No way this place is anything other than THE BEST 11/24/2010

I just don't get the nay-sayers. If you go to the Barbecue Station be prepared for the finest barbecue anywhere. Particular standouts are the Brisket and Chicken (and I am usually not all that fired up about BBQ Chicken). The Brisket has just the right combination of seasonings and smoke. I'm not sure what wood or combination of wood they use, but it is the signature flavor that brisket is supposed to have. Anything else is second best. I rate BBQ joints first and foremost on the brisket. If the brisket is great, it might be a great place. The Chicken has an incredible flavor to it from just the right seasonings to just the right smoke and still juicy. Smoked Turkey is fabulous, Ribs and Sausage ditto. Cole slaw is not too sweet, a little peppery and just perfect. Ambiance is just not that big a deal to me. If that is your hangup, go to Rudy's and have all the mediocre BBQ you want. If you want the Best Barbecue IN THE WORLD!!! This is the place. more

THIS is barbeque. 8/3/2010

I've eaten BBQ from the Panhandle to East Texas to Galveston to Austin to Corpus and the Valley to West Texas and the BBQ Station is one of the top 5 (maybe 2) in the state, especially the pork ribs. The brisket is fabulous too. more

BBQ Station Is Over Rated 1/23/2009

From the moment we walked in the smell of BBQ was in the air, and that is not a bad thing. Trying to read the menu at the walk up counter was difficult due to the dim lighting. My wife and I had the combo plates. She had the brisket and sausage. Both those meats were OK. I had the brisket and the pork tenderloin. The loin is suposed to be lean but this loin was dry to the point I had to literally douse it in the BBQ sauce to give it some moistness. The BBQ sauce in a squeeze bottle at our table must have been watererd down because I sure didn't taste any flavor from it. I chose the pinto beans as a side order. We were there around 6:30pm(close is 9pm) and the pinto bean container was almost empty. The beans had that unappealing burnt flavor to them. One spoonfull and I never had anymore. The cole slaw was too rich in some sort or dressing that after a few bites, I stopped eating it. The bread was good but hey, they can't mess that up since it was sliced bread from the store. When we walked into the place we smelled BBQ. After we got home we had the smell of that BBQ in our clothing. If you are visiting Texas and want authentic BBQ, go elsewhere. We personally have agreeed not to go back. Cons: Almost everything more

Run Away! 1/6/2009

The previous reviews of this place were confusing, lots of pros and lots of cons. We were looking for a nearby alternate 'cue place, and decided to give the Station a try. Outside the place are several planters filled with empty beer bottles and other unsavory trash, still, we went in. Inside smelled appropriately smoky for this type of establishment, and we were greeted warmly by the man behind the counter. All of us decided what we wanted to eat- combo plates with two meats and two sides for under seven dollars, drinks extra (no beer sold here, despite the outside). Free refills on the pinto beans! Which are located in the dining room in a large cauldron with a broken lid and splatters everywhere from who knows when. Now, I know that this place used to be a service station at one time, but the cleanliness of the place makes it feel like its still in the transition phase. The dining area- dirty looking smudges and splatters on all painted surfaces, tables leaning in all different directions from the floor being unlevel. The soda fountain has greasy buildup from years of not being cleaned properly. The motel style ice machine is centrally located in the middle of the dining area for your convenience, complete with rust stains running down the side, and constantly running motor for ambiance. Oh yeah, the food, creamed corn should not be able to be stacked like Legos. The store bought sausage was about half an hour away from being jerky. The brisket was dry, tough, and flavorless; beef ribs - tough and dry. Meat serving size is approximately 3 ounces. It is a New Year, so maybe I got there just before they changed the deep fryer oil for the season, my fries had that unmistakable old oil flavor. My wife liked the sauce, however the big display shelf in the front of the restaurant advertising bottled sauce for three bucks was empty. One nice feature was the choice of white or wheat bread with your meal! more

If you wanna stay inside I-410, this is a good option 2/23/2008

The best BBQ in S.A. is gonna be in the 'burbs (I have yet to try augie's barbed wire). but if you don't wanna make that trek, Barbecue Station if pretty good. Especially the brisket, by which we all know a BBQ joint must be judged. Potato salad was, as mentioned in another post, like mashed potatos. Other sides were OK. The chicken was cooked to perfection! BUT the seasoning was heavy on the salt, which is this places downfall. Based on the brisket alone, we're talking 4 or 5 stars (did i mention this sauce was awesome!?) But everything else was salty! the green beans, the chicken and the ribs...i know its a mixed review, but i would definitely say go give it a try - and get some brisket! Pros: Brisket, Service Cons: Over-seasoning more

Best BBQ in S.A. 7/7/2007

When you walk into a smoke house, and you can actually smell the smoke. That's when you know that you're in a good place. This is not a fast food BBQ chain like Bill Millers. This is the absolutely BEST brisket is San Antonio. Charred to perfection and cooked to where the meat crumbles away. A different tasting potato salad that is unique. The place is better than Granzin's in New Braunfels which used to be good until they opened their new store, and chaos set in. Barbecue Station is the best place you'll find outside of Lockhart. Sausage links have a nice slightly spicy taste to them as well. Better grab a pound and a half of brisket and four sausage links to go. Just to be on the safe side... Pros: Great BBQ Cons: Can get a little busy at times more

Average BBQ So Far 6/9/2006

Texas is known for Great BBQ and Chilli, and I am searching for that great BBQ place.\r Well, this is not great, but average at best. The pork ribs are fatty (like most of the places I have been to in San Antonio so far), and the Brisket was also.\r \r I was really disappointed, since this was recommended by my hotel, and the reviews I saw here made me think it was really good.\r \r I did not dine in, I was ordering for pick-up, and their service was prompt (if not a bit expensive).\r \r So, not sure what all the raves are about. My quest continues.\r \r Pros: prompt phone service Cons: fatty ribs & brisket more

You can find better! 5/11/2006

Try Rudy's, Bill Millers or Gradys for better BBQ and sauce! The potato salad is like BLAND chunky mashed potato's! The corn is so-so! I was over charged for my meal and it didn't sink in until after I left. I called management and they didn't seem to care. Tring to get off and on the freeway for this eatery is fair enough; so it's in a good location. I like the way the place is decorated, but they could clean it up a little. Want good BBQ; pass this place up! Pros: Location Cons: Food more

Texas BBQ 1/21/2005

This place makes some of the best brisket I have ever had! Thier ribs are to die for. Good family atmosphere. Talk to the owner and he will ship Just about anywhere to prove it. Pros: ambience, excellent BBQ, reasonable prices more

Excellent Service and Food 11/28/2004

I had them cook my Turkey for me this year because I just didnt have the time. Needless to say it turned out 100 times better than if I had cooked it. I really appreciate the Friendly service and excellent attitude of the employees. Thanks Again, Stefani Early Pros: Affordable, Quick, Friendly more

BBQ without the hype 7/24/2004

This is my favorite bbq in S.A. so far. They don't hype it up like a lot of the other restaurants, but they do provide good food at a reasonable price. I definitely recommend ribs and sausage. more

Perhaps _the_ best in San Antonio 1/12/2003

Rudy's has turned into a chain and lost a lot of its quality on the way. Casey's is headed that direction. Barbecue Station remains the same and I couldn't be happier. For me, it all comes down to the brisket and this place serves the tastiest in town. I eat their regularly but I've never gotten an ugly slice. Can't beat their sauce, either! The ambience is spartan, but who cares? Pros: Inexpensive, Excellent Quality, Easy to get to Cons: Crowded at lunchtime more
