Questionable choice 10/20/2008

If you have long, thick and curly hair, you should think twice before going to Aveda. I didn`t. I got partial highlights for the first time and I was charged for full highlights. That`s one thing. Don`t think that if you go during the week you will pay less for a haircut. They charged me same thing. They used a lot of solution for my hair, but what was the point when they cut half of my hair. I specifically said I want not more than 3-5 inches & I even had a photo of the hair style I wanted. I miss my hair! more

Awesome Awesome Awesome 6/27/2007

The Aveda Institute Chicago is an awesome place to go! It's professional, cheap, relaxing, and everyone is really nice. I had my first experience at the Aveda Institute Chicago a few months ago. I had a shampoo, cut, scalp/arm/hand massage, all over color, highlights, blow dry, and style for less than $100.00! It was an absolutely amazing experience. I went back for a body treatment last week and fell in love with the spa. It was so relaxing and the service was amazing! Check this place out! It rocks! more

No Thanks 5/28/2006

I'm not a big fan of this place. I have only been here once and had a bad experience and probably will never go back again. I specifically asked my stylist, more than a few times, to not cut my bangs short. But still, she cut them super short and then tried to justify it by telling me it looked nice. And she also changed my parting spot, which I was not too happy about. The actual salon was nice and my wait wasn't terribly wrong. But I like to have my stylist do what I ask. more

Cheap Haircuts Decent Products 5/27/2006

I like Aveda--they give you cheap, stylish haircuts and use the quality Aveda products on you. Hair Cuttery has nothing over Aveda. Keep in mind that the staff are largely students and act like such--so you may get a slightly nervous stylist. Rest assured, teachers are around and will check up on the students (and you) to make sure everything is okay. The shampoos/conditioners are pricy but worth it; I have rarely been able to find products that worked as well in my hair (which is fine and wavy). Aveda also has a make-up line, however, I have not tried it. more

Upscale Salon Feel!! 5/7/2006

I just went here for the first time a couple of days ago. I was amazed at the pricing here. You get salon style service with all the salon attention and salon products for such a cheap price! Its students who do the work, but you will barely realize it because they are so well trained and professional. The girl that cut my hair was really friendly too and she gave a ton of really good suggestions. The feel of this place was like an upscale salon and the pricing was not like that of an upscale salon. It didn't even take them that long to give me my haircut. I was in and out in 40 min and that included a hair wash and blow dry! more

snobbery abounds 5/7/2006

I wanted to get my hair cut here because, my regular hair salon is on the 2nd floor of a building with no elevators, and I was walking with a baby stroller. I'm always walking with a baby stroller. And a baby. So anyway, I stroll into Aveda, smile, and ask if I can make an appointment for later on that week. wait.. I did smile at a stylist, make eye contact.. but then I waited like 5 minutes before she approached me and allowed me to talk. Wasn't like she was busy either, just wanted me to wait. Anyway, she didn't have any openings and wouldn't look passed the current week's schedule. I felt as if she just didn't want to do my hair. I don't know, maybe it was the baby stroller, or the sweat dripping from my brow that turned her off. I won't be going back, and it's a shame because they do have great prices. more

Celebrate Yourself Inexpensively 3/7/2006

The services here range from hair cuts and colors to facials to massages. The hair cut, for example, includes consultation, shampoo, cut and style, for only $13! The students are friendly and want to make sure you happy with your service. Keep in mind that this is a school, so there will be hovering teachers and a few nervous/uncertain students. I've had a few "first-time" hair cuts by students, but none turned out bad. I also enjoy the waxing services; for as much as they can be, they are relatively peaceful and almost relaxing. Almost. The products are pretty good, but expensive and the students will try to lure you into buying every product they used on you. This is isn't such a bad thing, just annoying, especially when you only have 13 bucks for a hair cut! Favorite shampoo: Pure Abundance. Great for volumizing my fine hair. more

Affordable Salon Services 3/2/2006

This is a good place to go if you want salon service, but you don't want to have to play salon prices for it. The students at this school preform salon services here for a fraction of the cost. And they do a wonderful job here. Their work is really professional ane though they are students, they are in their last teir, so they are pretty much already professionals. Plus, everything they do is watched over by a supervisor, which makes it almost doubly good. Try this place out for some affordable salon service. more

Great deal! 9/27/2005

First of all, the location is wonderful; situated between Lincoln Park and Lakeview in the Century Mall. Second, how can you beat such a great deal on hair and spa services? I know that at first it seems kind of strange to go to a "student" hair stylist, but they are very knowledgeable and closely supervised. Check it out. more

Aveda Institute Chicago 9/14/2005

For the price, it's an amazing deal. Don't hesitate because you're giving your head to students, students or not, they're definitely better than your local neighborhood salon. The whole process takes about an hour, but 13-15$ for shampoo/condition, haircut, plus style is totally worth the hour. Give it a try! Great to learn new techniques on how to style your hair! more

Haricuts from Students 9/8/2005

I have gone here a couple of times to get my haircut and was pleasantly surprised at how well the students were able to cut my hair. The times I have gone, I have only gone in for a trim. The students did a great job, but my only complaint was that it took a long time. My normal salon can trim my hair in about 20 minutes, but at the school the students take about an hour. After the student is finished a teacher comes over and checks out their work. For a haircut of $15 it is totally worth it! more

Affordable, salon quality services 8/27/2005

I've found it difficult to find a reasonable hair salon in the city, with cuts at least $50 and highlights much more. This salon is actually for the students of Aveda beauty school to get experience. All of thier work is supervised by an instructor. They also offer spa services. A haircut is about $13. Be prepared to spend more time in the chair, since the stylist new and a bit slower. Also you will be more successful if you know what you want, rather than relying on the stylist to decide. Also, the hours of the salon are much better than many other beauty schools that offer services. more

curly hair dresser 8/3/2005

The Aveda Institute can do an amazing job on anyone's hair no matter curly or straight, they are just downright amazing. Although I have straight hair a friend of mine who has curly hair went to get her hair cut at the same time I went to get my hair cut. We sat next to each other through out the whole process shampooing and cut and they did a great job on both of our haircuts, they knew exactly what they were doing. The Aveda staff, whether students or professional stylists are very experienced and and know their hair so I would recommend them to anyone. They also do a great job on up-do's. more

Great bargain 7/29/2005

This place is really great for students on a budget. Haircuts will run you from $13-$15. Although the stylists are students, they are very talented and their inexperience does not show. They are very young and they are well suited to young customers or anyone that would like to freshen up their look. One particular highlight is that they obviously use all-natural Aveda products which I find very soothing. They are expensive so this is a very nice treat at a very low price. If you get a friendly stylist, which most of them are, ask for a sample and they will be happy to give it to you. I highly recommend this salon. They also offer spa services which I have yet to try. more

Aveda Institute does great body wraps 7/12/2005

The Institute is a learning environment so you can't be guaranteed a certain person for your services and it also takes a bit more time for your services. I've had body wraps there and for the price they cannot be beat. $45-$50 for a body wrap is unheard of in a day spa. So, if you are looking for some pampering without the price try them out. more
