UPDATE: CLOSED 5/30/2006

Bean recently closed it doors. ... After some years of searching and eating at establishments formerly hosting chinese take-out joints (you know what I'm talking about... the ones that didn't change staff when they converted) I finally found a decient mexican place in the city. The menu isn't very large but the food is done very well. There are some vegan options on the menu which was a nice touch. I'm not vege but I tried the vegan options one night and found them nicely textured but a little starchy by the time you get through them. I strongly recomend the fish tacos. Some of the best I've ever had and they're very consistant in quality. They don't server alcohol but most people bring their own. The blueberry lemonade is very nice if you forgot. more

Tasty Beans 8/13/2005

I finally stopped into Bean recently. I liked the atmosphere, with brightly colored walls and seating at a few tables outside. I would say that they could use a new coat of paint on the inside, as I don't particularly like to eat with a wall 5 inches from me that has paint chipping off of it. But, as far as the food goes, it was quite nice. I had the plantain and black beans, and tried the mexican corn and Blackberry Lemonade ( I believe it was blackberry). The best part of the meal was definitely the plantain and black bean combo, with an interesting texture and flavor. The worst part would definitely be the Mexican corn, which was overcooked, consisted of corn with paprika and butter, and clocked in at over $3.00 for one ear. I won't be purchasing the corn again, when I could make it myself for a fraction of the cost (and probably with a better flavor as well.) They have a good selection of vegetarian dishes, which is what is lacking at Matamoros Pueblo Grocery (If you are a meat-eater, head over there for cheap CHEAP eats). more

Underrated and quiet 8/4/2005

Don't know why this place isn't packed. The menu is limited to standard fare, but has some interesting variations. Basic, good, and decently priced. Not much seating and the bathroom is smaller than some people's broom closet, but a cozy and funky atmosphere. Usually not many people seating in (take out/delivery I guess) and off the main Bedford Ave. Be sure to try the homemade cobbler if they still have some left. It's grat. more
