Best

My husband and I recently got married and held our reception at Aquariva (see additional review). The Avalon is literally 10 feet away so it was the obvious choice for our weddin...

Worst

First of all... they are going in and deleting bad reviews, so who knows how long this will be up. I bought a gift card for $405, the spa changed management, and now they will ...

Nice place to stay 6/29/2011

I stayed here on a weekend trip and really enjoyed my time! The view of the river is beautiful and the walking path was so nice! (also the view from the restaurant there is amazing! good food too) The valet parking was fine and the guys there were very nice but the fact that overnight parking was $20 is pretty ridiculous. It is like they are saying "welcome...now give us all your money" i don't mind spending money when it matters, but the parking is not covered and there is no reason for the high price!!!!!! It ended up raining so i found my way to the spa and it was amazing! The staff was so nice and helpful! The amenities in the locker room were VERY nice and the atmosphere was peaceful and what i needed. My massage was exactly what I needed and Darci was extremely skilled and gave a wonderful massage. I highly suggest visiting this spa and Darci. Overall I enjoyed my stay and my time in Portland! more

Great for Wedding 9/22/2010

My husband and I recently got married and held our reception at Aquariva (see additional review). The Avalon is literally 10 feet away so it was the obvious choice for our wedding night and the night before. We loved everything! The first night I stayed in a junior suite with my sister-in-law. The room was huge with a deck and fireplace and since we booked in advance for 2 nights we got 20% off making it only $167. On our wedding night my husband and I stayed in the Riverside Suite. Amazing! It's basically an apartment with a efficiency kitchen, separate bathroom and bedroom. The separate bathroom came in handy since we invited our families to our room the next day for brunch. I had 2 hairstylists back out on me so I reached out to the event planner at the Avalon (Leslie who is fantastic) just to see if they had a hair stylist in the salon. Lucky me, they had just added Joanne to the team. Joanne was amazing!! The night of our rehearsal dinner she did a hair consultation and test run. We discussed what I wanted on the wedding day but she switched it up and gave me an updo for that night so it would be a surprise for everyone. She also did my makeup at no charge and it looked great! Once Joanne was finished me she asked my mom if she could play with her hair. She ended up giving my mom a complete makeover at no charge! She looked amazing! The day of my wedding, Joanne took her time making sure my hair was done right and even came up to my room once I was dressed to help me place my veil. I will definitely have Joanne do my hair for events in the future. The trial run was $65 and the actual day of was $65, well worth it to not run around the city. The Avalon is off the beaten path but well worth it. I highly recommend riverside rooms. more

horrible 3/29/2010

First of all... they are going in and deleting bad reviews, so who knows how long this will be up. I bought a gift card for $405, the spa changed management, and now they will no longer honor it. The GM has a "not my problem" attitude, and I'll be making sure to tell everyone I come across never to use their services. Pros: none Cons: see below more

TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3/28/2010

If I could rate this 0 starts, I would. My husband bought me a $400 gift card to the spa. The spa changed ownership/management in December, and now they will not honor the gift card, and we are $400 out! Basically the GM's attitude is, "Not My Problem". Unbelievable way to run a business. Pros: none Cons: worst business ethic ever more

Avalon Sucks 1/11/2010

Avalon Hotel's Spa Chakra of Portland went in to bankruptcy only for the Portland location. We received gift certificates for Christmas and when we wanted to book our spa appointment we were told of the bankruptcy, they would not be honored and that we had two choices: travel to San Fransisco, Los Angeles or New York to redeem them, or sell them on Craigslist at a reduced price to someone living in the above locations. We are hoping that the credit card company will reverse the charges so that the giver of the certificates can get her money back. Shame on you, Avalon, for not just "saying yes" and compensating us. Cons: Dropped the ball on spa certificates more

awesome spa, ok hotel 11/6/2009

The spa was amazing. They were offering awesome deals and were able to get us appoinments first thing the next morning. Everyone in the spa was so helpful! I got a facial and massage, both great. The hotel was ok. Very nicely decorated, but rooms were not as nice. TV was 10+ years old and the remote hardly worked. When we called to get the TV fixed after the screen kept going blank, we were told it was not an option because it was a ComCast issue, when we asked to be moved rooms we were told there were no rooms avaliable for our room type. We asked for an upgrade and were denied. TV was eventually fixed though. Parking was expensive at 19/night for over night parking. Valet staff were very friendly. Would probably not return to hotel next time I was in Portland, but would definitely return to the SPA... Pros: spa Cons: rooms more

Best Spa in Portland 8/7/2008

New to portland and found this hidden jem. The gal who gave me my facial said she had been there for 3 years, wish I remembered her name, but she was an absolute doll. Her facial massage practically put me to sleep. I will definitely be back. Pros: Spa has valet parking from the hotel Cons: None more

Ooh La Spa! And they have Guerlain..... 8/2/2008

Loved the Spa, down to the last detail! The ladies there made me feel like I was a queen, doing everything in their power to fulfill my every wish. EVERYTHING was included in the price of my treatments. I was surprised they have Guerlain skincare, which is so luxurious, it is hard to find anywhere. I have loved the Super Aqua Serum for the body and was able to have some shipped to my home for no additional charge! I started out in the gym, went to the spa and relaxed in the jacuzzi, steam-room, and sauna. I had a body polish, (AMAZING) it was on a wet table with multiple shower heads running over me the whole time... aaah and then the massage and facial. Dana Ray and Natalie gave me the best treatments, I would have to say, I've ever had. Both were so knowledgeable and sweet. The facial came with facial waxing and brow and lash tinting (I'd never had tinting before but now I am addicted: I no longer have to wear mascara)....... I could go on and on, but I just have to say the chop chop thing on my feet was soooooo incredible! Thanks ladies, I feel incredible! Portland is definitely in my top 5! Ciao! Pros: All inclusive spa Cons: I don't live there :( more

Awful customer service and no self-parking 7/28/2008

My husband and I frequently stay in the Portland area but this was our first time at this hotel. The first thing that I found very strange and inconvenient is that we were required to use the valet service in order to park our car. There was a very large parking lot just steps from the hotel front door, but they were requiring that I pay them $18 to have someone park my car for me. Ridiculous! The valet person told me that they do not own the lot across the street and that they had limited valet spots. He even divulged that they didn't have enough for the entire hotel! I soon realized it must be quite hectic there if the restaurant is full and there is an event at the hotel or people at the spa. It was very unorganized and a ridiculous way to nickel and dime us. Also, our room wasn't ready when we arrived. We had to be at an event in a hour and the woman at the front desk told us to come back so she could call housekeeping. I asked if she could call while we waited and she finally did after much hesitation. Finally, I had to ASK whether or not they had other accommodations where we could shower and get ready before she offered us a shower at the spa. The last straw came when I ran into a person from housekeeping in the hallway the next morning. I said good morning and her response was a scowl and an inaudible mumbling. I guess the staff is as happy about the place as I am! I will never give this hotel my business ever again. Pros: room was clean and neat Cons: horrible service and no parking! more

Everything you've every wanted... 2/4/2008

I came into the spa with a girlfriend of mine and was blown away by the fact that I didn't even know this place was here. I recieved the best facial I have ever had from Aracili who really took the time to give my older skin what it needed and well as give me easy recomendations of what I could do at home. My massage was more relaxing than I could imagine and even when my services were done, they let me relax in the ladies lounge area for as long as I wanted. Amazing experience and everyone made me feel like I owned the place. I will definitely be back. Pros: The whole place. The tip is even included in the prices. Cons: Parking was confusing. more

Wonderful 1st Anniversary! 9/17/2007

My husband took me to the Avalon for a relaxing "close-to-home" getaway on our 1st anniversary. We had such a great stay. Upon checking in, we received a complimentary upgrade from a regular room to a junior suite for our special occasion. The room was gorgeous and we had a balcony with a partial view of the river. When we entered the room, there was a chilled bottle of champagne awaiting us and in the morning, a complimentary continental breakfast was available with fresh apples and fruit, pastry, cereal, tea and coffee. During our stay, we enjoyed the jacuzzi and fitness room - both of which were clean and in good repair. I will definitely stay at the Avalon again and recommend it to friends and family. more

Avalon Hotel and Spa. Very poor in every way 7/17/2007

DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!!! I recently stayed at this hotel, and the best I can describe it as is a Motel 6. Upon check-in I was told that the room that I had guaranteed with my credit card was not available, and I would have to be down graded to another room. They offered to comp my room for the night, but this was of little comfort since I had a suite reserved and they put me in a basic room, which they told me had a view of a hill, but in reality it was a view of an office building!!!. To make matters worse I was there for a getaway with my wife, and when I called to order 24 hour room service which they had advertised on their website, I was told that it was too late to order any drinks containing alcohol. I have stayed in hotels all over the world and have never run into this problem before, what type of hotel claims to be luxury and cannot bring wine to your room after 11 P.M.? To make matters worse the people in the room next to me were having a party and no one ever calmed the party down. They said that they had gone up to talk to the people, but they girl that I spoke to said that was all she could do. I came down to the lobby to ask for my money back on the room and I was told no, I asked for the manager to call me and have not heard anything as of yet. (This was more than a week ago!!!) I beg all of you whom are considering staying at this hotel to not do it, their are many nice hotels in this city, whom are glad for your business, and not just to take your money. Oh and as for the river view, I walked around the building and saw that most of the rooms were blocked with trees, so I do not see how these people could see the river anyway. Pros: I did not catch any diseases Cons: Too many to list more

Watch out for extra charges on your bill. 3/27/2007

I stayed here and everything seemed OK during the stay, nothing special but not bad either. Trouble came later when I recieved an unknown charge on my credit card for an extra $200.00. When I called to ask about the charge I was told that it was a cleaning charge for smoking in the room. The problem is I do not smoke and didn't smoke in the room. It didn't smell like smoke to me when I was in it and unfortunately the hotel refused to even discuss the issue or issue a credit. Watch out, they may have maids that smoke in the rooms and then you get dinged on your credit card for it. I am reporting this unethical behavior to Better Business as well in hopes that other consumers do not get ripped off by this company. Pros: location Cons: unknown charges and unethical staff members more

Great Place 2/7/2007

We live in Medford and when we come up to see family and do not feel like staying with them, this is the place. We loved it. Very nice and clean, which is importnat to us. Pros: great place more

Horrible Customer Service 9/25/2006

I scheduled a spa day for a wedding party MONTHS in advance. We all had massages and facials planned for the day after a bachelorette party. The DAY before, they called me to tell me that not only were our services not available, but they would not honor the prices they had quoted and they were now $30 more per person per service. I explained the situation, that it was a special day for several girls etc and they were not moved. I then left three messages for the spa director and she NEVER returned my calls! Since I had a room booked at the hotel, I called the hotel manager to see if there was anything he could do and he simply said "No, but he would be willing to cancel my reservation without the normal cancelation fee". Horrible!! Not only did I cancel all of our reservations, but I will NEVER use this hotel or Spa again! Pros: . Cons: . more

Terrible Customer Service 9/12/2006

I booked both the Avalon hotel and the Avalon spa for a girls weekend to celebrate my mother's 60th birthday. Last Saturday, one week before the event, I was notified by the someone at the spa that they were being sold and the services we had booked were not available. I would have understood, except that that they didn't honor their original prices and didn't offer an alternative package of services. I left a message for the Spa manager to see if there was anything she could do, and she didn't call me back until the next day. When she did call she said there was nothing she could do. I left a message for the hotel manager to see if there was anything he could do, and he has yet to call. I ended up cancelling both the hotel reservation and the spa packages and finding another hotel and another spa. Avalon lost over $1500 in business. If you value a high level of customer service, look elsewhere. more
