most of the store has the ""Screw them and toss them out the door"" attitude, especially good for this is the heavy set guy who ran the used camera store before it closed. He is so full of himself its amazing. One person that is still there and stands out in a terrible mix of employees is Howard. I've dealt with him many times and he is a pleasant, down to earth guy that will tell you the truth and be straight with you about products and pricing. They have had other good employees over the years as well, an older gentleman named Rick who was one of the nicest guys you could meet and a younger blonde kid who was like an encyclopedia and incredibly personable. My advice? If you have to go to Bernies walk in and ask for Howard. If he's not there, leave. more

Extremely Bad Experience 4/28/2011

I dropped off three rolls of 120 film and had to wait 6 weeks for a process that they assured me would take only 2 weeks. I called several times and the employee was rude and unapologetic. When I went to pick up the pictures they were overexposed, bent and actually had dirt on the white backs. I also requested and paid for white borders around them which was not done. The employee was just plain hateful and apathetic about the whole thing. It was by far the worst experience I've had with a photo center. more

Pittsburgh's Best Video/Photo Transfer/Repa Service Provider 4/2/2011

I went to Bernie's to ask for help transferring my dad's old home videos from all sorts of outdated formats to a digital format that I could edit. Not only did Bernie's help me do all of this, they did so quickly, professionally, and very economically. Moreover, they went above and beyond the call of duty when some of the tapes proved to be damaged and/or challenging to transfer. Instead of charging me a lot more money or just simply telling me that they couldn't work with those trouble tapes, they creatively figured out ways to overcome the challenges that my tapes presented and continued on with the project. Finally, the staff at Bernie's is second to none. I had an exceptionally positive experience working with the tech coordinator as well as her tech guys. (Ask for Donna!) If you have ANY old videos or photos that need to be transferred into more modern digital formats. Or if you have any other moving or still film related challenges or needs, I DEFINITELY 100% recommend Bernie's. You won't be disappointed. I certainly wasn't! more

Reliable, helpful, friendly, instructive 10/14/2009

I've been shopping at Bernie's for 25 years. I've repeatedly put myself in their capable hands for purchases of some type of equipment that was new to me and I've always been satisfied. I have bought paper and film from them in the old days, cameras of several kinds, attachments of many kinds, tripods. They recognize my voice on the phone! Is that a good thing these days? You bet! It means a lot to have some history at a local place instead of some anonymous big box. It FEELS like photography in Bernie's, and it is! Pros: Great knowledge of the whole industry Cons: Can't think of any! more

Unfortunately, the only photo shop in Pittsburgh... 8/5/2008

Snotty, condescending clerks. Slow service as they chat with their friends. Extremely unhelpful, no customer service to speak of... in other words, the last place you would want to go if only there was another choice for a walk-in camera shop in Pittsburgh. Just go online to B&H or Freestyle or something if you can help it... in a word, Bernie's is awful. Pros: Convienient place to get photo supplies in the city Cons: Everything else more

Condescending 2/24/2007

I've had nothing but bad experiences with Bernie's. Unless you're using the highest tech, cutting edge equipment prepare to be condescended to by snotty clerks. And their prices aren't very good either. Pros: Decent selection Cons: Horrible employees more

Great online store! 12/14/2006

I've never personally been inside of Bernies but their online store is excellent. Price are low, BH type pricing on most equipment and their shipping is quick. When i called their sales staff was knowagable and the person i talked to about their website (prices and products) knew what he was talking about. I'd recommend Bernies to anyone living in pittsburgh or looking for an alterative to the big NYC stores. Support your local stores! Pros: Great service, good prices, local store, if they don't have it they WILL get it to you and quickly Cons: Small store doesn't always have everything but they will order it for you and have it to you quickly more

Quality Varies! 8/21/2005

Depending on who you can find to answer any questions, your visit to this place can be a disaster! Pros: Parking, Film still available Cons: Wacked clerks, variable pricing more
