Editorial review from Citysearch 5/2/2013

I went to this location yesterday at 6 pm. The service was ok, and the chef while cooked good food did very little tricks and was very quiet. However the problem came at the end. Me and my wife had both finished are meals before the chef was done cooking the steaks. I asked the waitress for our check. When it came I had planned to put the food on my card and pay for the tip with cash as that account had a limit I was getting close to. So I told the waitress to only put the 47 dollars on my card, 10 minutes later she came back asking me how much I was giving for a tip to put on my card. When I said I only wanted to put the base cost on my card she said then that I had to give one of the suggested tip prices. (There was only me and my wife, 2 people). I said excuse me are you saying I have to pay that. She then back tracked and said no but everyone pays one of those. I again said no just the 47. She then walked away and we waited 15 minutes well after the rest of the table had left even though I had asked for our check before they even got all of their food.\r \r After 15 minutes because I timed it I went up to the manager and asked for my card back. Another minute later I was able to get it and I told him about what the waitress had said that I had to pay a tip. He blew me off and just said goodby and walked away from me. I was being calm and cool cause I was annoyed. \r \r Mind you this was my birthday celebration in which 1 person came over to sing and they just handed me a scoop of ice cream with Carmel. The person sung out and that was it. It was a horrible experience and I'm very glad this was not my actual birthday just me using my coupon. I've never had anyone demand a tip much less not return my card to me. more

A good finish to a bad start 4/28/2012

We stopped at this place while on my way to my GED class reunion. First of all, what's with sitting next to a bunch of strangers? The fat, bloated jew woman I sat next to smelled like an abandoned shrimp boat adrift in the sun for a year. Or maybe that was the shrimp the mexican guy threw on the grill. Me and my girl slammed some saki while the beaner tossed chicken and shrimp on the grill. He clanked the spatulas so loudly that I couldn't hear the conversation between the fat jew and her girlfriend that I was trying to eaves drop on. I told him to stop doing that and he bowed and tossed a severed shrimp tail at me. I got up and threw my drink in his spic face. The manager replaced him with another bean farter who dumped his ""creation"" on my plate. It looked like the contents of an abortion dumpster, I kid you not! Good thing all the action excited my girl because outside in the parking lot I got my ""Happy Ending"". more

yes, it is good 9/1/2011

Now a few years ago this location burned down and I was devastated, and the word was that they weren't going to rebuild it. But it did finally re-open and I was so excited! The atmophere is alot nicer, the setup and decorations are a giant step up from what they were. But they seem to now be lacking in their culinary skills. The chefs are not all of asian decent anymore, which takes away from experience. Eight out of ten of the chefs appear to be Mexican immigrants, and carry on their conversations with other employees in Spanish. They put no effort into their ""world-famous"" cooking and tricks that www.onsale7,com nike shoes stores makes Benihana what it is. They aren't as friendly, and don't really carry much conversation with the diners like they used to (perhaps due to their ability to not speak English, only Spanish) They seem to just focus on getting the food coooked and get you out as fast as possible, more

A Family Tradition 7/31/2010

My family and I have been eating at Benihana's ever since I can remember. I have been every year on my birthday and special occasions. The prices are a little high to be able to afford to dine at Benihana as much as I would like to. I have always enjoyed eating there, and introducing the place to people who haven't been there before. Aside from this, the food is STILL wonderful and I would recommend anyone who hasn't dined here before to do so. It is an experience, and taste, that you will never forget. I love Benihana. (I recommend the teriyaki chicken and steak! They also have the best ginger sauce and dressing I've ever had!) Pros: The best Japanese food this side of the world Cons: chefs seems to do less, and are not as friendly anymore more

Poor Presentation 2/1/2009

The Memphis Benihana was a huge disappointment. Our chef didn't do any of the knife-juggling, fire-burning tricks that you typically see in Japanese teppanyaki restaurants. The food was ok, but not great, especially considering the price. The drinks were good. It was extremely crowded b/c they were overbooked. We waited for a half-hour despite having reservations. The Benihana is Chicago is 10 times better. I would recommend Shogun if you are looking for a good Japanese restaurant in Memphis. Pros: Good drinks Cons: Chefs don't do many tricks. Food only average. more

Burnt to the Ground 3/16/2008

I sat atop the ruins and drank champagne. Not the best place for good eats and good company, though...as it's no more than a pile of wreckage right now. more

Poor Customer Service, Go to KYOTO! 2/24/2007

I called Benihana to make a reservation. We (Party of 12) were so looking forward to eating there. We haven't been since they remodeled. After I made the reservation, I was told if anyone was late they would start without us and then we could only do 4 separate checks. Since we would have 2 tables and 6 couples I couldn't believe they way I was being treated. I told him we could eat somewhere else, we didn' t want to cause them to much trouble. He said ""OK"". Obviously they have forgotten the golden rule of ""The customer comes firstf"" and they have way to much business! I would recommend KYOTO in Olive Branch, MS. The attitude of the staff is A1 and the food is just as good, if not better! Pros: Food Cons: Service, Attituide towards customer! more
