Wonderful experience and great atmosphere! 3/24/2012

We were a party of six. We had a reservation at 8PM and got there a couple of minutes early. We were seated immediately at a table waiting for us. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable and gave us the list of specials. We ordered appetizers and I had the scallops and my wife had the fried callimari. Both were fresh and favorable! Some of the best scallops I have tasted. The dinner. I had veal marsalla and wife shared the Branzino and salmon with her friend. They both said it was excellent. My veal was tender and tasted just right. Our friends also said their meals were excellent and were glad we chose Basso56 as our restaurant. It was our anniversary celebration and they brought out some chocolate cake with a candle and we loved it, After coffee we had stayed a bit longer to talk and never got the feeling we were being rushed. The meal was very reasonable for NYC standards and I would gladly recommend you come here if you are thinking of visiting the area. You are going to enjoy it. more

Not great 3/19/2011

Yes, Basso 56 is an okay restaurant, but not always consistent. The fish is okay, aside from the occasional worm. I found a live red worm in my cod the final time I ate there. I was startled and let out a slight scream, but the manager was not accommodating-- they were irritated!! I walked out, but they charged us for everything before we left. Including the fish with the worm in it! It is by far the worst managed restaurant I have ever patronized in Manhattan. I live in the neighborhood and had been a regular at the restaurant, yet they still didn't have the courtesy to at least apologize and not charge me for the untouched meal. We were disgusted. more

Always a Safe Bet; Always Good 10/31/2010

This is a the restaurant that is always the safe bet: No matter who the company is or what their tastes are, Basso56 will always please... Reasons not only include exceptional food prepared and supervised by a seasoned, authentic-Italian, in-kitchen chef, but also boasts a wine list and desert menu that is perfectly merchandised and dish-paired-too. The staff are accommodating and, carefully doting ensuring client satisfaction. Each member of the wait staff are gifted with character and appropriate humor. Impress your family; impress your friends. This is the NYC cuisine equivalent of a place of safe harbor. more

Midtown retreat 7/19/2010

If you, like I, are put off going to this place due to the ""okay at best"" review left by NYC Designer Girl, please take the time to read this review for a much less ego-driven perspective. Anybody that finds it reasonable to go by that moniker doesn't garner much stock from me when it comes to reviewing restaurants. Rant over... Pros: Great selection, excellent service Cons: Specials were uninspired, one toilet cubicle per sex! more

Food, ambiance, service was AMAZING 3/5/2010

The service was amazing, our waiter's name was Silvio and he was very attentive as was all the waiters. He told us the specials and was very nice and patient. The food was so delicious. We had the best crabcake for appettizers. I would recommend this dish to everyone. I then had the shrimp pasta and it was so fresh. The dessert was amazing as well. I have no complaints. Our table was cleared for each meals we ordered and received new silverwares. I will definetly go back!! Pros: Service, food and Ambiance Cons: Nothing more

okay at best 1/27/2010

Basso is great for a quick casual meal. The atmosphere is not romantic, as it's just plain decor. The crabcakes are great. So are the lambchops, but the fish is not always fresh, and occasionally, there is a fishy smell to it. I also feel it's overpriced for what it is. But I dine out every evening, and I sometimes prefer a more casual atmosphere, which this is. Recently a patron found a worm in his fish, which really horrified me, as I was at the next table. Pros: Good crabcakes Cons: Not good for seafood more

The Best Service and food 5/21/2009

I have been to this restaurant twice and every time I have been there, the service is bar none ""THE BEST"". They make you feel as though you are part of the family to which they wait on you hand and foot. Exemplary Service. The food and presentation is wonderful as I have tried different dishes and they always have made me yearn for more. Wonderful location, with a quaint feeling to it, even if others may feel it is too small. On a scale of 1 to 10 scale I would give Basso 56 a 100!!!!! Pros: Attention to detail, SERVICE, presentation, taste and flavor Cons: There are none!!! more

AMAZING 3/1/2009

my family and friend had a great dinner experience at BASSO the staff was friendly and accomodating. more

absolutely delicious! 2/21/2009

Absolutely delicious! The interior of the restaurant is the romantic and you feel you have escaped city life and are in another place. I had the 3 course meal. I cannot describe how delicious each plate was, especially the grilled salmon, I didn't want it to end! The staff was all very attentive and professional. Definitely recommended for any occasion. more

Amazing Restaurantt... 11/20/2008

We went to this restaurant with another couple and it's definitely an experience. Food's great, of course, but the service is off the hook. The wait staff are incredibly attentive! We ordered several items from the menu, and the one thing that struck me was the lack of veggies. That's my only criticism. The end of the meal, we all needed a walk. Overall, amazing. Pros: service, ambiance, food more

Uneventful Meal 11/9/2008

I had a relatively uneventful meal here. Not in a bad way, but the service was good, the meal was great, the ambiance was ok. I did have an excellent meal here. We had the calamari to start and then shared a couple of entrees. The salmone and the scottadto alla romana were tender and delicious. It is a bit on the pricey side .The wine list is pretty solid though. more

Exactly what we were looking for 8/27/2008

One of my Russian friends and I had a party around the corner from Basso 56 and searched for a restaurant to share a nice dinner with friends. I did citysearch and found Basso 56. Reviews were good so we decided to try it. What can I say? It was fantastic and far above my expectations. All the staff (from the beautiful pleasant hostess to bartender, manager, waiters, bus people) were friendly, helpful without being pushy. Service was outstanding. We didnt have to wait for drinks or food, timing was impecable. Ok, now to food. EVERYTHING we had was tasty (and I travel a lot in Italy and definitely appreciate good food). For appetizers we had freshly grilled calamari salad and caprese. Both were equally delicious and we savored every bite. Next came the main course: we shared crepes stuffed with seafood - unbelievable, and the night's special - lamb shank... meat was so tender and cooked to perfection. Unfortunately we didnt have any room left for desert, but I already told my friends this morning about it and we definitely coming back!!! Menu has such a great selection, I will have to become a regular to taste it all! :) Prices are very reasonable and not outrages, like many restaurants in New York. I highly recommend it for intimate as well as friends/family dinner. The place has it all. Pros: Food, Service, Prices, Staff Cons: Are you kidding? the place was perfect! more

PERFECT! One of the best Italian restaurants in NYC 8/18/2008

I've been here twice with my girlfriend and plan on going back many more times. The first time was with her mother, and the second time was with my brother, and each time has been nothing short of fantastic. Pros: Amazing food, great service, quiet and romantic atmosphere Cons: Rather small space that can't accommedate large groups more

***AMAZING as Always*** Grazie! 3/12/2008

I have been going to Basso56 for the past few years (back when it was in the LES 'Bassoest'). My last two birthday dinner parties here (latest this past Sat.) have been wonderful. Thank you Alex for Everything! The service is extremely accomodating, friendly, and professional. The atmosphere... elegant, but light. Pros: Food, Wine, Service, Ambiance, and Alex! more

YUM! 3/6/2008

This is a great place. The host is nice and accomodating. The pasta is fresh and delicious and the whole branzino is amazing. The dinning room is small but it seems to get very packed on most nights. I would recommend this place if you are in the midtownish area and want a nice italian dinner. Pros: food more

Not very good 9/15/2007

After studying the reviews, my husband and I decided to try this Italian restaurant near Times Square. The hostess was very pleasant as she sat us at a quiet corner table. Our disappointment came when our food began to arrive. Service was very quick. We were finished our meal in 1 hour and 15 min. Our reservations were at 8 PM so we were not in a hurry to see a show. I think the staff just wanted to turn the tables. The food was not appetizing. The involtini was tough, the linguini was over done and the crabcake had more filler than crabmeat. Dinner for 2 with 2 cocktails and a bottle of wine was $150 -not bad for NY- but not worth it either. A nice touch was the complimentary lemoncello at the end of the meal. With so many great Italian restaurants in Manhattan, don't go here. Try someplace else. Pros: proximity to the theatres Cons: food more

Best Overall Italian Experience in City 5/14/2007

The restaurant has a very inviting ""neighborhood restaurant"" feel--very friendly, outstanding service and it feels like most of the people are regulars (including us). Aleks, who manages the front, is outgoing and makes sure the service is incredibly responsive but not ""hovering"". And, it also has outstanding food (Paulo is creative and talented)--the pastas are fresh and inspired; the veal chop is thick and tender; and the fish is light and perfectly cooked. The burrata (mozzarella and cream) appetizer (a special) is my favorite appetizer in the city. We took a group of about 20 there recently, they had a great time and at least half of them have made a point to tell me that they have gone back already. I know there are a lot of good Italian restaurants in the city, but you combine the great food and great feel to the place, and I honestly think it is the best overall Italian experience in the city. Pros: friendly, responsive service combined with outstanding food more

Outstanding Decor and Atmosphere; Excellent Food 1/10/2007

I have been a fan of Paolo Catini and Basso Est on the lower east side for some time now and so I was very excited to hear that he would be opening a new restaurant uptown very close to where I live. I have been there three times now and each time is better than the last. I Love the Room! It is such an imaginative and creative solution to the traditional New York long narrow ground floor space. The finishes are clean, textural and light, and the space feels spacious and yet accessible and familiar. I particularly like the raw soft wood columns and wine display. Where can I get some of that for my apartment? more

Exellent place for lunch and dinner 11/25/2006

I have tryed Basso56 twice already. Beeing close to work I stoped by for lunch one day and I was truly amazed: for $16 pris fix you get a two course of a generous meal plus coffee and soda. I think the best deal in the area! ( try especially the fish of the day or the ravioli of the day, and you will be surprised). Than I decided to try the place again for dinner now, and it was a real wonderful experience. The place is very clean and cozy. The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable; they tell a long list of specials at the table besides the menu. Also great recommendations on the wine list which has a nice extensive selection of all-italian by the glass or on the $28-32 price range bottles. We tryed the artichoke salad and the sliced portobello for the appetizer and they were delicious. Also the papardelle with lamb ragu' sauce and the red snaper special with crab meat crust were amazing. The Tiramisu'(served in the gass) was the best I ever had. They make exellent cappuccinos as well. Pros: Cozy, Clean, Spacious, Exellent food more

Great food & atmosphere 9/30/2006

If you are looking for good Italian food this is a sure bet. Basso 56 distinguishes itself, however, from the myrid of Italian restaurants in town (not to mention the tourist trap, Patsy's 100 ft away) by creating a friendly and unpretentious environment. The restaurant is undergroud but the light colored walls and open kitchen allows for an open feel. The menu offers more than traditional fair with options such as duck in a balsamic reduction with figs. Only drawback is the concrete interior does not help mute any of the noise in the relatively small space. That being said, the food and the friendly staff outshine the rest. Pros: great food and friendly staff Cons: can be noisy more

  • The Scene
This midtown spin-off of the East Village's popular Basso Est streamlines its look for crowds of theatergoers and business diners. Clean lines in the long rectangular space lead all the way to the open kitchen in the back, a touch that mirrors the staff's straight-shooting warmth. A gleaming white color scheme keeps the sub-street level room from feeling dim, while a large wood wine rack and beige wall accents provide terrestrial accents.

    The Food
The move uptown hasn't diminished chef-owner's Paolo Catini's casually elegant central Italian cuisine. The menu at this location greatly expands seafood options: Homey touches of mushroom and orange bolster perfectly seared scallops, and moist whole branzino packs plenty of fresh oregano and lemon flavor. And though lamb ragu lacks complexity, a smoky, baked buffalo mozzarella appetizer, juicy veal chop topped with crispy sage leaves and fluffy panna cotta prove Catini's no slouch with land-lubbing fare either.
