I was actually looking forward to going here. I heard a couple of good things about it from work and thought it would be nice to try some place new. The whole experience started off wrong... 1) We had a reservation for 6 pm. At 6:15, the waiter came over, spoke to us for a moment, and promptly started setting a table for 6 people. Around 6:30 he realized his error and we, a party of two, were finally seated. 2) After being seated, our ordered were taken around 7. Ten minutes after that, our unsweet tea arrived. No, they don't have Splenda, but we did find a pink packet of sugar substitute from the local 7/11 mixed in with the regular sugar packets. Very classy. 3) The food arrived around 7:30. (Keep in mind that we've been here for 1.5 hours at this point.) His food seemed okay. My chicken parm would have tasted better if it was made with Prego. There were no options for wheat pasta. The piece of chicken, if it was actually chicken, was heavily breaded and paper thin. 4) I asked for a tea refill at this point. The waiter, who never introduced himself, said he would be "right back." However, we never saw him again. 5) The head waiter, Mario, graciously stopped by and asked how much we were enjoying our dining experience. I spoke at great lengths, but it seemed he wanted to run off after the first 10 seconds of my complaint. Again, we asked for a tea refill, since we were charged over $3 a glass, I felt a refil was a reasonable request. 6) Mario dropped off the bill with a curt "I gave you a good discount." We didn't see him again after that. He vanished just as mysteriously as the waiter did. And no, still no flippen tea. As you can guess, I did not leave the waiter a tip and I would not recommend this place to anyone, anywhere. If you want good italian food, please go to Carbara's or the Macronii Grill. Steer clear! Eventually, the economy and the service will put this "5 star restaurant" in it's grave. Pros: Leaving Cons: Horrible food// Slow Service more

Fantastic surprise! Don't read the other reviews! 2/13/2009

I read a coupleof the reviews regrding this restaurant and was hesitant to go ! Boy was I wrong for questioning something before experiencing it for myself. Being a former waiter from a 5-star restaurant earlier in my life, I can be extremely critical of the running of a restaurant and the service I recieve. First of all this place is very quiet so you can actually have a conversation with who ever you take here. the atmosphere is quiet , peacefull, and relaxing. The ownership takes an active role in the serving of the food, drinks, and table side prepared entree's. It was so good that I could not use the gift certificate I brought with me because I would have felt guilty after experiencing the fantastic service, outstanding food quality, and the exceptional way in which it all came together. I would rate it up there with any 4-star restaurant I have visited. I challenge anyone to question the atmosphere, service , and food quality. No waiting around, no cramped into a 1- hour wait and tables on top of each other. I have never written a response or given my opinion to any type of survey before. I feel this place deserves it! Pros: service, quality of food, lighting and atmosphere, very diverse menu, table side service, they called me back after making a reservation to thank me Cons: Hard to find something more

Absolutely Terrible 2/2/2008

Service was slow, food exceptionally overpriced, seafood portofino tasted like old dishwater, had to ask for bread, was afraid to even order dessert. No alcohol, one appetizer, two dinners and total bill was over $80.00? Food quality certainly did not compare to the exorbitant prices or the cheesy atmosphere with the singer who drank and sang way too loud. Can't believe this restaurant stays in business. Food the wait staff to be extremely prejudice and wouldn't even walk a black family, simply pointed to their table and said "there you go". Pros: ???? Cons: Food, ambience, prices..............is there anything else? more

Horrible Service, Avoid Alltogether 1/30/2008

*5 minutes for drunk/drugged host to seat us. *Sat us next to a couple with 4 loud children even though the place was somewhat empty. *10 minutes before a waiter came over. *We ordered our drinks and literally 15 minutes later without seeing the waiter again we decide to get up and leave. *Pricey food, that you are lucky to get to even order. Worst service imaginable. We went to the Bonefish Grill instead and got great service and food. Would not recommend this place even though I hear the food is good yet overpriced. Avoid this place like the plague based on lousy service. Pros: Nothing Cons: Service, service, service, location more

A diamond in the rough 7/1/2003

You wouldn't expect to find a restaurant this fabulous in its location. Set in a lower-income neighborhood in St. Pete, Bastas is a gem just waiting to be found. The interior is beautiful and romantic, with soft lighting, mural-painted walls and Italian music playing softly in the background. The food is original, creative, and impeccably prepared. The service was unsurpassed. I don't know if our waiter was the owner, but he acted like he was and gave us five-star service. He was also very patient with us and did a wonderful job of assisting us in our wine & entree selections. Once dinner came, everyone at the table kept shoving their forks in each others faces, convinced that what they had ordered must the best on the menu; all 5 dishes were incredible. The evening was topped off by complimentary amaretto and Bananas Foster prepared tableside - a fabulous show. Pros: Impeccable service, Unsurpassed food, Lovely Ambience Cons: Location more
