Editorial review from Citysearch 7/11/2013

The food was so so. It was kind of bland and the staff was kind of rude. When I asked a question, they didn't answer me and just asked if I wanted anything else. They only reason I didn't leave was because I was with a group of people. more

Best Chicken Chow Mein in Austin!! 11/22/2010

This lovely little chinese restaurant may not have a huge fancy bar or super elegant furnishings-but what is does have is the chinese food you crave late at night that just hits the spot. It is the familiar and it is freshly prepared and the portions are huge. Prices for lunch are outrageous-$5.75 will get you choice of soup (my favorite is the egg drop-to die for-seriously-)your entree, egg roll, wontons and rice-you can't eat at a fast food restaurant for that price unless you go on the dollar menu. Mrs. Wu is lovely and it is about 5 minutes from St. Edward's University-so it's pretty near to downtown. Remember-if trendy is what you are looking for-you won't find it here, but if you want consistently good chinese food in a friendly, clean atmosphere-you will not be disappointed with the Bamboo Garden! more

Down home Texas, frendly, With GREAT food! 11/1/2010

Mrs Wu & Is such a sweet lady, and all of the staff are so great at Bamboo Garden.\r They serve one dish after another all hot and freshly prepared, its obvious that it has not been setting on a steam table wating for a customer. \r A well laid out menu .We all just want to return to try everything on the menu,\r I think 33 years of doing something right is why Bamboo Garden is Soooo Good !! more

they have food 6/30/2009

I went to Bamboo Garden to order carry out. I ordered fried rice and an egg roll. I requested extra soy and sweet and sour sauce. When I opened the bag there was no egg roll, only 2 packets of soy sauce and one packet of sweet and sour sauce. I do not think I was charged for the missing items, but they did not seem to have listened to my order. The fried rice was a very large portion, not too greasy, good amount of individual ingredients, but was kinda tasteless. There just was not any flavor that made it stand out above average. The service was fast (there were only four to six people in the place) and not unpleasant. I would give them one more shot, but I always order fried rice first to test a new place, and they did not really impress with the simplest of basic asian staples. Pros: fast service Cons: don't listen well more

If you like food made by exploited workers then this is the place for you... 3/4/2009

Bamboo Garden is a terrible place to eat. They exploit their workers. They only pay their HispanicI kitchen workers $5/hr (well below minimum wage) and they don't pay over time or give them breaks. Furthermore, they completely mistreat them by constantly yelling at them. I would encourage anyone who cares about labor rights to stay away from this place. more

We LOVE this place 2/16/2009

We've been going to Bamboo Garden for years. I haven't found a place for Chinese that I like any better. The menu is huge so they'll have whatever you want . If you don't see it, I'm sure they'd make it. We don't go all that often, but the staff knows us and the service is always, always good. It's not the most elegant of atmospheres, but there is a lot of friendliess to it and we'll always go back. more

Great place to go on a budget 10/1/2008

I've only been to this restaurant one time which was today. The reason I gave this restaurant 3 stars is because it is average. The food is average but it is good especially if your hungry because the portions are big. I ordered General Tso chicken which wasn't on the lunch menu but they happily made it for me. The service is excellent. The staff was very friendly and very attentative. The parking wasn't all that great but the lot is big so actually finding a spot isn't a issue. The restaurant is a great place to try and the staff actually get 5 stars from me. Pros: Big portions and big selection, happy to accomadate special order Cons: parking more

Great South Austin Delivered Chinese 4/20/2008

This place is awesome for South Austin Delivery! Always good food, fresh and tasty. Our fav when we want to stay home and eat in. Pros: Great prices and food more

Friendly place, great food. 3/9/2007

I love Chinese food! This is my favorite low-key, last minute dinner decision kind of place. The service is extremely friendly. The owner, Mama Wu, always makes her way around the restaurant to make sure your dining experience is perfect. The cooks are always willing to make adjustments however you like. I suggest sesame chicken with jalapenos, orange peel beef, crab rangoon(made with real crab, btw), and hot and sour soup. We always ask for all white meat chicken and they are happy to oblige. My boyfriend is a very picky eater and they even make a special plate just for him. more

Average 9/29/2006

I don't get what all the hype was about. We ordered delivery and it was ok. It was your average, mediocre Chinese food. We're still on the lookout for some fantastic Chinese in Austin. more

Love this place! 5/2/2005

My boyfriend and I were looking for a good Chinese place close to where we live, found Bamboo Garden, and go there all the time now. The food is great, the people are super friendly, and everything is very affordable. Especially if you happen to go during lunch. It is a little hard to find, though. I think we passed it up the firt couple of times we looked for it. more

awsome food 6/24/2004

I have been a costumer for 21 years and it still amazes me how good the food is. The won-ton in hot sauce is my favorite appetizer. The chow-mein is made in a very light sauce and their barbeque pork fried rice is the best I ever had. more

A good find. 7/7/2003

We moved to Austin last year and have been looking for a good chinese restaurant to call ""home"". I think we have finally found it at Bamboo Garden. After reading the reviews here at Citysearch, we visited the restaurant a couple of weeks ago and have been back several times since then, ordering different appetizers and entrees each time to test the limits of the kitchen. The food has been consistently good - even better than expected, and the service is friendly and warm. If you haven't given Bamboo garden a try, you should! Pros: Varied dishes, Family Atmosphere, Friendly staff more

SCRUMDIDILYUMPTIOUS 7/24/2002

The Bamboo Garden has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. Even before they switched locations. Christine always remembers everyone of my family members and welcomes us in. If one of us is missing, she notices and asks where they are. Their food is to die for! And the service is wonderful. They even have neat little China ornaments, and bammboo for sale. It has a unique Chineese atmosphere, with a supreme wait staff. The food/tea is always piping hot. NOT ONCE have they screwed an order up. If you haven't been there yet, and you like Chineese food, it's a must. (Try the Almond OR Sweet & Sour Chicken) ~DUCE DUCE~ Pros: never too crowded, nice clean place, family atmosphere Cons: definitly location, sometimes parking, ??????????????? more

Meal Deal 7/1/2002

Bamboo Garden is nestled away at the corner of south 1st and Hwy 290. (behind 7-11 is a good landmark) Family owned and in business 26 years, that should say something! Intimate, personable, great service and great prices for lunches and dinners. So much food-filling and tasty. No frills, but if you are hungry-go there! Pros: price Cons: location more
