Shrimp Curry Warning 9/1/2007

I ordered the shrimp curry on a lovely spring Thursday night, and I woke up at 2 a.m. with hives all over my arms. Doctor said I most likely had an allergic reaction to SPOILED SHRIMP. (doogle it: spoiled shrimp release a histamine that causes allergic reactions, including hives). It's not a mistake easily made back there in the kitchen -- spoiled shrimp STINK. But they drowned in in curry sauce and masked the crime. I should've trusted my gut -- its was telling me to send it back. more

Delicious Gourmet Indian 12/29/2006

This particular location is probably among the best of the popular gourmet Indian chain Baluchi's, which tends to surprise people the fact that its not an Italian establishment. The food is superb from the biriyani dishes to the vegetarian choices and the portions are extremely decent. Service has been variable at best, with terribly rude phone manners to fantastic in-house service. Being that its gourmet however, some might have problems justifying the prices (e.g. $3.95 gets you 1 veggie samosa), however, the food is extremely well prepared. I am even impressed with their delivery, which has always arrived in a very short amount of time. Pros: Food, Delivery, Decor Cons: Service (at times), Expensive more

Horrible Food!! 9/29/2006

I have eaten before at Baluchis and find the food to be very tasty. But this location at Spring was beyond bad. My friends were in town from Japan and wanted to try Indian food. So we decided to go to Baluchis after having to wait long hours at other restaurants, it was our last resort. We got there and it took the waiter a while to attend to us. We had the vegetable kebabs, it tasted more like raw vegetables and yogurt. Chicken korma was horrendous, which I sent back because I had chicken korma many times being indian. I really can't say anything good about our meal. I felt very disappointed because even my guests complained and knew how bad the food was because the've had much better in Japan. I don't know if it was the chef, but I don't think I would dine at this location again. Cons: Bad food more

The Best Baluchi's 1/13/2005

The Best of the Chain 11/26/2004

Having been to the other locations, this is my favorite. They must have a better chef but each time I return to the So-Ho location, I'm never let down. The wait staff is much friendlier then say their sister on 2nd Avenue or Uptown where the food will burn your mouth. Begin with the samosa, flakey and spiced perfectly. The chicken tikka masala is creamy, full of tomato and saffron and tender. The naan is flakey and not at all greasy. The price is virtually a steal given its So-Ho location. My only negative comment: what's with the tin cups for water? Leaves a metalic taste in your mouth. Please, regular glasses. So, avoid the other Baluchi's and come Downtown. You'll like it much better. Pros: Friendly staff, Inexpensive, Good food more

Delicious Gourmet Indian Food 2/9/2004

Baluchis is THE best Indian food joint in Manhattan/NYC, and there is little doubt about it. I have tried most of the fancy indian restaurants and the cheap eateries, and the Baluchis chain does the tradition of an affordable gourmet Indian restaurant much justice. The place provides a perfect dinner ambience and comes replete with ornate tables, wall designs, and rural style indian copper glasses. My favorites include the succulent chicken makhani, Rogan Josh (lamb), Baluchis Shrimp Curry and the Paneer bhurji. A good time to visit is during weekend brunch (50% off!!). If you like this one, you'll love the other similarly modeled Baluchis too. Pros: Indian, Gourmet, Affordable more
