A class act in Cary 8/13/2007

What a gem! Hidden in the mall in front of Target in the old Houlihan's. The ambience is a little stiff for the location on the outside, but inside the doors it's very friendly and inviting. We go for the great deal on drinks and appetizers every afternoon. $10 apps for only $5! The steaks are the finest I've ever had. Better than any others in the area. The Aux Poivre sauce option is unique, slightly sweet and peppery, made with bourbon, not cognac. Other items are a heavenly seabass, excellent lamb chops and other good pastas and seafood. They can cut any size steak you want. They even have a kids menu (rare for a NICE restaurant)and I've never felt put off when we take our children there. I think Bentley's is the best restaurant this side of town. If you lean to Chili's- you probably think it's expensive, but if you ever eat at a downtown 'upscale' restaurant, Bentley's is just as good for a LOT less! Pros: Excellent steaks Cons: location is tough more

Overrated by far! 6/13/2007

The atmosphere is beautiful and the wait staff wonderful - however - the food is little to be desired. I dined at Bentley's last night with my boyfriend and besides the great service, we were left completely unimpressed. At $121 for only two people, you would really expect a quality seasoned cut of steak, however, my steak was dry and over cooked. Our appetizer was average, and you are only offered one choice for a side item with you meal. Salads are also seperate. Bottom line, I would not recommend Bentley's. If you are looking for an upscale place that serves amazing steaks and seafood - try the Angus Barn. I'll never go back to Bentley's. Pros: service is great Cons: food is not worth the money that you pay, highly overrated more

Great atmosphere, average food 6/7/2007

My husband and I went here for dinner last night and were excited for a date night. The atmosphere was awesome, and the service was great. Then the food came, honestly something was just off, the Shrimp dish I got was just tasteless, the polenta was too sweet and the shrimp tasted blah. He had the tuna and was really excited for a sweet dish but it was just plain as well. I was disappointed to pay those prices for something I feel we could have done better ourselves at home. Pros: ambiance, parking, service Cons: food more

Good food, Great service 5/20/2007

I have recently dinned at Bentleys with my family. We were a little skeptical of the atmosphere when we went in because we had our younger sons with us and it appeared to be a littly upscale. (It would be a very nice date spot!) When we sat down our server put us at ease. She was a very sweet girl from up north. She was attentative to us and even to the children wich is impressive because usually servers look right past the children. But our kids loved her and she was very patient when they wanted to order themselves. Our glasses were always full and we never had to ask for a thing. We started at her suggestion with the calamari wich was fantastic followed by their special that night wich was scallops and rice. I would strongly recomend both dishes. Our compliments go to the chef, I wish we left room for desert. We plan on dinning again very soon. We also saw that they have a large party room in the back, we are thinking of having a wedding reception there, if we can have that same server of course! Overall, the service was great and the food was too. more

Great food...Great atmosphere...Great service 3/29/2007

We ate at Bentley's tonight and absolutely loved it. The atmosphere was appealing--with just the right amount of lighting and background music. The booths have high enough backs and are situated where it is easy to have intimate conversations without people at neighboring tables interfering. Our waitress did a super job. She was very articulate and easy to understand--and was very attentive to our needs. Our glasses never got below 3/4 full. The food was fabulous. I had a petit filet--which truely melted in my mouth. My husband had New York strip steak cooked to perfection. The asparagus was also a complement to my meal. My husband had the au gratin potatoes--which were simply delicious. The portions were just the right size. To top off the meal, we had mouth-watering desserts. The creme brulle and bread pudding were both worth the calories and the money. When we were walking out of the restaurant the hostesses actually thanked us for coming--what a nice touch. We both commented on our way to the car that we would definitely return to Bentley's. It was a very, very enjoyable evening. Pros: Food, atmosphere and service Cons: None more

Hits and Misses 2/24/2007

My wife and I went on a Saturday night. The parking was good and we were seated immediately. The atmosphere is warm and a little noisy, but not too bad. The service was very good and the server was quite attentive. As others have said, the bread with its olive and sundried tomato butter was excellent. Our appetizer, stuffed banana peppers, was likewise very good. However, the entree's is where the restaurant fell down. Some of the problems were in the recipe, part in the presentation. My wife ordered the Bentleys Chicken. The basic flavor was good, but the basil overpowered the meal. Also, the chicken was served on a large bed of pasta that was not mentioned in the menu. My wife was noting a pasta dish, so this was a surprize when it arrived. I had the Pork Chop Chutney with the Fresh vegetable of the day, what should have been a medley of carrots, zucchini and I forgot the third. What I got was carrots and a couple of pieces of asparagus swimming in the bottom of a bowl/plate topped with the pork chop. The sweet balsamic vinegar was too sweet, and on the carrots it created almost a medicine taste. Since the carrots were on the bottom of the bowl/plate, there was no way to separate the vegetables from the 'sauce'. Will I be back? Probably one more time. The restaurant has some good ideas and flavors and I'm hoping my experience was just an off night from the kithcen. Pros: Ambience, Service, bread& butter Cons: entrees more

My Tasty Valentine 2/14/2007

Took my honey there for Valentine's last night -- it was excellent. They were giving out roses to all the ladies upon arrival, which was a nice touch. Service was attentive and courteous. We each got a featured entree, she the steak and I the chicken. Both were excellent, although hers was pricey ($38) even for this restaurant. It was redeemed by the fact that you could taste every penny in the dish. We've been here on a few occassions and never been disappointed. Pros: Great service, great food--especially steaks. Cons: A bit pricey more

Delicously Delectable 2/13/2007

All I can say is WOW! Service was incredible; food was wonderful and the atmosphere is soothing and very romantic. Had the caesar salad (better than any I have had), shrimp & chicken and creme brulee....and fell in love with all three! Can't go wrong dining here but expect a hefty check. Can't wait to go back. Pros: Fabulous food, great service, romantic atmosphere more

Very Well Designed Restaurant 12/18/2006

Hats off to Mr. Lou and Chef Alex. This place is really one of the finest places I've dined. My kids were with me and enjoyed their gourmet meals. The ambience is really soothing and we had a nice relaxing night. The restaurant was quite full. We did make reservations for a party of 4. The restaurant was fabulous. Thanks to the entire staff for a great time...We will be telling our friends and returning soon! Pros: meals are delicious, ambience, decor, friendly staff more

A memorable Night! 12/14/2006

We recently dined at Bentley's on a busy Tuesday evening. We were seated promptly. The crabcakes, salad, creme brulee, filet mignon, and everything else we ordered was delicious! Chef Alex gave us a tour of the kitchen, that was an added "treat"! We are glad we chose Bentley's for our birthday celebration...Bentley's is warm, comfortable, and has a gorgeous setting with such an elaborate, tasty dinner. Chef Alex, you are a superb chef and have your kitchen working like clock work! Hats off to you and your fine team. We plan to dine at the Bentley again in the future, and share this dining experience with many of our friends. Pros: Chef is Personable and Friendly, meals are tasty more

Delicious! We'll Be Back! 12/14/2006

I went to Bentley's Restaurant with my wife and a friend of mine for a delicious dinner. We spent about an hour in the bar drinking & thoroughly enjoyed it. We then sat down at our table and from there on, everything we had was no less than perfect. Everyone ordered a steak of one sort or another. The service was also good. You never have to ask for anything. A waiter/waitress is never more than two feet away at any time. Yes, you will pay some fairly high prices, but you will getting the absolute top of the line food. It doesn't get any better than that. Hats off to the Chef! There is an extensive wine colletion, however our waitress didn't have proper knowledge of the wine choices. We WILL BE BACK AT BENTLEY'S! Pros: Adequate Parking, Well Designed Bar, Comfortable Seating, Food is Superb! more

Portions too small 12/13/2006

My husband and I recently tried Bentley's and were really surprised by the small portion sizes. He ordered the crab cakes, which were served with 3-4 small pieces of asparagus. We eat out frequently and have been to many of the up scale restaurants in the Triangle and generally the price of the entree seems to correlate with the portion size. This did not appear to be the case at Bentley's. I had the Carolina seafood and pasta dish (3 mussels, 4 clams, several small pieces of fish, 3 jumbo shrimp, 3 scallops) which was a better portion size and less expensive than the crab cakes. Needless to say I shared with my husband. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and service at Bentley's and liked the flavor of the food, but would hesitate to return because of the small portion sizes for the price they charge. Pros: Food arrived quickly Cons: Small portions--too expensive more

What a Dining Experience! 12/13/2006

Excellent all around. My wife and I enjoyed our dining experience at Bentley's. The place is well designed with alot of attention to detail throughout the restaurant. Perfect ambience! Be sure to make reservations, as it is a busy restaurant. We were delighted to read that Chef Alex comes from Pittsburgh, our original home. The best Chefs come from the North and his meal preparation, presentation and style are outstounding. We recommend this restaurant to couples and groups. Excellent, Excellent, Excellent! Pros: Food, Presentation of Food, Service, great for "date" nights more

Excellent Cuisine, Great Service 12/13/2006

My husband and I dined at Bentley's 2 nights ago. We both loved the atmosphere and the beautiful decor. Our waitress was very nice, timely and friendly. The food was the best! I had the shrimp and lobster and my husband had steak. Both meals were impeccable! The Chef should be commended for his unique style and flair...We will recommend this to our friends! Thank you for a wonderful dining experience. Pros: Excellent food, ambience, service Cons: make reservations it gets busy! more

Just Okay 12/11/2006

Impeccable service, food was nicely presented. But it was very overpriced and gave VERY small portions. I've eaten at many "gourmet" restaurants and I'm aware that they are not "Claim Jumper" size portions, but this was ridiculous. I ordered a 6oz Filet Mignon that looked closer to 3 oz, with about 1/4 cup of the mushroom risotto. Those who ordered pasta dishes seemed to be pleased, but everyone in my party who ordered a chicken, fish, or steak dish was left hungry. Good thing their bread and butter spread (a mix of roasted red peppers, kalamata olives, and garlic) was so good that we just began devouring them to make up for it. If I want to pay a lot of money for a steak dinner, I'll go to Ruth's Chris. Definitely not going to return unless I plan on making a meal out of their bread and butter. Pros: Ambience and Service Cons: Food portions poor more

Bentley's is AWESOME! 12/7/2006

Awesome decor, service, and the food is unique and impeccable! There IS a "gourmet" kid's menu, just ask and Chef Alex will cretae something to entice your kids. My favorite meal at Bentley's are the crabcakes! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone! more

I could not believe it was a chain!!!!!!!! 12/6/2006

My boyfriend and I stopped in Bentley's one night to see what it was about. There was such a warm atmosphere and very romantic. The decor was quite interesting and different...very unique. Our waitress was a small blonde girl and from the moment she opened her mouth we knew she was getting over 20 percent!!! She was very sharp and had a vast knowledge of the menu. She spoke the specials menu to us as if it were her first time that night!! She was wonderful!! We had a appetizer and 2 salads!! The steak salad was DELICIOUS!!!! The prices are not bad at all and the food is worth the cost completely!!! We loved it there and will be going back!! I wish I had had room for dessert; the menu looks wonderful!! Pros: warm environment, effecient staff, wonderful food, keeps you wanting more Cons: porbably not the best place for children more

Save room for dessert! 12/3/2006

From beginning to end, my meal was absolutely delicious. I ordered the soup of the day, cream of carrot. I was curious and skeptical, but from the first spoonful, I was in heaven. I am not quite sure about the review that commented on the bread and butter as unimaginative- it was fantastic! With every bite I was trying to decipher the ingredients in that spread, to no avail. And the bread was obviously homemade. The wine list offers a good selection of by the glass options, I especially like the S. African red with a nice filet. But the coup de grace was definitely the creme brulee. Topped with fresh berries, it was definitely sized to share, but so delicious I finished it alone anyway. The prices were much more reasonable than I had expected with the $$$$ rating from citysearch. I will be dining there again soon. Pros: fantastic desserts, ample parking Cons: none! more

Go for the flavors, not with the chain food expectations 11/24/2006

If you think cookie-cutter food from Outback, Bonefish, and Olive Garden is ?really good?, then you may find Bentley?s more sophisticated selection of food and flavors challenging. But go anyway, and enjoy the salad, swordfish, and especially the desert ? much better than the typical re-warmed fare. Don?t let the ?American Grill? name put you off. The interior is nicely done ? warm wood and real gas lamps. There is a full sized bar too. The music is a bit unique with lots of 70?s tunes. Yes, Bentley?s needs time to work on the small stuff (like uninspired bread and the accompanying spread), but the service was good. So all of you that complain about the bland Cary foodscape, give Bentley?s a try. more

Slightly Better Than Average 10/29/2006

While the decor is pleasing to the eye, some modifications to the menu seem to be in order. For starters there needs to be a greater selection of dressings for the salads. When asked, our server indciated they did not have any other dressings than listed specifically for each salad. We also found the pricing of the steaks to not match thier taste and quality. For those prices, the flavor and tenderness of the steak needs to be a cut above and our choices did not meet that standard. Also, at those prices, the customer should have the choice of whether or not to have the steak served in what appeared to be a burgundy sauce. Steak of the quality referenced on their menu should always be served dry unless otherwise indicated by the customer. In closing, a larger selection of desserts would also bode well, as variety will make for a happier diner. All in all not too bad for being brand new. Will give Bentleys another chance in the future hoping that some changes have taken place. more

The name gives a casual impression, but this upscale restaurant actually is much more than just an ordinary place to dine.

Editorial
  • In Short
Rich mahogany interior and elegant hardwood floors quickly dismiss the thought of an average neighborhood grill. The shopping locale attracts a mix of couples, families, and corporate guests. New American is more apt, with a tasty twist on the crabcakes and a favorite of regulars, petit filet spiedini. Bring a date and dine at an intimate spot toward the back or make it a fun gathering with a celebratory martini or two, which can easily supplement dessert.
