Beard Papa serves the best cream puffs in the city- large, cold, and yummy. I've been buying cream puffs from them ever since high school, and I still can't get enough. They're so good. They're nothing like the cream puffs you get in the Chinatown bakeries (good, but small and not as creamy). These cream puffs are the definition of cream puffs. Great dessert- also, your friends will forever be grateful if you show up with cream puffs for them on a random surprise. more

The best Japanese import.... 4/4/2006

Since Hello Kitty! Beard Papa's was extremely popular when I was overseas and I had yet to find one in the US until NYC and now Boston! They seriously make the best cream puff's in the world! The crust is super flaky and delicate and they wait until the last second when you order to inject the cream filling- meaning it won't be soggy when you eat it. Delicious flavors of the filling include strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. These are absolutely heaven! And so cheap too for such quality! more

WOW - they serve the best cream puffs - vanilla-flavored cream puffs. They also have other flavors (daily specials) but vanilla is the standard. They also serve coffee and tea. There are a few Papa Beard's in the city. I know there is one in the West Village and also one located in the East Village. YUMMY! more

Blissfully good 3/17/2006

The cream puffs at Beard Papa are heavenly. The original flavor (vanilla) is probably the best -- crunchy shell, gooey cream, deeelicious. Highly recommended to everyone. The price is okay for cream puffs - $1.45 for regular, $1.55 for special flavors (the price can be different at another location). Beard Papa also sells drinks. The Green Tea Frezz is fantastic. more

Cream puffs! 3/11/2006

Beard Papa is one of those weird Japanese phenomena. The store specializes in cream puffs -- they have a few standard flavors, and then there are special flavors for each day of the week. The things are nearly impossible to eat without making a mess (so while seems like the perfect eat as you go food, it's really not). These aren't traditional Italian cream puffs either -- the dough is lighter, thiner and flakier and the cream is less solid. They're not for everyone, but worth a try. The strawberry is particularly good. more

Beard Papa has become my favorite old man face. Better than Santa because Beard Papa is here for me 365 (or close to it). What better way to celebrate a job well done or a pay raise than a cream puff for a little over a buck washed down with delicious, creamy hot cocoa? There are not many better ways... Who knew the Japanese could master French pastry making so well? The vanilla cream is REAL vanilla, I swear. There are flavors too, but I have never been able to tear myself away from the original vanilla. The bathroom here is really clean. Just ask for the key. more

its a little embarassing to say i really dig cream puffs but these things are awsome. what is tricky is that they taste so light going down you could almost thing its healhfood. whats nice about them is that they inject the cream in there fresh so the doonut part doesnt get soggy. be careful of the powered sugar topping. when i go to swallow these thing whole, sometimes i inhale the powder and start choking. but if i had to go, this would be a good way to go.... more

Yummy Cream Puffs! 8/10/2005

OH MY.. That was my first thought when I bit into one of these cream puffs.. I knew it was love at first bit. The shell is cruchy when a great vanilla cream in the middle. Everyday they have a different special flavor. I have tried the strawberry, organic sesame, and chocolate. I loved everyone one of them. They recently raised there prices from $1.25 to $1.45 for a regular one. The special flavors are 1.75? i belive. I am not quite sure, but its still yum! more

Beard Papa's Cream Puffs 10/14/2004

This little lady, low on sugar, miserable and sleepy decided to titillate her senses with a visit to Beard Papa's. A place where she heard wonderous tales of piping hot puffs filled with light, luscious, whipped cream.

Rumours of lines that snakes around the block, are true. Go, at your own risk!

But waiting can be fun -- one gets to observe how the process works!

On one recent visit:

Four ladies in immaculate white aprons and hats manned the counter.

Stationed by the window, the lady closest to me, her task involved putting in fresh, white, unbaked choux pastry shells -- half the size of hockey pucks -- and taking the plump, oversized, baked ones out. Yes, the puffs are baked on premises. After she takes them out, she goes to an urn like machine where she pumps the puffs with cream. Then she puts the puff on the tray next to her.

Where one's tasks end, the other begins. The next lady sprinkles powdered sugar and puts each individual puff in it's own little pocket wrapper bearing the beard papa emblem. She is the one who takes your order. One piece is $1.25, 6 pieces goes for $7.50 and a box of 12 goes for $15.00 plus tax. When she is done with your order, the third lady sticks a "freshness label" with today's date and rings you up. After she rings you up, the 3 in unison, chime "Thank you" in Japanese.

Ah, but I mentioned 4 ladies. The 4th one, she works behind the scenes. She's the one who loads the empty urns of cream.

Like how they advertise, the outer puff shell is crunchy but the cream: absolutely divine!! Oozing, it is delightfully light, slightly chilled, with a hint of vanilla beans! The cream is not the thick, sugary, sickening kind but has a pudding, almost creme fraiche-ness to it. It's just perfect. The way a cream puff should be.
